Summary: A computational study was conducted on an azobenzene dimer to gain a full understanding of the factors governing the photoactivated isomerization processes. This study provides a conceptual/computational protocol that can be applied to generic multi-state photoswitches. A new dimer with a similar chemical design was designed and characterized, and theoretical calculations suggest that it is a step closer to a double photoswitch.

Summary: Photochromic compounds are utilized to develop neuron surrogates for neuromorphic engineering in wetware. The photochromic behaviors of (E)-3,4,6-trichloro-2-(p-diazenil)-phenol (t-DZH) and its conjugated phenoxide base (t-DZ) in various media have been experimentally investigated. The results suggest that t-DZH and t-DZ can serve as molecular probes and potential ingredients for implementing pacemaker neurons that communicate optically in wetware.

Summary: The article describes a system of pseudorotaxanes in which photon input triggers unidirectional motion of a macrocyclic ring with respect to a non-symmetric molecular axle, validating the photoinduced energy ratcheting mechanism. Fine changes in the axle structure were shown to improve motor performance. The design highlights the modularity and versatility, providing easy access to dynamic systems operating under photoinduced non-equilibrium regimes.

Summary: This study describes the design, synthesis, and properties of pseudorotaxanes, with a focus on the photoinduced energy ratcheting at the basis of the pumping mechanism. Using NMR spectroscopy, the dissipative non-equilibrium state generated by light irradiation was observed. Additionally, fine changes in the axle structure were shown to improve the performance of the motor, highlighting the modularity and versatility of this minimalist pump design.

Summary: In this study, a sulfonamide azobenzene ruthenium-arene complex was used to release triphenylphosphine, which activated (PdCl2)-Cl-II into Pd-0 catalyst for the photo-initiation of Sonogashira cross-coupling. Simple white LED strip lights were used to initiate the transformation, providing a high temporal response and the ability to control reaction rate by changing the irradiation time. Various substrates were successfully applied to this photo-initiated cross-coupling, demonstrating the wide functional-group tolerance of the photo-caged catalyst activator without the need for sophisticated photochemistry apparatus.

Summary: This study reports the characterization of commercially available Corning (R) Lab Photo Reactor using azobenzene E <-> Z photoisomerization for actinometry. Compared to previous chemical actinometric protocols, this method based on NMR spectroscopy is rapid, cheap, robust, reproducible, and applicable to the UVA-visible range.

Summary: In this study, an improved electric neutrality motor with a significant unidirectional rotary motion of approximately 78.8% was introduced. It was found that a very small pretwist of the reactive C=C bond (around 0.9 degrees) is sufficient to achieve such high probability of unidirectional rotation. Additionally, quantitative investigation of the excited state light-driven nonadiabatic dynamics of synthetic molecular motors was performed, revealing fluorescence emission quenching and a red shift of wavelength.

Summary: Cytidine ribonucleosides were studied in the gas phase with fixed-charge tags to probe the behavior of isolated nucleobase chromophores in different forms. The formation of protonated tautomers and hydrogen-adduct radical forms were observed, with the protonated forms favored under different conditions. Collision-induced dissociations of cytidine radicals were characterized by calculations of transition state structures and energies, revealing them to be more stable than previously reported adenosine and guanosine radicals.

Summary: Tunneling metal-insulator-metal (MIM) junctions can exhibit an open-circuit photovoltage (OCPV) response under illumination, with hot carrier tunneling as one mechanism for photovoltage generation. In experiments conducted on electromigrated planar MIM structures with asymmetric plasmonic properties using Au and Pt electrodes, it was found that optically excited local plasmonic modes preferentially create hot carriers on the Au side of the junction, leading to a preferred directionality and polarity of the hot electron photocurrent and resulting OCPV. In contrast, symmetric devices with only one Au electrode do not exhibit a preferred direction of the OCPV.

Summary: This article reports the synthesis and solid-state structures of DMAP-coordinated GaPn complexes, where Pn is Sb and Bi. In addition, the synthesis of base-free dipnictene dications is also reported. Quantum chemical calculations show that the dications 5(2+) and 6(2+) are isoelectronic analogues of the butadiene dication.

Summary: MeOAzB-T, a liquid crystalline terpolymer, exhibits unique optical properties under UV exposure, trapping absorbed photon energy and showing abnormal absorption behavior in certain states. Time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations confirm the role of H- and J-aggregations of MeOAzB units in the absorption increase, suggesting potential applications in solar thermal fuel systems.
