A pi-extended tetrathiafulvalene-boradiazaindacene chimera, ex-TTF-BODIPY, has been prepared. The resulting system undergoes sequential one-electron oxidations, allowing access to both the mono-oxidized radical cationic and dicationic states. Additionally, ex-TTF-BODIPY displays electrochromic and electrofluorochromic behaviour in the near-IR portion of the electromagnetic spectrum and functions as a redox switched on-off-on'' emissive system.

Adsorbed Water Structure on Acrylate-Based Biocompatible Polymer Surface

Saptarsi Mondal, Jooyoun Kang, Kwanghee Park, Jong Min Lim, Jeong-Hyon Ha, Kyungwon Kwak, Minhaeng Cho

Summary: The study reveals that water molecules adsorbed on highly biocompatible and poorly biocompatible acrylate-based polymers have different vibrational lifetimes, with PMEA showing stronger H-bonding interaction with water and PPEA exhibiting notably longer OD stretch vibrational lifetime. The results also demonstrate substantial spatial overlap between polymer CO group and water for hydrated PMEA, as well as a significant difference in surface morphology compared to PPEA, highlighting the underlying relationships among polymer-water interaction, surface morphology, and biocompatibility.

Quantifying the barrier for the movement of cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene) over the dication of monopyrrolotetrathiafulvalene

Rikke Kristensen, Mathias S. Neumann, Sissel S. Andersen, Paul C. Stein, Amar H. Flood, Jan O. Jeppesen

Summary: A bistable pseudorotaxane and rotaxane were synthesized to measure the height of an electrostatic barrier produced by double molecular oxidation. The study found that substituents on the MPTTF unit had profound effects on the physical properties of the systems and allowed for the first measurement of the deslipping of the CBPQT ring in the pseudorotaxane.

Non-Symmetric Bispyrrolotetrathiafulvalene Building Blocks

Mathias S. Neumann, Jan O. Jeppesen

Summary: Redox-responsive compounds, including Tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) derivatives, have been widely studied in molecular nanotechnology for their potential applications in constructing redox-active materials. However, the use of BPTTF as a building block is still limited despite its favorable properties. This study reports the synthesis and functionalization of two novel non-symmetric BPTTF building blocks, which can be obtained from specific intermediates in moderate to high yields.

Two-color infrared photothermal microscopy

Chanjong Park, Jong Min Lim, Seok-Cheol Hong, Minhaeng Cho

Summary: Infrared photothermal microscopy is a non-invasive and label-free imaging technique that has been used in various research areas. However, the narrow spectral width of the preferred excitation light source limits the molecular information obtained. Here, we introduce a two-color IR photothermal microscopy technique that overcomes this limitation and allows for the imaging and differentiation of two chemical species in live cells.

Mechanistic studies of isomeric [2]rotaxanes consisting of two different tetrathiafulvalene units reveal that the movement of cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene) can be controlled

Sofie K. Jensen, Mathias S. Neumann, Rikke Frederiksen, Mathias L. Skavenborg, Mads C. Larsen, Stinne E. Wessel, Jan O. Jeppesen

Summary: Controlling the movement of CBPQT(4+) ring is essential for the full potential utilization of artificial molecular machines. In this study, two isomeric tri-stable [2]rotaxanes incorporating TTF and MPTTF units were synthesized to measure the energy barriers during the movement of CBPQT(4+) ring. By strategically exchanging thiomethyl barriers with thioethyl groups, the movement of CBPQT(4+) ring in the synthesized compounds can be controlled to occur in only one direction. Cyclic voltammetry and H-1 NMR spectroscopy were used to investigate the switching mechanism. The results demonstrate the first successful induction of directional movement of CBPQT(4+) ring in molecular machines using a combination of TTF and MPTTF units with 90% efficiency.

Pd/Brønsted acid catalysed intramolecular N-allylation of indoles and pyrroles with alkynes for the synthesis of N-fused heterocycles

Saswat Ranjan Bhoi, Chhanda Debnath, Shikha Gandhi

Summary: In this article, a novel catalytic reaction using Pd(0) and Bronsted acid is reported for the synthesis of biologically important imidazolidinone-fused N-heterocycles through redox-neutral intramolecular N-allylation of indoles and pyrroles with alkynes. This atom-economical method is applicable to a wide range of substrates and eliminates the need for leaving groups or oxidizing agents commonly used in traditional allylation reactions.

Summary: This study presents the design and synthesis of sulfated disaccharide inhibitors based on IdoA(2S)-GlcNS(6S), which showed potent inhibition of Sulf-2. The results suggest that IdoA(2S)-GlcNS(6S) is the shortest fragment size required for effective inhibition of Sulfs, and a trisulfated disaccharide is identified as the minimal fragment size of heparan sulfate for effective endosulfatase inhibition.

Reductive cyclodimerization of chalcones: exploring the self-adaptability of galvanostatic electrosynthesis

Mauro Garbini, Andrea Brunetti, Riccardo Pedrazzani, Magda Monari, Massimo Marcaccio, Giulio Bertuzzi, Marco Bandini

Summary: The self-adaptability of galvanostatic electrolysis was found to be helpful in a multistage chemo- and diastereoselective electrochemically promoted cyclodimerization of chalcones. Through a series of reductive events, densely functionalized cyclopentanes with five contiguous stereocenters were obtained (25 examples, yields up to 95%, dr values up to >20:1). Further experimental and electrochemical investigations indicated the crucial role of dynamic kinetic resolution of the aldol intermediate in the reaction mechanism.

Dhananjay S. Nipate, Neha Meena, Prakash N. Swami, Krishnan Rangan, Anil Kumar

Summary: In this study, the synthesis of functionalized benzo[a]phenazines and indazolo[2,3-a]quinolines was achieved through Rh(III)-catalyzed oxidative annulation of 2-arylquinoxalines and 2-aryl-2H-indazoles with allyl alcohols. The method showed a wide substrate scope, excellent functional group tolerance, good to high yields of annulated products, and the capability for scaled-up synthesis. A tentative mechanism of the annulation reaction was proposed based on a preliminary mechanistic investigation.
