Summary: This study investigated the root canal configuration of maxillary and mandibular first molars using CBCT scans and found that the majority of molars had three roots and three canals. Additionally, a significant association was observed between gender and the number of canals in maxillary molars.

Summary: The study characterized Neolithic human maxillary molars from the Jiaojia site in Shandong, China, and compared their ultrastructural features with modern locals. Neolithic molars showed smaller crown and root sizes, shorter canal inter-orifice distances, and a trend towards larger tooth size and more dispersed MB2 canals in modern individuals over a short evolutionary period. Additionally, modern males had significantly higher prevalence of MB2 canals in first and second molars compared to their ancient counterparts.

Summary: Adequate knowledge and accurate characterization of root and canal anatomy are crucial for successful root canal treatment. A new coding system has been introduced to classify root and canal morphology, accessory canals, and anomalies. Micro-CT and CBCT have been extensively used to study root and canal anatomy, and this review aims to discuss the application of the new coding system and provide a detailed guide for appropriate characterization.

Summary: The present study used micro-CT to measure and compare anatomic parameters in contralateral maxillary second molars. The results showed a high degree of symmetry in linear measurements and root canal anatomy configuration. A significant proportion of the roots had lateral canals, with the apical third being the most common location. This study provides valuable insight into the root canal anatomy of contralateral maxillary second molars.

Summary: This study reviewed the characteristics of the second mesiobuccal canal (MB2) in the maxillary molars of 500 patients in Fujian, China. The study found a high incidence of MB2, which was influenced by gender, age, and MB root length. Additionally, MB2 occurred symmetrically in adjacent molars and contralateral molars of the same type.

Summary: This study investigated the frequency of interradicular canals and diverticula in mandibular and maxillary molars. The results showed that the frequency of diverticula originating from the pulp chamber was higher than those originating from the furcation area. Clinicians should be aware of the existence of diverticula to ensure successful endodontic treatment.

Summary: This study evaluated the root and canal morphology of permanent maxillary first premolars in a Polish population using CBCT scanning and compared the classifications by Vertucci and Ahmed et al. The results showed a wide range of anatomical variations in the root and canal morphology of these teeth, with the new classification system proposed by Ahmed et al. being more accurate than the traditional Vertucci classification.

Summary: Endodontists should be aware that some maxillary second molars can have more than three roots and should conduct CBCT scanning if any unusual anatomical features are detected. CBCT can provide three-dimensional reconstructed images of the root canal system, allowing for the identification of variations in root number and canal morphology. Knowledge of these variations is important for the success of endodontic treatment. This report suggests not assuming that a MSM has only three tooth roots, which is the most prevalent number.

Summary: This study found that the MB-P interorifice distance is a strong predictor of the presence of the MB2 canal in maxillary second molars with fused roots. The MB-P distance showed good diagnostic accuracy in predicting the MB2 canal, providing valuable information for clinicians to identify and treat this specific condition effectively.

Summary: This review systematically explored the efficacy of nano-hydroxyapatite (nHA) in reducing or remineralizing initial caries lesions through in vivo or in situ studies. The results showed that nHA did not significantly hinder demineralization under demineralization conditions, but exhibited a similar remineralizing potential to NaF under remineralizing conditions. However, the limited number of studies, high risk of bias, and low level of evidence prevent conclusive evidence on the efficacy of nHA.

Summary: The aim of this in vitro study was to compare the caries-preventive effect of various high fluoride- and calcium-containing caries-preventive agents in adjunct to use of regular or high fluoride toothpaste on sound as well as demineralized enamel. Results showed that all fluoride varnishes/solutions significantly reduced demineralization, with a significant dose-response characteristic for fluoride varnishes, but no additional benefit could be observed when varnishes were combined with high fluoride instead of regular fluoride dentifrices.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate caries prevalence and severity and health inequalities among Italian preschool children with European and non-European background, as well as to explore the potential existence of a social gradient. The results showed that caries prevalence was significantly higher in children with non-European background compared to European children. Higher household income was associated with lower levels of caries. Factors associated with caries prevalence included immigrant status, parents' occupational and educational level, number of children in the family, living in the North-Western Italian area, and high household income. The social gradient was significantly associated with different caries levels and experience in children with European background.

Summary: Vital pulp therapy (VPT) has been proposed as an alternative approach for symptomatic mature permanent teeth with deep caries lesions, aiming to maintain pulp vitality and avoid non-surgical root canal therapy. Pain assessment plays a key role in the success of VPT, and proper assessment of pulp inflammation and choice of appropriate materials are important factors for enhancing VPT success.

Summary: Although oral health is important for overall health, dentistry is neglected in medical education. Interprofessional education (IPE) can promote collaboration and reduce barriers in healthcare. A study at Mainz University in Germany surveyed medical and dental students on interdisciplinary knowledge, interprofessional standing, and attitudes towards IPE. Dental students had higher interdisciplinary knowledge and both groups valued the other discipline. Students with prior professional training valued the synergy of medicine and dentistry more.

Summary: This study uses a global survey to examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on dentists, with a focus on their perception of infection risk. The results show that dentists in Europe and Asia are more likely to be infected at work, while Australian dentists feel less at risk due to low infection rates. Additionally, the study found that a significant number of American dentists only treated emergencies, while Europeans and Asians provided mostly routine care.

Summary: This study reviewed and evaluated the cost-effectiveness of treatment decisions in early childhood caries (ECC) in infants and toddlers. The results showed variation in the efficacy of different interventions and documented cost-effectiveness data. Socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic differences need to be considered when comparing cost-effectiveness. A shift from surgical to preventive treatment decisions was observed. Further research is needed to determine the best practice approach and the most cost-effective therapies for ECC in infants and toddlers.
