Statin use and discontinuation in Danes age 70 and older: a nationwide drug utilisation study

Wade Thompson, Dorte Ejg Jarbol, Jesper Bo Nielsen, Peter Haastrup, Anton Pottegard

Summary: The study found that approximately one in three Danes aged 70 and older were taking statins in 2016. The prevalence of statin use was generally stable in the 70 to 79 age group, but increased in the 80 and older age group. Around 19% of long-term statin users discontinued therapy between 2014 and 2016, with increasing age being the strongest predictor of statin discontinuation.

Patient Preferences for Discussing Life Expectancy: a Systematic Review

Emma Bjork, Wade Thompson, Jesper Ryg, Ove Gaardboe, Trine Lembrecht Jorgensen, Carina Lundby

Summary: Most patients are willing to discuss life expectancy, yet a considerable proportion is not. The study findings reveal significant heterogeneity and variability in preferences for discussing life expectancy, making it challenging to identify clear predictors. Variability in preferences may be influenced by age, disease, and cultural differences, underscoring the importance of clinicians taking individual patient preferences into consideration when initiating discussions about life expectancy.

Methods for evaluating the benefit and harms of deprescribing in observational research using routinely collected data

Frank Moriarty, Wade Thompson, Fiona Boland

Summary: Deprescribing is a planned and supervised process of reducing or stopping medication that may be harmful or no longer beneficial. Challenges in deprescribing research include limited evidence, fear among healthcare professionals, and the need for guidance. Various methods such as target trial emulation and active comparator new user design can be applied to strengthen observational studies in deprescribing, but may be more suitable for specific scenarios where randomized controlled trials are less feasible.

Development and validation of search filters to identify articles on deprescribing in Medline and Embase

Thomas Morel, Jerome Nguyen-Soenen, Wade Thompson, Jean-Pascal Fournier

Summary: This study developed and validated search filters for identifying articles on deprescribing. The filters showed high sensitivity in both Medline and Embase databases, making them useful for future deprescribing reviews.

Deprescribing: Moving beyond barriers and facilitators

Wade Thompson, Emily Reeve

Summary: Deprescribing is a relatively new field that aims to address the problem of unnecessary polypharmacy among older adults. Early research in this area has focused on identifying barriers and facilitators, but there is a need for further research that builds on existing knowledge and translates it into practical strategies and tools to impact clinical practice.

Factors associated with statin discontinuation near end of life in a Danish primary health care cohort

Anna E. Engell, Lise Bathum, John S. Andersen, Wade Thompson, Bent S. Lind, Henrik L. Jorgensen, Jorgen Nexoe

Summary: The study aimed to describe the rate of discontinuation and factors associated with discontinuation of statin treatment in the 6 months before death. The findings showed that 64% of patients continued statin treatment, while 36% discontinued it. Factors such as age, comorbidity score, and the purpose of statin use were associated with discontinuation.

GP preferences for discussing statin deprescribing: a discrete choice experiment

Wade Thompson, Dorte Jarbol, Jesper Bo Nielsen, Peter Haastrup, Line Bjornskov Pedersen

Summary: This study investigated the preferences of Danish GPs in discussing statin deprescribing. Results showed that GPs prefer brief discussions and have different views on the important topics to discuss. The goals of therapy were perceived as the most important discussion topic.

When does proton pump inhibitor treatment become long term? A scoping review

Peter Fentz Haastrup, Dorte Ejg Jarbol, Wade Thompson, Jane Moller Hansen, Jens Sondergaard, Sanne Rasmussen

Summary: The definition of long-term PPI treatment varied substantially between studies and were seldom rationalized. In a clinical context, the definition may vary depending on the patient's condition. For research purposes, a tailored definition may be necessary depending on the study's objectives. It is recommended to always rationalize the choice of definition.
