A meta-analysis published in 2015 noted a marginally increased risk of endometrial and ovarian cancers in non-smoking women with dietary acrylamide intake, but only a few studies were included, and they were limited to Western countries. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between dietary acrylamide intake and endometrial or ovarian cancer risk in the Japan Public Health Center-based Prospective Study (JPHC Study). In this prospective cohort study, 47185 participants aged 45-74years at the follow-up starting point in the JPHC Study were enrolled. Dietary acrylamide intake was assessed using a validated food frequency questionnaire. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI). In participants with endometrial and ovarian cancer, the average follow-up periods were 15.5 and 15.6years, respectively, and 161 and 122 cases of endometrial and ovarian cancer were diagnosed, respectively. Energy-adjusted dietary acrylamide intake was negatively associated with endometrial cancer, but the association disappeared after adjusting for coffee consumption with an adjusted HR for the highest vs lowest tertile of 0.85 (95%CI: 0.54-1.33). No association was observed, however, for ovarian cancer (adjusted HR, 0.77; 95%CI: 0.49-1.23). Furthermore, after stratifying by smoking status, coffee consumption, alcohol consumption, body mass index, and menopause status, no association was observed. Dietary acrylamide intake was not associated with the risk of endometrial or ovarian cancer in Japanese women with a relatively lower dietary intake of acrylamide compared with Western populations.

Association of chronic kidney disease with total and site-specific cancer incidence in participants of the Japan Public Health Center-based Prospective Study

Summary: This study investigated the association between chronic kidney disease (CKD) and cancer incidence. The findings suggest that a low estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is not significantly associated with an increased risk of total cancer incidence in patients with CKD, possibly due to the underpowered sample size and shared risk factors between CKD and cancer.

Acrylamide and Glycidamide Hemoglobin Adduct Levels and Breast Cancer Risk in Japanese Women: A Nested Case-Control Study in the JPHC

Summary: In this nested case-control study, no association was observed between acrylamide (AA) and glycidamide (GA) hemoglobin adducts (HbAA and HbGA) and breast cancer, except for a positive association between the HbGA/HbAA ratio and breast cancer. The risk of breast cancer associated with acrylamide may need to be evaluated by considering not only the absolute amount of HbAA or HbGA but also the HbGA/HbAA ratio and the activity of metabolic genes.

Association Between Diet and Fusobacterium nucleatum in the Feces of Healthy Adults: A Hospital-based Cross-sectional Study

Summary: This study examined the association between dietary factors and fecal F. nucleatum in healthy adults. It found a significant inverse association between high intake of dairy products and the presence of F. nucleatum in the feces, suggesting that dairy products may have a preventive effect on colorectal cancer through reducing F. nucleatum.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the potential effect of dietary diversity on the risk of disabling dementia in a nationwide large-scale cohort of the Japanese population. The study found that dietary diversity was inversely associated with disabling dementia among women, but there was no significant association among men.

Summary: We evaluated the validity of diabetes definitions using disease codes and antidiabetic drug prescriptions in the Japanese DPC data via medical chart review. The results showed that DPC data can accurately identify diabetes among inpatients using either diabetes codes alone or diabetes codes and/or prescriptions.

Association of pneumococcal vaccination with cardiovascular diseases in older adults: The vaccine effectiveness, networking, and universal safety (VENUS) study

Nobuhiro Narii, Tetsuhisa Kitamura, Sho Komukai, Ling Zha, Masayo Komatsu, Fumiko Murata, Megumi Maeda, Kosuke Kiyohara, Tomotaka Sobue, Haruhisa Fukuda

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the protective effect of the 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23) on cardiovascular events in adults aged >= 65 years. The results showed that individuals who were PPSV23 vaccinated had significantly lower odds of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) or stroke events compared to unvaccinated individuals. More recent PPSV23 vaccination was associated with even lower odds ratios for AMI or stroke.

Lack of significant associations between single nucleotide polymorphisms in LPAL2-LPA genetic region and all cancer incidence and mortality in Japanese population: The Japan public health center-based prospective study

Makiko Naka Mieno, Maria Yamasaki, Aya Kuchiba, Taiki Yamaji, Keigo Ide, Noriko Tanaka, Norie Sawada, Manami Inoue, Shoichiro Tsugane, Motoji Sawabe, Motoki Iwasaki

Summary: This study investigated the association between SNPs in the LPA region and cancer incidence and mortality in Japanese individuals. The results showed that none of the 25 SNPs in the LPAL2-LPA region were significantly associated with overall cancer incidence or mortality. However, some SNPs were found to be associated with stomach cancer incidence and mortality in men, as well as colorectal cancer incidence in men and prostate cancer incidence in carriers of certain SNPs. Further analysis using different cohorts is needed to confirm these findings.

Summary: This study aimed to develop and validate models to predict the 5-year incidence of T2DM in a Japanese population. The risk scores were developed using data from two different cohorts, and both non-invasive and invasive predictors were considered. The invasive model with HbA1c and FPG showed the highest discriminative ability.
