In recent years, manufacturing companies and service providers have moved towards offering customer-specific problem solutions. These integrated bundles usually consist of hardware, software, and service components and are called product service systems (PSS) or hybrid products. Since the success of the resulting solution depends on the understanding of all requirements, requirements engineering (RE) has become a key factor. The article analyzes the state of the art of RE for PSS based on an extensive literature review in the domains of product-, software, and service engineering. For this, criteria are derived from the characteristics of PSS and from the task area of RE in the life cycle of PSS. Based on these criteria we analyze the most established RE approaches for their suitability for PSS. An important finding is that integrated/interdisciplinary approaches for RE are missing. Moreover, the maturity of RE approaches in the three domains varies significantly. All analyzed approaches heavily rely on concepts and solution characteristics of their own domain so that a transfer to other domains is hardly possible. This literature review lays the foundation for successful RE for PSS and especially for future research aiming at combining and integrating RE approaches and models of product-, software-, and service engineering. Such requirement models could connect concepts of single domains and enable an integrated and seamless RE for PSS.

Pathways to Digital Service Innovation: The Role of Digital Transformation Strategies in Established Organizations

David Soto Setzke, Tobias Riasanow, Markus Boehm, Helmut Krcmar

Summary: Digital technologies are transforming the way organizations design services, and digital transformation strategies are used to transition from product-centric to service-centric business models. However, little is known about the configurations of these strategies that lead to successful digital service innovation (DSI). This study identifies different configurations of digital transformation strategies that contribute to both successful and unsuccessful DSI. The threat of digital disruption negatively impacts innovation activities, strategic partnerships are important for organizations facing digital disruption, and the involvement of C-level executives is crucial for successful DSI.

Gamifying Online Training in Management Education to Support Emotional Engagement and Problem-solving Skills

Sofia Marlena Schoebel, Andreas Janson, Jan Marco Leimeister

Summary: Online training plays a significant role in management learning, but learners often face stress and decreased motivation in online environments. To enhance motivation and emotional engagement, gamification elements can be used, although they do not necessarily lead to improved learning outcomes. This study demonstrates that points and badges do not directly improve problem-solving skills, but instead influence them through emotional engagement. Additionally, satisfaction with the gamification learning process positively correlates with emotional engagement. Educators should consider student engagement and learning environment design when creating online training programs.

Lawfulness by design - development and evaluation of lawful design patterns to consider legal requirements

Ernestine Dickhaut, Andreas Janson, Matthias Soellner, Jan Marco Leimeister

Summary: The pressure to develop lawful IT artefacts has increased due to new political objectives, emerging regulatory regimes, and higher penalties for violations. Designing IT artefacts lawfully from the beginning is a more attractive approach, but it is challenging due to the technology-neutral nature of the law and the costly communication between legal experts and developers. One possible solution is to use design patterns that convey legal design knowledge and support developers in determining appropriate design options. A framework for lawful design patterns is developed and demonstrated using the example of AI-based assistants and GDPR regulation.

Stairway to heaven or highway to hell: A model for assessing cognitive automation use cases

Christian Engel, Edona Elshan, Philipp Ebel, Jan M. Leimeister

Summary: Cognitive automation (CA) extends rule-based business process automation by targeting cognitive knowledge and service work. CA offers organizations the opportunity to automate tasks and processes that were previously unimaginable, providing a significant competitive advantage. However, organizations face challenges in determining the potential for CA in different use cases, leading to low adoption and high project failure rates. To address this, a model for assessing use cases' suitability for CA is proposed, considering cognition, data, relationship, and transparency requirements. The model's generalizability is validated through internal and external evaluations in different industries.
