Summary: Postoperative complications are associated with post-surgical pain, and the occurrence of major complications increases the likelihood of patients reporting pain at 30 days and possibly 1 year after surgery.

Summary: The study found no significant difference in short- or long-term pain between patients undergoing anterolateral thoracotomy or median sternotomy. Both groups showed a decrease in persistent postoperative pain incidence between 3 and 6 months without any significant changes at 12 months.

Summary: This study investigated the long-term prevalence, risk factors, and impact on quality of life of persistent postsurgical pain (PPP) following cardiac surgery. Younger age, high acute pain score, remifentanil use, and longer operative time were associated with PPP. Persistent pain negatively impacted the quality of life of patients.

Summary: Identifying factors associated with persistent pain after breast cancer surgery may facilitate risk stratification and individualised management. In this multicenter study, a predictive model was developed from a sample of Asian and American women. The independent risk factors for persistent pain after surgery were found to be age, diabetes, pre-operative pain score at sites other than the breast, previous mastitis, and perceived stress scale.

Summary: This multicenter prospective study investigated the prevalence, risk factors, and medical management of persistent pain symptoms in patients with ICU length of stay >= 48 h. The study found that persistent pain symptoms were frequent in critical illness survivors, but specialized pain management remained infrequent.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis investigated the prevalence and characteristics of persistent postoperative pain (PPP) after thoracic surgery. The results showed that 38.1% of thoracic surgery patients developed PPP, with 40.6% experiencing moderate-to-severe pain and 56.5% requiring opioid analgesics. Therefore, adequate pain treatment and follow-up are needed for patients undergoing thoracic surgery.

Summary: This study aims to compare patient-reported outcomes after thoracoscopic segmentectomy and lobectomy for early-stage lung cancer. A total of 788 newly diagnosed patients will be included in this multicentre, prospective cohort study. The study results will provide guidance for surgical selection and improve patients' quality of life.

Summary: Persistent postoperative opioid use after cardiac surgery affects at least one in 20 patients. Risk factors such as female sex, smoking, alcohol use, congestive cardiac failure, diabetes mellitus, chronic lung disease, chronic kidney disease, and length of hospital stay are associated with this phenomenon.

Summary: This study aims to identify specific genetic risk factors for the development of acute and chronic postoperative pain, in order to construct a prediction model for personalized postoperative pain management. The study will collect data on genetic, demographic, and clinical risk factors through questionnaires, blood samples, and electronic health records, and will use genome-wide association analysis and multivariable regression to identify the factors associated with postoperative pain. The results of this study will contribute to personalized postoperative pain management.

Summary: Patients continue to use opioids after spine surgery for reasons beyond surgery-related pain. Withdrawal symptoms are common within the first 3 months post-surgery and are linked to failure to discontinue opioid treatment. Half of the patients seek healthcare for pain-related issues in the first 3 months after discharge.

Summary: This study found that patients continue to use opioids after spine surgery not only for surgery-related pain, but also for other reasons. Withdrawal symptoms were experienced by about one-third of patients in the first three months post-surgery, and were associated with failure to discontinue opioid treatment. Half of the patients contacted healthcare providers within the first three months after discharge seeking pain-related care.

Summary: This study investigated the incidence and risk factors for postoperative falls in foot and ankle surgery. It found a high incidence of falls in the first 6 weeks after surgery, and baseline antidepressant use and higher 2-week pain scores were identified as independent risk factors for postoperative falls.

Summary: Preoperative lower back pain intensity is associated with the severity of postoperative pain after gynecologic laparoscopy. It can be used as a predictor for moderate-to-severe postoperative pain, with patients rated three or above experiencing more severe pain and requiring higher opioid use after surgery.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate pain trajectories after posterolateral and axillary thoracotomies from postoperative days 0-5 and identify potential factors related to the worst trajectory. The results revealed four pain trajectories, with preoperative pain being a major factor for the worst trajectory of early postoperative pain.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the predictive factors of acute pain after open radical gastrectomy (OG) for gastric cancer patients. The results showed that total gastrectomy, AJCC TNM stage, BMI, distant metastasis, and intraoperative transfusion were significant predictive factors for acute pain after OG in gastric cancer patients.
