Summary: With the increasing attention to dental health, various dental treatment procedures have emerged. However, these procedures often result in the production of a large number of free radicals, causing oxidative stress and damage. This article reviews the origin of these free radicals, the types of antioxidants, and their mechanisms. The delivery of antioxidants in dental procedures and their feasibility for clinical applications are also discussed. Additionally, the importance of safety assessment for these materials and future challenges in antioxidant development are highlighted.

Summary: This review aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of prophylactic antibiotic administration before invasive dental procedures in individuals at risk of bacterial endocarditis. Based on the available evidence, there is currently no definitive evidence to support the use of prophylactic antibiotics in reducing the incidence of bacterial endocarditis. The potential harms and costs of antibiotic administration compared to the potential benefits remain uncertain.

Summary: This study evaluated the timing, duration, and incidence of bacteremia following invasive dental procedures and activities of daily living. Dental extractions, scaling and root planing, and oral health procedures had the highest frequency of bacteremia, while toothbrushing, flossing, and chewing also caused bacteremia but with lower frequency.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the distribution and persistence of dental aerosol and splatter by introducing fluorescein into irrigation reservoirs. The results showed that dental procedures generate aerosol and splatter, with contamination being effectively cleared by suction and within 30 minutes post-procedure. The two analytic methods used in the study showed good correlation.

Summary: The study found that using high-volume evacuation (HVE) or HVE plus local exhaust ventilation (LEV) can effectively prevent the spread and persistence of aerosols generated during dental procedures. Additionally, the use of enclosures can restrict the spread of aerosols outside of the operating area.

Summary: This study examines the opinions of Malaysian clinical specialists on antibiotic prophylaxis for infective endocarditis based on the 2008 NICE guideline. A questionnaire was distributed to 794 specialists, with a response rate of 34.9%. Overall, 49.8% of respondents believed in adhering to the guideline, while a majority of oral and maxillofacial surgeons disagreed. Dental procedures such as surgery for an impacted tooth, dental implant surgery, periodontal surgery, and dental extraction in patients with poor oral hygiene were perceived as moderate-to-high risk for IE.

Summary: This study focused on bacteremia following oral and maxillofacial surgical procedures in Nigerians, finding that 33.1% of patients had bacteremia postoperatively. Patients with inflammatory dental diseases were more likely to have bacteremia during extractions, emphasizing the need for antibiotic prophylaxis in 'at risk' patients.

Summary: The study systematically reviewed the prevalence of bacteraemia triggered by dental intervention and home oral hygiene practices in children, finding that the risk was lowest with daily manual toothbrushing and routine professional cleaning, while power toothbrushing increased the risk. Limited evidence exists on children without gingivitis or systemic diseases.

Summary: The study established a method to visualize contamination from splatters and aerosols produced by common dental instruments, showing that high-speed handpieces generated the most splatter particles and triplex syringes produced the largest amount of aerosols.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the impact of different cleaning methods on two polymeric materials used in prosthodontics as non-adhesive permanent liners. The results showed that Mollosil Plus material should be decontaminated with the use of a toothbrush or toothbrush with soap, while Plastitanium material should be disinfected. Plastitanium samples are more susceptible to damage during the decontamination procedures than Mollosil Plus.

Summary: This study analyzed the appropriateness of antibiotic prophylaxis in dental visits and found that unnecessary antibiotic prophylaxis was highly prevalent but decreased over time. Factors associated with unnecessary prophylaxis included age, sex, geographic region, rurality, type of antibiotic, and dental procedure. Antimicrobial stewardship strategies targeting dentists are needed.

Summary: This study compared the use of small-particle and large-particle bone grafts in lateral ridge augmentation procedures. The results showed that the use of large-particle grafts resulted in greater ridge gain. Additionally, the small-particle group showed better bone density and greater vital bone formation.
