Summary: Inherited chromosomally integrated HHV-6 (iciHHV-6) can be transmitted from parent to child and is associated with increased risk of spontaneous abortion, especially in mothers who are iciHHV-6 positive and those who are ≥40 years old at their most recent pregnancy.

Summary: The study found that couples with male partners who used marijuana >= 1 time/week before conception had a higher risk of spontaneous abortion compared to couples with male partners who did not use marijuana. This risk was particularly evident for pregnancies that ended in abortion before 8 weeks and among males aged 35 and older.

Summary: The study found disordered maternal iron homeostasis in women who had early spontaneous abortions, with increased serum iron and hepcidin levels, and decreased serum ERFE levels. The elevated serum hepcidin and ERFE ratio (HE ratio) showed potential as a diagnostic marker for identifying adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Summary: The study found that each additional week of alcohol exposure during the first trimester increases the risk of spontaneous abortion, even at low levels of consumption and when excluding binge drinking. Alcohol use during weeks 5 through 10 from last menstrual period was associated with increased spontaneous abortion risk, with risk peaking for use in week 9.

Summary: This study evaluates the association between pre-pregnancy migraine diagnosis and medication use with the risk of spontaneous abortion. The findings suggest that the use of certain migraine medications may increase the risk of spontaneous abortion.

Summary: This study found a negative association between prenatal exposure to antidepressants and motor development in two-year-old children, but no association with cognitive and language development. This association was influenced by maternal prenatal distress, but the effect size was very small.

Summary: The study found that the intake of protein-rich foods before pregnancy was largely unrelated to the risk of spontaneous abortion, with the exception of seafood, which showed different effects on SAB risk in Denmark compared to North America.

Summary: The study found that women with untreated depression during pregnancy had higher intake of unhealthy takeaway food throughout the postpartum period, while higher depressive symptoms in the postpartum were also associated with higher takeaway intake. However, there was no difference in fruit and vegetable intake among the three groups, and intake was highest for all women late in pregnancy and declined in the postpartum period.

Summary: This study aimed to identify the determinants of spontaneous abortion among women survivors of intimate partner violence during pregnancy in Adigrat General Hospital, Northern Ethiopia, in 2020. The study found that 54% of the violence survivors experienced any form of intimate partner violence, compared to 35% in the control group. The results indicated that experiencing any form of intimate partner violence, physical intimate partner violence, and a shorter inter-pregnancy interval were independent factors contributing to spontaneous abortion.

Summary: This study examined the association between receiving pandemic H1N1 (pH1N1) vaccines in consecutive influenza seasons and adverse pregnancy outcomes among vaccine-compliant pregnant military women. The results showed no significant association between receiving pH1N1-containing vaccine during pregnancy and spontaneous abortion or birth defects. Therefore, vaccination against pH1N1 in pregnancy is supported regardless of prior influenza season vaccination history.

Summary: The study examined the association between gestational exposure to antidepressants and the risk of seizures in offspring, finding a 2.3-fold increase in seizure incidence. While the causal relationship was inconclusive, further research is warranted for clinical aspects and fetal neurodevelopment monitoring during antidepressant use in pregnant women. Individualized decision-making is recommended, balancing the risks of untreated maternal depression with the potential consequences of abrupt withdrawal of antidepressants during pregnancy for cases at risk of seizures in offspring.

Summary: High-level toxic metal exposure has become rare in recent years, but it is still unclear whether relatively lower exposure may adversely affect the human reproductive system. The study found that, except for antimony, other toxic metals did not show a significant impact on the risk of spontaneous abortion (SA) at relatively low levels. It is recommended that women planning pregnancy and during early gestation should avoid exposure to these toxic metals to prevent adverse effects.
