Summary: This paper established artificial neural network (ANN) models to predict the sorption capacity of heavy metal ions onto microplastics in global aquatic environments. The predicted sorption capacity was influenced by the initial concentration of heavy metal ions and the salinity in surrounding water. Aged microplastics had higher affinity to heavy metal ions than virgin microplastics, with larger microplastics showing less sorption of Cd, Pb, and Zn ions. The laboratory studies were found to provide useful information for projecting the sorption capacity of heavy metal ions onto microplastics in global aquatic environments.

Summary: This study developed a carboxylate polymer grafted montmorillonite to improve the adsorption capacity of heavy metals. The structural changes of montmorillonite before and after modification were characterized. The results showed that the modified method significantly enhanced the adsorption performance of montmorillonite for cadmium ions.

Summary: This study investigates the enhanced adsorption capacity of sodium polyacrylate (PAANa) on lead ions. It demonstrates that PAANa has a high sorption upper limit and can effectively adsorb lead ions due to its ion-exchange and chelating ability, as well as its loose and porous structure that increases specific surface area and sorption efficiency.

Summary: Microplastics have the potential to concentrate and transport heavy metals in the aquatic environment, with the sorption behavior of heavy metals onto them being pH and ionic strength dependent. Among the tested materials, polyvinylchloride PVC showed the highest maximum sorption capacity for lead (II) under the experimental conditions.

Summary: Hydroxyapatite (HAP) incorporated with ethylenediaminetetramethylene phosphonic acid (EDTMP) was prepared for the separation of toxic Zn2+ and Co2+ heavy metal ions in aqueous solution. The adsorption capacity of 20ED-HAP composite for Zn2+ and Co2+ reached 229.5 mg/g and 162.4 mg/g, respectively, which was significantly higher than that of synthesized HAP without EDTMP. The effects of different concentrations of common coexisting ions and the removal rate of Co2+ or Zn2+ in a simulated actual water environment were investigated.

Summary: This study investigated the performance of concrete with zeolite powder, showing that zeolite powder can delay the hydration of cement, resulting in a decrease in compressive strength at 28 days, but with higher strength and dense structure in later curing stages, gradually reducing porosity. In addition, zeolite has a good effect on absorbing heavy metals, with significantly lower leached heavy metals in cement paste with added zeolite than in the control group.

Summary: Lead contamination in the environment can cause serious health issues in humans. This study proposed a new method for sensitive detection of lead contamination using CRISPR technology. By combining two enzymes, the sensitivity of the detection was improved by 6.1 times compared to the original DNAzyme. The method can discriminate lead from interfering ions and can be performed at room temperature.

Summary: This paper presents a reflective-based method for detecting and estimating the activity of BoNT/C. The method utilizes two adjacent porous Si Fabry-Pe 'rot interferometers to quantify minute BoNT/C concentrations and assess their endopeptidase activity. The optical assay is highly sensitive, and the specificity and selectivity of the method are validated. In real-life scenarios, the method demonstrates excellent compliance for complex media analysis.

Summary: The modification of natural sand surface with organic nanostructured films can effectively remove heavy metal ions from water. In this study, branched poly(ethyleneimine) (PEI) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) were deposited onto different sizes of sand particles through a precipitation method, resulting in sand composites with high sorption properties. The amount of organic material deposited on the sand particles and their size affected the sorption of heavy metal ions in column experiments.

Summary: There is a growing interest in using plant waste for environmental protection materials. This study focused on preparing silica powders from various biomass materials, such as horsetail, common reed, wheat, and rye straws. The powders were obtained through a simple and low-cost procedure, which involved leaching the biomass materials in a boiling HCl solution, incinerating the samples, and removing the organic components. The resulting biosilica powders showed high purity and mainly consisted of SiO2. The horsetail-derived biosilica exhibited good adsorption capacity for removing Cr(VI) ions from water, particularly after surface modification with a surfactant. The biosilica also demonstrated low cytotoxicity to human endothelial cells, indicating its potential for safe use in environmental remediation.

Summary: In this study, DTPMP-modified hydroxyapatite was used to remove Pb2+, and its adsorption capacity was 10.4 times higher than that of commercial nanohydroxyapatite. Molecular dynamics simulations showed that the organic-phosphonic group of DTPMP had a stronger complex effect with calcium ions or lead ions, which improved the removal effect of DTPMP-doped hydroxyapatite composites for Pb2+ contaminants.
