The SBBrasil 2010 Project (SBB10) was designed as a nationwide oral health epidemiological survey within a health surveillance strategy. This article discusses methodological aspects of the SBB10 Project that can potentially help expand and develop knowledge in the health field. This was a nationwide survey with stratified multi-stage cluster sampling. The sample domains were 27 State capitals and 150 rural municipalities (counties) from the country's five major geographic regions. The sampling units were census tracts and households for the State capitals and municipalities, census tracts, and households for the rural areas. Thirty census tracts were selected in the State capitals and 30 municipalities in the countryside. The precision considered the demographic domains grouped by density of the overall population and the internal variability of oral health indices. The study evaluated dental caries, periodontal disease, malocclusion, fluorosis, tooth loss, and dental trauma in five age groups (5, 12, 15-19, 35-44, and 65-74 years).

Social Mobility and Tooth Loss: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

R. K. Celeste, A. Darin-Mattsson, C. Lennartsson, S. Listl, M. A. Peres, J. Fritzell

Summary: This study reviewed the association between life course social mobility and tooth loss among middle-aged and older individuals. Summary: This study aimed to assess the socioeconomic disparities in untreated dental caries in early childhood in three birth cohorts in Southern Brazil. The results showed that the prevalence of untreated dental caries was higher among socioeconomically deprived children, with family income and maternal education level being positively associated with the risk of untreated dental caries.

Quality of education and adolescents' oral health-related behaviours: a multilevel analysis

N. G. Nery, L. M. R. Jordao, M. H. N. G. de Abreu, M. C. M. Freire

Summary: The quality of education in cities is associated with unhealthy oral health-related behaviors among adolescent students, particularly low toothbrushing frequency and high sweets consumption. Therefore, schools need to implement appropriate health promotion strategies and provide high-quality education.

Reliability analysis using the in-lux examination method for dental indices in adolescents for use in epidemiological studies

Rafaela da Silveira Pinto, Mario Vianna Vettore, Mauro Henrique Guimaraes Nogueira de Abreu, Andrea Clemente Palmier, Rosa Nubia Vieira de Moura, Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli

Summary: This study evaluates the reliability of examiners in reproducing dental indices using in-lux examination method. The results show that the in-lux examination method can replace the in vivo examination method and is more feasible when clinical calibration is unrealistic and involving a large number of examiners.

Lorrany Gabriela Rodrigues, Aline Araujo Sampaio, Carlos Antonio Gomes da Cruz, Mario Vianna Vettore, Raquel Conceicao Ferreira

Summary: This study systematically reviewed instruments developed by nondental professionals to assess the oral health of older adults in LTCF and evaluated their measurement properties. The results showed that some instruments had acceptable validity and reliability, but with low quality of evidence.

Patterns of unhealthy behaviours during adolescence and subsequent anxiety and depression in adulthood: a prospective register linkage study of the HUNT survey and health registries

Annette Lovheim Kleppang, Mario Vianna Vettore, Ingeborg Hartz, Siri Havas Haugland, Tonje Holte Stea

Summary: This study aimed to identify patterns of health-related behaviors in adolescence and their association with the subsequent diagnoses and/or drug treatment for anxiety and/or depression in adulthood. The findings suggest that patterns of unhealthy behaviors during adolescence are partially associated with an increased risk of anxiety and depression in adulthood.

Investigating the causal effect of cognition on the self-reported loss of functional dentition using marginal structural models: The Panel on Health and Ageing of Singaporean Elderly study

Marco A. Peres, Karen G. Peres, Angelique Chan, Bei Wu, Murthy Mittinty

Summary: The study aimed to assess the effect of cognition on the loss of functional dentition. Data from the Panel on Health and Ageing of Singaporean Elderly study were analyzed over a 6-year period. The results showed that the proportion of participants with loss of functional dentition increased from 74.6% to 89.9%. However, the association between cognition and functional dentition among the elderly in Singapore remains uncertain after accounting for confounding factors.

The impact of socio-environmental, individual and biologic factors on oral health-related quality of life among preschool children: a cohort study with 3-year follow-up

Izabella Barbosa Fernandes, Joana Ramos-Jorge, Priscila Seixas Mourao, Angelica Beatriz Rodrigues, Valeria Silveira Coelho, Mario Vianna Vettore, Maria Leticia Ramos-Jorge

Summary: This study examined the factors influencing the deterioration and severe deterioration of oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) among preschoolers and their families. It found that extensive tooth decay and failure to undergo recommended dental treatment were associated with worsening OHRQoL over a three-year period. An increase in the number of children in the household was also linked to severe worsening of OHRQoL. These findings highlight the importance of early dental care and maintaining good oral health in preschool-aged children.

Dewi L. I. Nasution, Michiko Furuta, Huihua Li, Myrna Nurlatifah Zakaria, Toru Takeshita, Marco A. Peres, Yoshihisa Yamashita

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the bidirectional temporal relationship between periodontal condition and glycaemic status. The results showed that HbA1c at baseline had a significant effect on mean PPD at follow-up, while fasting glucose had a marginal effect on mean PPD. However, there was no effect of mean PPD or CAL at baseline on fasting glucose or HbA1c at follow-up.

Liliane Ramos Costa, Mario Vianna Vettore, Larissa Neves Quadros, Janete Maria Rebelo Vieira, Ana Paula Correa de Queiroz Herkrath, Adriana Correa de Querioz, Juliana Vianna Pereira, Fernando Jose Herkrath, Maria Augusta Bessa Rebelo

Summary: This study examines the relationships between socio-economic status, psychosocial factors, health-related behaviors and the incidence of dental caries among 12-year-old schoolchildren living in deprived communities in Manaus, Brazil. The findings suggest that sugar consumption and sedentary behavior directly predict the incidence of dental caries. Higher socio-economic status is associated with lower sugar consumption and higher sedentary behavior. Higher social support directly predicts lower sugar consumption. Lower socio-economic status and lower social support indirectly predict dental caries incidence through sugar consumption and sedentary behavior.
