Summary: The study found that minor ischemic stroke with large vessel occlusion is not uncommon, and its characteristics include severe symptom presentation, decreased consciousness, cortical signs, especially aphasia and altered item level of consciousness. Emergency arterial imaging is needed for patients suspected of acute stroke, including those with minor symptoms, due to the absence of obvious predictors of proximal occlusion.

Summary: Accurate determination and diagnosis of ischemic stroke are crucial for providing excellent cerebrovascular care. It helps initiate appropriate prevention strategies, educate patients about specific risk factors, and predict patient outcomes. It also provides an opportunity for patients to participate in research studies and targeted treatments. Advances in research, imaging techniques, biomarkers, and genetic sequencing have challenged the traditional classification of stroke, leading to the identification of new entities and limitations in current diagnostic algorithms. This article reviews the steps for accurate classification and discusses emerging research and future directions in stroke diagnostics and classification.

Summary: The etiology and risk factors of pregnancy-associated ischemic stroke were analyzed in this study. It was found that the most common etiologies for pregnancy-associated ischemic stroke were cardioembolism and undetermined causes. Patients with pregnancy-associated ischemic stroke had a higher prevalence of traditional and pregnancy-related stroke risk factors compared to the control group, and the risk increased with the number of risk factors.

Summary: Transthoracic echocardiography plays a key role in investigating the etiology of ischemic stroke and reducing the proportion of patients with an undetermined TOAST classification. Echocardiography during hospitalization for ischemic stroke can improve prognosis and reduce in-hospital mortality risk, while being classified as undetermined TOAST type increases the chance of mortality during hospitalization.

Summary: This study examined gender differences in mortality and functional outcomes after a first-ever ischemic stroke in Korean males and females. The results showed that women had a higher 5-year mortality rate than men, and they also had worse outcomes in ambulatory, cognitive, language, and activities of daily living functions. These findings suggest the need for gender-specific stroke care and long-term management strategies.

Summary: The study found that while the all-cause mortality rate has decreased in ischemic stroke patients from rural areas in the United States, the stroke recurrence rate has significantly increased. Factors independently associated with mortality include older age, atrial fibrillation or flutter, heart failure, and prior ischemic stroke, while diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and age less than 65 years were predictors of ischemic stroke recurrence.

Summary: In this study, a longitudinal observational study was conducted among employees at a secondary care hospital affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The study compared the humoral immune response after natural infection or vaccination with different vaccines. The results showed that two doses of BioNTech/Pfizer vaccine resulted in a 100% humoral response rate. The antibody response after one dose of BNT162b2 or Vaxzevria was not significantly different from that after previous PCR-confirmed infection, but significantly lower than that after two doses of BioNTech/Pfizer. Smoking had a negative effect on the antibody response.

Summary: New coumarin esters with Schiff base linkage and different alkyl chains have been synthesized and studied for their mesomorphic behavior. The compounds were characterized using various analytical techniques and their phase transitions and mesophase behavior were investigated. The results showed that most of the synthesized compounds exhibited enantiotropic nematic phase, and some also displayed enantiotropic smectic C phase. The relationship between the structural parameters and the mesomorphic behavior was explained using DFT theoretical calculations and compared with experimental results.

Summary: Evidence from the BRIDGES study suggests that germline protein truncating variants (PTVs) in FANCM are associated with increased risk of ER-negative and triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), particularly for those with a family history. This study further investigates the association between FANCM missense variants (MVs) and breast cancer risk using the BRIDGES study, analyzing a total of 689 MVs. The results indicate that FANCM MVs may be low/moderate risk factors for ER-negative and TNBC subtypes of breast cancer.

Summary: New imine-based chalcone-ester liquid crystals with symmetric and unsymmetrical alkoxy chains were synthesized and characterized. The mesomorphic behavior of these compounds was studied, and the impact of different mesogenic units on their properties was discussed. Theoretical calculations were performed to explain their mesomorphic behavior in terms of aromaticity and 7C-7C stacking, and experimental results were correlated with calculated parameters such as polarizability, dipole moment, and aspect ratio. Molecular electrostatic potential and frontier molecular orbitals were also considered to demonstrate the influence of terminal chains and mesogenic cores on the energy gap of the frontier molecular orbitals and the distribution of electrostatic charges.

Summary: The spread of antibiotic-resistant opportunistic microbes is a significant socioeconomic burden. In this study, two endophytic fungal strains isolated from Mangifera Indica roots were identified and tested for their antimicrobial activity. The secondary metabolites produced by these fungi showed the highest activity against Staphylococcus aureus and E. coli. Additionally, the combination of these fungal metabolites with a dicationic pyridinium iodide compound exhibited a synergistic effect against Klebsiella pneumoniae.
