Summary: A scaffold with high antimicrobial properties was successfully fabricated using (Ba, Ca)(Ti, Zr)O3 (BCTZ) and coated with 13-93 bioactive glass. The polarized surface of the BCTZ scaffold showed a good antibacterial response, resulting in a significant reduction in the survival rate of Escherichia coli bacteria. Overall, this approach can improve biocompatibility, prevent ion leaching, and provide good antibacterial characteristics to the scaffolds.

Summary: The polarization response and defect mechanism of (Ba, Ca)(Zr, Ti)O3 piezoelectric ceramics were extensively studied through doping modification. Aluminum doping led to reduced piezoelectric polarization response but improved fatigue resistance and quality factor, demonstrating acceptor characteristics. The role of defect dipole and oxygen vacancy in improving cyclic fatigue behavior was distinguished using thermally stimulated depolarization currents (TSDC). The formation of oxygen vacancies by aluminum doping was confirmed to contribute to the improvement of fatigue behavior. This study provides a promising method to understand the origin of piezoelectric characteristics based on defect configuration in advanced dielectrics.

Summary: The effects of different sintering atmospheres (O2, N2, and air) on the dielectric, ferroelectric, and piezoelectric properties of PNNZT ceramics were investigated. The results showed that the sintering atmospheres have a significant impact on the properties of PNNZT ceramics. PNNZT ceramics sintered in O2 exhibited the best piezoelectric properties, while those sintered in N2 showed the lowest piezoelectric properties but with good temperature stability. The variation in electrical properties among ceramics sintered in different atmospheres may be attributed to different vacancy defect types.

Summary: Lead-free piezoelectric ceramics with perovskite structure can exhibit excellent properties when specific phase transitions sequences and/or coexistence of multiple phases are involved. However, characterizing these phase transitions using isolated techniques can be inconclusive or require complex procedures. This study aimed to explore the combination of different techniques to investigate temperature-induced phase transitions and phase coexistence in ceramics of 0.66Ba(Zr0.2Ti0.8)O-3-0.44(Ba0.7Ca0.3)TiO3 (0.44BCZT), revealing three phase transitions and confirming physical anomalies indicating phase coexistence.

Summary: For Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3 (BNT)-based materials, regulating temperature and composition can induce giant electro-strain under the critical condition. However, only the temperature-dependent regulation method achieves low hysteresis and maintains a high strain under high ergodic condition. The discrepancy between these two regulation methods lies in their different regulation mechanisms, especially in terms of the microscopic structure and polar entities.

Summary: The resistivity and leakage current of bismuth ferrite-barium titanate-based ceramics have been regulated in this study by changing the relaxation degree and defect dipoles. Introduction of Sb led to improved resistivity in relaxor ferroelectrics with chemical-homogeneous grain structure and strip-shaped/submicron-sized coexisted domains, while deteriorated properties appeared in relaxors with core-shell structure and tweed-like ferroelectric domains. The improved insulation in relaxor-ferroelectrics was attributed to decreased concentration of oxygen vacancies and Ti3+, while the emergence of core-shell structure and conductive channels resulted in decreased resistivity.

Summary: A fundamental understanding of the surface reconstruction process is crucial for the development of efficient electrocatalysts based on the lattice oxygen oxidation mechanism (LOM). Contrary to previous beliefs, the surface reconstruction in LOM-based metal oxides is found to be a spontaneous chemical reaction process rather than an electrochemical process. During this process, lattice oxygen atoms are attacked by adsorbed water molecules, leading to the formation of hydroxide ions (OH-). The leaching of metal-site soluble atoms from the oxygen-deficient surface also occurs. Additionally, it is discovered that enhancing surface hydrophilicity can accelerate the surface reconstruction process, providing further insights into the mechanism.

Summary: By adjusting the content of Eu, enhanced piezoelectricity and improved luminescent property can be achieved in KNN ceramics with bimodal distribution and refined grain size, respectively. The addition of Eu destroys long-range ferroelectric orders, leading to the formation of pseudo-cubic phase and polar nanoregions. First-principles calculations show that Eu substitution affects the local electric/elastic fields and crystal fields, benefiting to the luminescent behavior. We believe that this work can benefit to the development of KNN transparent luminescent ceramics and light-emitting devices.

Summary: The growth of a 5 μm thick AlN thin film on a patterned (0001) sapphire substrate was studied using a probe aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscope. By analyzing the twisted atomic structure at different depths, it was found that a 1.6 degrees twist of the c-planes balanced over 10% of local tensile and compressive strain within the first micron of growth. This led to a reduction in threading dislocations. The in-plane twist decreased towards the layer surface down to 0.5 degrees, indicating improved crystal quality.

Summary: Due to the demand for environmental protection, developing eco-friendly piezoelectric applications/materials is an inevitable trend. The market share of lead-free materials, particularly Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3 (BNT), is growing steadily due to its superior strain property. While chemical modification is the mainstream strain regulation method, the intrinsic strain regulation mechanism and the role of dopants in BNT-based materials are still ambiguous. This review explores the intrinsic strain regulation mechanism from both macro and micro perspectives, providing insights into the strain origination and regulation methods for rational experimental design.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of K/Na ratio on the phase structure, ferroelectric domains, and piezoelectric properties of potassium sodium niobate (KNN)-based ceramics. It reveals that high Na+ content leads to large ferroelectric domains, while high K+ content results in local polarity heterogeneity and distinct dielectric relaxational behavior. The balanced local polarity and stress heterogeneities contribute to improved piezoelectricity.

Summary: Rare earth doping is widely used to enhance the electrical properties of piezo/ferroelectric materials. In this study, two types of rare earth ions with different ion radii (La3+ and Sm3+) were introduced into Bi1-xRexFeO3-BaTiO3 ceramics. The results showed that doping an appropriate amount of rare earth ions can effectively improve the ferroelectricity and strain response. The enhancement of electrical properties can be attributed to the increase in the number of activated domains, increased off-centering of Bi ions, displacement of B-site ions, and enhanced lattice deformation. Notably, Sm-doped ceramics exhibited stronger intrinsic ferroelectric and strain response compared to La-doped ceramics, although a larger electric field was required to release the intrinsic response due to the larger ionic radius difference between Bi3+ and Sm3+.
