Lesions in the cerebellum produce various symptoms related to balance and motor coordination. However, the relationship between the exact topographical localization of a lesion and the resulting symptoms is not well understood in humans. In this study, we analyzed 66 consecutive patients with isolated cerebellar infarctions demonstrated on diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging. We identified the involved lobules in these patients using a cross-referencing tool of the picture archiving and communication system, and we investigated the relationships between the sites of the lesions and specific symptoms using chi (2) tests and logistic regression analysis. The most common symptoms in patients with isolated cerebellar infarctions were vertigo (87%) and lateropulsion (82%). Isolated vertigo or lateropulsion without any other symptoms was present in 38% of patients. On the other hand, limb ataxia was a presenting symptom in only 40% of the patients. Lateropulsion, vertigo, and nystagmus were more common in patients with a lesion in the caudal vermis. Logistic regression analysis showed that lesions in the posterior paravermis or nodulus were independently associated with lateropulsion. Lesions in the nodulus were associated with contralateral pulsion, and involvement of the culmen was associated with ipsilateral pulsion and isolated lateropulsion without vertigo. Nystagmus was associated with lesions in the pyramis lobule, while lesions of the anterior paravermis were associated with dysarthria and limb ataxia. Our results showed that the cerebellar lobules are responsible for producing specific symptoms in cerebellar stroke patients.

Motivating factors of compliance to government's COVID-19 preventive guidelines: An investigation using discrete choice model

Sol Kwon, Hae-Sun Suh, Chung-Mo Nam, Hye-Young Kang

Summary: This study aimed to identify the factors that motivate public compliance with the government's COVID-19 preventive recommendations. The severity of COVID-19 symptoms and the risk of infection were found to be the most influential health-related factors, while social consequences and the risk of spreading infection also played a role. Respondents' behavior varied based on their socioeconomic characteristics and COVID-19 experience.

Role of Enlarged Perivascular Space in the Temporal Lobe in Cerebral Amyloidosis

Han Kyu Na, Han-Kyeol Kim, Hye Sun Lee, Mina Park, Jae Hoon Lee, Young Hoon Ryu, Hanna Cho, Chul Hyoung Lyoo

Summary: By studying 272 participants with MRI and PET scans, we found that a high degree of temporal lobe perivascular space (EPVS) is associated with a higher likelihood of amyloid positivity in patients with Alzheimer's disease. This finding suggests that impaired perivascular drainage may be related to cerebral amyloidosis.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the differences in incidence of pancreatic cancer between new-onset diabetes mellitus (NODM) and long-standing DM (LSDM). The results showed that the risk of pancreatic cancer was higher in the group with diabetes compared to the non-diabetes group, and the risk was higher in the NODM group than in the LSDM group, especially in men and patients in their 50s.

Inverse Relationship between Serum 25-Hydroxyvitamin D and Elevated Intraocular Pressure

Jun-Hyuk Lee, Yu-Jin Kwon, Hye Sun Lee, Jee Hye Han, Boyoung Joung, Sung Jin Kim

Summary: This study confirms an inverse dose-dependent association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels and elevated intraocular pressure (EIOP) in a large sample of 15,338 individuals. Each unit increase in serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D is associated with a 3% decrease in the odds of having EIOP. Compared to individuals deficient in 25-hydroxyvitamin D, those with insufficiency and sufficiency have a 28% and 49% lower odds of EIOP, respectively. Therefore, clinical assessment of intraocular pressure may be helpful in the treatment and prevention of glaucoma in patients with insufficient 25-hydroxyvitamin D.

Dietary Zinc Intake and All-Cause and Cardiovascular Mortality in Korean Middle-Aged and Older Adults

Yu-Jin Kwon, Hye Sun Lee, Goeun Park, Juyeon Yang, Hyung-Mi Kim, Ji-Won Lee

Summary: This study investigated the association between dietary zinc intake and total deaths, cancer, and cardiovascular disease death. The results showed that dietary zinc intake was inversely associated with all-cause mortality and cardiovascular disease mortality, but not with cancer mortality. These findings suggest that recommending optimal dietary zinc intake is beneficial for human health.

Differential association between apolipoprotein B and LDL cholesterol and cerebral atherosclerosis according to pre-stroke statin use

Minyoul Baik, Hyo Suk Nam, Ji Hoe Heo, Hye Sun Lee, Young Dae Kim

Summary: This study investigated the association between atherosclerotic stenosis and LDL-C or ApoB levels in ischemic stroke patients, and whether there is a difference in the association according to preadmission statin use. The results showed that both LDL-C and ApoB levels were associated with stenosis location, and there was an interaction between pre-admission statin use and LDL-C level. ApoB was consistently associated with symptomatic ICAS, regardless of statin use.

Prognostic value of central blood pressure on the outcomes of embolic stroke of undetermined source

Minho Han, JoonNyung Heo, Il Hyung Lee, Joon Ho Kim, Hyungwoo Lee, Jae Wook Jung, In Hwan Lim, Soon-Ho Hong, Young Dae Kim, Hyo Suk Nam

Summary: We investigated the prognostic impact of central blood pressure (BP) on outcomes in patients with embolic stroke of undetermined source (ESUS), and evaluated the prognostic value of central BP according to ESUS subtype. Over a median of 45.8 months, 746 patients with ESUS were enrolled and followed up. Our findings showed that central BP can predict poor long-term prognosis in ESUS patients, especially those with the no cause ESUS subtype.

Summary: This retrospective observational study of 350 patients with basal ganglia infarction found that degeneration of the substantia nigra (SN) was associated with functional dependence or death at 3 months post-stroke. The presence of SN degeneration was significantly correlated with worse functional outcomes, indicating its potential as a predictive factor for poor stroke prognosis and a target for therapeutic interventions.
