Summary: This study found that manipulating the concentration of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in the cultivation medium can significantly enhance the Pb(II) adsorption capacity of green alga by increasing the charges on the cell surface. The presence of functional groups containing C=O, such as carboxyl, plays a major role in this adsorption enhancement process.

Summary: This study investigated the regulation of diacylglycerol acyltransferase 2 gene (NeoDGAT2) in microalgae by analyzing the regulatory sequence RDG, revealing the potential role of MYB transcription factor in controlling TAG biosynthesis. The interaction between MYB transcription factor and MYB-bs may play a crucial role in regulating -N induced expression of NeoDGAT2 and affecting TAG accumulation, making MYB transcription factors a potential target for engineering to increase TAG content for economic viability.

Summary: Green alga Neochloris oleoabundans cultivated in medium of varied phosphate concentration showed effective biosorption capacity for Cu(II) removal from aqueous solutions. The highest biosorption capacity of 180.19 mg-Cu/g-biomass was achieved with biomass grown in medium containing 300 mg/L K2HPO4. The Cu(II) biosorption was fast with equilibrium established within 10 min of contact time, and Cu(II)-induced cell aggregation could facilitate biomass recovery.

Summary: Microalgae, specifically Neochloris oleoabundans, cultivated under autotrophic and mixotrophic conditions, were found to produce whole aqueous extracts with antiviral properties against HCoV-229E. The extracts contained bioactive compounds such as lipids, exo-polysaccharides, phenolics, proteins, and pigments. The study suggests that the inhibitory effect of the extracts is mainly attributed to the combination of proteins, pigments, and phenolics in autotrophic cultures, and proteins, acidic exo-polysaccharides, and lipids in mixotrophic cultures.

Summary: This study tested a new method using melittin peptide to induce cell disruption in N. oleoabundans, resulting in increased lipid recovery. Scanning electron microscopy and confocal images showed that melittin caused extensive cell damage by degrading the cell wall and releasing intracellular material.

Summary: In this study, microalgae (MAG) was used as an environmentally friendly and efficient adsorbent for the removal of crystal violet (CV) and methylene blue (MB) dyes from aqueous solutions. The adsorption process was optimized using a Box-Behnken design (BBD), and the kinetics and isotherm analyses revealed that the adsorption followed the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models. MAG exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 243.0 mg/g for CV and 297.1 mg/g for MB. The thermodynamic parameters indicated that the adsorption of CV and MB dyes onto MAG was spontaneous and endothermic. The adsorption mechanism involved electrostatic forces, n-?? stacking, and H-bonding. Overall, MAG shows promise as an effective adsorbent for removing dyestuffs from industrial effluent.

Summary: Transfersomes are a nanotechnology-based approach to enhance the delivery of bioactive compounds to the skin. However, their properties still need improvement for better application in the pharmaceutical industry and development of topical medicines. This study optimized transfersomes for cutaneous applications by incorporating mixed edge activators with opposing hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) using a Box-Behnken factorial design (BBD) strategy.

Summary: This study investigates the feasibility of developing a buccal film impregnated with paliperidone-loaded nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) and demonstrates its potential as an alternative therapy for the treatment of schizophrenia, with improved bioavailability. The optimized NLC dispersions showed desired characteristics and the developed film exhibited excellent properties. The pharmacokinetics profile in rabbits supports the efficacy of the buccal therapy, showing higher AUC(0-12) and relative bioavailability compared to the control.

Summary: A horizontal thin-layer algal reactor was used to culture oil-rich green alga, Neochloris oleoabundans, with a high cell density. CO2-enriched air and a hollow fiber membrane sparger were used for aeration, allowing for pH control within a narrow range. The optimal nitrate concentration was 345 mg-N/L, resulting in high cell density and biomass concentrations. Intermittent mixing was found to save energy and reduce water evaporation, while also producing similar cell growth profile to continuous mixing. The findings suggest that it is technically feasible to cultivate photoautotrophic microalgae with high density using intermittent mixing and no culture circulation, leading to the development of cost-effective algal farming systems.
