Summary: This article provides an overview of potential vaping-cessation interventions in adult former smokers. The interventions reviewed include varenicline, bupropion, nicotine-replacement therapies (NRTs), and behavioural therapy. Evidence for intervention effectiveness is provided when available, while recommendations for other interventions are extrapolated from case studies or smoking-cessation guidelines. The limitations of these interventions, a lack of prospective studies, and the challenges to vaping safety are also discussed.

Summary: COVID-19, caused by SARS-CoV-2, is a severe respiratory and systemic disease posing a huge global challenge. Risk factors for disease severity include systemic arterial hypertension, diabetes, obesity, older age, and other infections. Smoking and COPD, common comorbidities in COVID-19 patients, may increase inflammation markers during the disease course, suggesting their role as risk factors for severe COVID-19.

Summary: The study identified a bacterial microbiome signature in the peripheral blood of current and former smokers for the first time. Understanding the relationships between systemic microbial signatures and lung-related phenotypes may inform novel interventions and aid in understanding the systemic effects of smoking.

Summary: The study shows that DNA methylation can classify smoking status with close to 65% accuracy, especially in distinguishing between current and former smokers. Different DNAm models demonstrate reasonable accuracy in smoking status classification, contributing to better representation of real-world populations.

Summary: Genome-wide association studies have identified the BDNF locus on chromosome 11 as the only SNP associated with both smoking behavior and body mass index in multiple populations. This study reveals a unique genetic predisposition to obesity in former smokers with certain BDNF SNPs, particularly in heavy smokers. Further research is needed to understand the underlying mechanisms of these associations.

Summary: This study found a correlation between the consumption of cruciferous vegetables and the frequency of bulky DNA damage. Higher intake of cruciferous vegetables was associated with a reduction in DNA damage, particularly in former smokers. Therefore, increasing the consumption of cruciferous vegetables may have potential cancer prevention benefits.

Summary: Muscle wasting is a known complication in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and acute respiratory exacerbations are associated with accelerated skeletal muscle loss, equivalent to 6 months of age-expected decline in muscle mass. This study highlights the importance of addressing exacerbation-associated muscle loss as a therapeutic target.

Summary: Indoor particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide are associated with lung function decline among smokers, especially former smokers. Former smokers living in homes with high PM levels have accelerated lung function loss, while those in homes with low PM levels have lung function loss similar to normal aging.

Summary: Significant differences were found in the associations between exposure to the Tips From Former Smokers campaign and quit intentions or attempts between sexual minority and heterosexual smokers. Heterosexual smokers showed stronger reactions to the campaign, with higher odds of quit intentions and attempts, while sexual minority smokers had weaker associations with the campaign.

Summary: Lung cancer screening provides an opportunity for smoking cessation and relapse prevention. This study found that non-smokers with negative screening results were more likely to start smoking, while current smokers who attended multiple screenings had a significantly reduced chance of quitting smoking. Factors such as age, gender, occupational exposure, income, and smoking pack years were also associated with smoking behavior changes.

Summary: This study aimed to characterize the psychiatric and nonpsychiatric correlates of tobacco smoking status in individuals with bipolar disorder (BD). The findings showed that current smokers had higher levels of depression, anxiety, and impulsivity compared to former and never-smokers. Current smokers were also at a higher risk of comorbid substance use disorders and metabolic syndrome. Therefore, there is a strong need to implement strategies to treat tobacco addiction in the BD population.

Summary: Smoking is a factor that triggers asthma and has contributed to the increase in asthma incidence in China. Current smokers with asthma should prioritize smoking cessation for proper management. However, there is limited data on predictors of smoking cessation in Chinese asthma patients. This study aimed to identify factors associated with smoking cessation by comparing clinical characteristics between current and former smokers with asthma. The study found that smoking cessation was positively correlated with age, female sex, pack-years, years of smoking, partially controlled asthma, uncontrolled asthma, and body mass index (BMI), but was negatively correlated with ACT, FEV1, FEV1%predicted, and widowed status. These findings highlight the need to focus on these factors in asthma smoking cessation interventions to improve patient outcomes.

Summary: By analyzing blood gene expression data using network perturbation analysis, this study identified four distinct gene network subtypes in COPD patients, which showed significant differences in symptoms, exercise capacity, and mortality. These subtypes were independently validated in two external cohorts and could be used for patient stratification and disease prognosis.
