Summary: This study evaluates the practice and outcomes of reoperative cardiac surgery via re-sternotomy. It finds that reoperative cardiac surgery is associated with low operative morbidity and mortality at an experienced center. The study also suggests that early and late cardiopulmonary bypass strategies have similar outcomes in the context of an image-guided, team-based strategy.

Summary: The management of antithrombotic therapy after cardiac surgery is not well described. Most physicians use low-molecular-weight heparin, but there is inconsistency in its use. Some physicians are concerned about the increased risk of bleeding and the complex management of low-molecular-weight heparin.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the use of benzodiazepines during cardiac surgeries and identify variations across institutions and attending anaesthesiology clinicians. The results showed that two-thirds of the variation in benzodiazepine administration were attributable to institutions and clinicians, indicating the need for evidence-based and patient-centered guidelines for benzodiazepine use.

Summary: The temperature and moisture distribution over the Indian subcontinent are changing with the accelerated global temperature rise, resulting in shifting wet/dry and warm/cold zones within India. The differential warming rate over land and surrounding ocean determine intricate dynamics of the Indian summer monsoon, making the region more susceptible towards drought and flood events.

Summary: This study retrospectively evaluated the variation and influencing factors of intraoperative opioid administration from 2012 to 2016 in different institutions. The results showed a decrease in the use of opioids during surgery over time, with variations in dose among different genders and procedure types. Furthermore, there was substantial variability in opioid use between institutions even when adjusting for multiple variables.

Summary: There is growing concern about the potential negative effects of deepfake technology, but also recognition of its creative applications. In a recent study, participants were shown deepfake videos of fictional movie remakes and it was found that a significant number of them had false memories and even believed the deepfake remake was better than the original film. However, the study also revealed that simple text descriptions were equally capable of distorting memory as deepfakes. Qualitative data indicated participants' discomfort with deepfake recasting due to concerns about artistic integrity, disruption of social experiences, and uneasiness over the control and options provided by this technology.

Summary: This systematic review examines the impact of resource allocation on cardiac surgery programs and patient outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic. The reallocation of resources away from elective surgeries resulted in longer wait times, increased rates of urgent surgeries, and negative impacts on patient outcomes.

Summary: Turner syndrome is a rare genetic condition in females characterized by the absence or partial absence of the second sex chromosome, resulting in various clinical features such as short stature, ovarian dysgenesis, delayed puberty and infertility, congenital malformations, endocrine disorders, and neurocognitive deficits. A multidisciplinary approach is necessary for the management of TS, and recent clinical advances and genomic discoveries in this field are reviewed and discussed.

Summary: There have been advances in the treatment of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) in the past two decades, leading to improved survival for patients. This study evaluated survival trends in PDAC patients in the United States and found that both surgical and non-surgical treatments have resulted in increased median survival over time. The analysis also showed that the risk of death decreased with each year for both surgical and non-surgical patients.

Summary: Over the past 10 years, pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) has become the preferred approach for repairing uncomplicated rhegmatogenous retinal detachments (RRD), driven by the preferences of younger surgeons. However, scleral buckling (SB) and PPV/SB have demonstrated superior long-term single surgery anatomic success (SSAS) compared to PPV. Therefore, SB and PPV/SB should be considered more frequently when determining the appropriate repair strategy for uncomplicated RRD.

Summary: A total of 347 patients who underwent dissection for melanoma metastases to the groin were reviewed, and it was found that there were no significant differences in complications, length of stay, lymphedema, recurrence, cancer-specific survival, or overall survival between inguinal and ilioinguinal dissections. Ilioinguinal dissection is a safe and well-tolerated procedure with appropriate indications for deep node positivity rates. Randomized data are needed to determine the impact of ilioinguinal dissection on regional control and survival.
