Summary: The nationwide survey revealed racial differences among oncology physicians in perceived barriers to genetic counseling and testing for breast cancer patients. It highlighted the need for education and interventions to address biases among physicians, recognizing that lack of trust and noncompliance are significant barriers, particularly for African American women. Awareness of these biases can pave the way for efforts to achieve greater equity in genetic counseling and testing for African American women with breast cancer.

Summary: This paper examines the challenges associated with interchangeably using the terms Black and African American in health research, as well as the importance of chosen identity labels for descendants of the African diaspora. The paper uses communication theory of identity and critical race theory to analyze the discursive challenges in recruiting African diaspora descendants for health research, and calls for more research into the effects of mislabeling.

Summary: The study found that only a minority of African American women participants underwent genetic testing, with lower income and experiencing job discrimination decreasing the likelihood of testing. The results support the need for interventions to improve the uptake of genetic testing among African American women by reducing cost barriers and providing assurances that genetic results will be kept private.

Summary: The study found that racial disparities among cutaneous melanoma patients have worsened from before the year 2000 to 2010 or later. Patients with localized disease across all minority groups suffered increasing disparity, highlighting the need for improved postdiagnosis management for minorities to mitigate disparity and improve survival.

Summary: Women of sub-Saharan African descent have a higher incidence and mortality rate of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). This study conducted RNA sequencing on African Americans and Africans with TNBC, revealing associations between African ancestry and gene expression profiles and immunologic landscapes. These findings may explain the racial differences in clinical outcomes.

Summary: The cervical cancer screening behaviors of Arab American women are not well understood due to the lack of a specific US Census category for Middle Eastern North African (MENA) descent. This study aimed to evaluate the predictors of cervical cancer screening among MENA, White, and Black women in southeast Michigan. The findings showed that MENA women screened less often if they had been in the US for less than ten years and if they were single, and religion was not associated with screening in any population.

Summary: Cervical cancer in women over 65 is often diagnosed at advanced stages and many do not receive treatment. Early diagnosis and treatment can improve survival rates for this age group. Re-evaluation of screening and treatment practices for older women is needed to detect cervical cancer at earlier stages and increase survival rates.

Summary: African American (AA) males in cancer treatment had higher odds of experiencing moderate to severe distress compared to White males. There was no significant difference between White and AA females, race and age, or race and socioeconomic status with regards to distress during cancer treatment. This study highlights the importance of addressing the specific needs and experiences of AA males in order to reduce the disparities in cancer outcomes.

Summary: This study aimed to establish a state-wide biobank of African American prostate cancer survivors in Florida to identify biological bases for health disparities. African American men diagnosed with prostate cancer between 2013 and 2017 were identified through the State of Florida's cancer registry. Of the eligible and reachable individuals, a low overall consent rate of 10% was observed. Existing challenges limit the consent and participation in biospecimen research.

Summary: Approximately 6400 pregnant women are diagnosed with cancer in the United States each year, and the recent decision by the Supreme Court to overturn the constitutional right to abortion will prevent many of these women from making critical decisions about their medical treatment. Lack of access to safe first-trimester abortions may significantly compromise these patients' cancer outcomes, reducing their chances of living long enough to raise their child in the first place.
