Effect of zinc substitution on magneto-optical properties of Mn1-xZnxFe2O4/SiO2 nanocomposites

Zn doped manganese ferrites (MZF)/SiO2 (Mn1-xZnxFe2O4/SiO2 (x=0.0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0)) nanocomposites with different Mn contents were successfully synthesized by a modified sol-gel autocombustion route using citric acid as a chelating agent and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as a source of silica matrix. Silica coatings were done via a modified Stober method. Optical properties of MnZn-ferrites were improved by coating them with silica. The nitrate-citrate-silica gel exhibited self-propagating combustion behavior, and it is directly transformed into nanosized MnZn-ferrite nanoparticles with spinel cubic crystal structure. MZF/SiO2 nanocomposites show superparamagnetic behavior at room temperature (RT). The highest M-s value is about 73 Oe for Mn0.6Zn0.4Fe2O4 sample. This value is slightly less than that of the bulk Mn-ferrite, which is about 80 emu/g. The higher M-s value was attributed to cation distribution change from normal spinel to mixed structure. The diffuse reflectance (DR) measurements were applied to determine the band gap (E-g) of samples. The estimated E-g value of SiO2 coated ZnFe2O4 samples (1.95 eV) is in accordance with the literature values. Silica coating has a positive impact on the optical band gap (E-g) of MZF/SiO2 nanocomposite. In addition, the raising optical E-g values by increasing Mn content were observed for MZF/SiO2 nanocomposites. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. All rights reserved.

The magnetic and structural properties were studied, revealing different magnetic behaviors at different temperatures. This research provides new data support for the study of rare earth magnetic materials.

Summary: In this study, [Ni0.4Cu0.2Zn0.4](Fe2-xDyx)O-4 spinel ferrite nanoparticles with different Dy3+ concentrations were synthesized using a citrate sol-gel auto-combustion technique. It was found that an increase in Dy3+ concentration led to changes in crystal structure parameters and slight alterations in particle size and specific surface area. Dy3+ ions preferentially occupied the octahedral B site due to their larger ionic radius, affecting the electrical and magnetic properties of the nanoparticles. Changes in microwave properties and electromagnetic absorption were attributed to the microstructure characteristics and the presence of dysprosium-oxygen-iron indirect exchange.

Summary: Dy3+ ion-substituted nanoferrites were synthesized via sol-gel method, and their chemical composition, crystal structure, electrical, magnetic, and microwave properties were investigated. The samples exhibited a single-phase state with a decrease in average crystallite size and a superparamagnetic character at room temperature. Microwave properties were discussed in terms of electromagnetic absorption in the frequency range of 1-20 GHz.

Summary: In this study, unique Mn0.5Zn0.5ErxYxFe1.8-2xO4 SFNPs were synthesized using ultrasonication (sonochemical) approach. The electrical and dielectric features of these SFNPs were comprehensively examined, and it was found that their conductivity and dielectric properties can be adjusted by the co-substitutional ratios of Er3+ and Y3+ ions.

Summary: SrInxFe12-xO4/Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 (0.00 <= x <= 0.04) nanocomposites (SIFO/NZFO NCs) were synthesized using a one-pot sol-gel auto-combustion technique. The impact of indium doping on the magnetic properties of the nano-composites was investigated, and it was found that the saturation magnetization, remanence magnetization, and coercive field showed a non-monotonic dependence on the indium content.
