Infections due to Staphylococcus aureus have become increasingly common among burn patients. The antibiotic resistance profile of S. aureus isolates and inducible resistance against clindamycin were investigated in this study. The presence of mecA gene, mupA gene and macrolide resistance genes were detected using PCR and multiplex-PCR. The resistance rate to methicillin, erythromycin and mupirocin were 58.5%, 58% and 40%, respectively. The prevalence of constitutive and inducible resistance among macrolide resistant isolates was 75% and 25%, respectively. Ninety five percent of the isolates were positive for one or more erm genes. The most common genes were ermA (75%), ermC (72%) and ermB (69%), respectively. The ermA gene predominated in the strains with the inducible phenotype, while ermC was more common in the isolates with the constitutive phenotype. The msrA gene was only found in one MRSA isolate with the constitutive phenotype. A total of 27 isolates (25%) carried the mupA gene. All the mupirocin resistant isolates and almost all the erythromycin resistant isolates were also resistant against methicillin which may indicate an outbreak of MRSA isolates with high-level mupirocin and erythromycin resistance in the burn unit assessed. Antimicrobial resistance pattern, virulence determinants and molecular analysis of carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae isolated from clinical samples in Iran

Mahsa Ghamari, Reza Beigverdi, Fereshteh Jabalameli, Mohammad Emaneini

Summary: In this study, the molecular characteristics, antibiotic resistance patterns, and distribution of virulence factors in Carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) isolated from clinical specimens were characterized. The results showed that CRKP infections have been associated with different genotypes and that the carbapenemase type (OXA-48) and AME gene (aac6'-Ib) were widely distributed in CRKP isolates in the hospital. It is recommended to continue compliance with existing phenotypes and genotypes, and strict enforcement of infection control guidelines to prevent and disseminate these strains.

Distribution and Characteristics of Bacteria Isolated from Cystic Fibrosis Patients with Pulmonary Exacerbation

Soroor Erfanimanesh, Mohammad Emaneini, Mohammad Reza Modaresi, Mohammad Mehdi Feizabadi, Shahnaz Halimi, Reza Beigverdi, Vajiheh Sadat Nikbin, Fereshteh Jabalameli

Summary: This study investigated the bacterial profile and antibiotic resistance pattern in respiratory specimens from cystic fibrosis patients. Results showed that Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were the most prevalent bacterial isolates, with some strains showing resistance to multiple antibiotics. The study also found that S. aureus was more common in younger patients, while mucoid P. aeruginosa showed higher prevalence in older individuals.

Underwater Arc Discharge Treatment Using a High-Voltage Arc-Robust Supply

Alireza Bagheri, Hossein Iman-Eini, Mohammad Emaneini

Summary: In this article, a high-voltage underwater arc discharge system is proposed for the inactivation of E. coli bacteria. The system consists of a high-voltage capacitor charger and a discharge circuit, which are designed to protect and ensure stable operation of the arc discharge. By using a two-step spark gap scheme and an ultrafast high-voltage trigger circuit, the system can operate independently of water conductivity. The experimental results validate the effectiveness of the proposed system in achieving complete inactivation of E. coli bacteria in a short treatment time.

Molecular Characteristics of Staphylococcus aureus Strains Isolated from Nasal Cavity and Wound Infections Among Diabetic Patients

Elahe Taki, Fereshteh Jabalameli, Mohammad Reza Mohajeri Tehrani, Mohammad Mehdi Feizabadi, Shahnaz Halimi, Mahnaz Sanjari, Mohammad Reza Amini, Reza Beigverdi, Mohammad Emaneini

Summary: This study aimed to determine the genetic diversity and antibiotic resistance profile of Staphylococcus aureus isolates in nasal and wound samples from diabetic patients. The findings showed that nasal transmission of S. aureus increased the risk of endogenous infection. Methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) was notably prevalent in nasal specimens, and the most common spa-type in both nasal and wound samples was t14870.

Global prevalence and antibiotic resistance in clinical isolates of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Maryam Banar, Azin Sattari-Maraji, Ghazal Bayatinejad, Elahe Ebrahimi, Leila Jabalameli, Reza Beigverdi, Mohammad Emaneini, Fereshteh Jabalameli

Summary: This study conducted a comprehensive analysis of the global prevalence and antibiotic resistance of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. The results showed an increasing trend in the prevalence of S. maltophilia infections, with higher prevalence in the Western Pacific Region and lower prevalence in the American regions. The analysis of antibiotic resistance revealed high resistance to cefuroxime and low resistance to minocycline. Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole was still considered effective for treating S. maltophilia infections.

Identification of major sequence types among aminoglycoside resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis strains isolated from clinical samples

Samaneh Bourbour, Reza Beigverdi, Maryam Beheshti, Fereshteh Jabalameli, Mohammad Emaneini

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and molecular characteristics of AME genes in aminoglycoside-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis strains isolated from clinical specimens in Iran. The results showed that the main mechanism of aminoglycoside resistance was the presence of aac(6')-Ie-aph(2 '')-Ia and aph(3') IIIa genes, and the dominant clones were ST239 and ST2. This information is critical for clinicians and healthcare workers to make appropriate treatment and infection control decisions.

Estimation of gestational age using ultrasonography in Baluchi sheep

Masoud Saeedipanah Ardakani, Babak Khoramian Toosi, Mohammad Azizzadeh, Masoud Rajabioun

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the correlation between fetal parameters measured by ultrasonography and fetal age in Baluchi sheep for developing a formula to estimate fetal age. The results showed that most parameters had a significant correlation with fetal age, with biparietal diameter, femural length, and fetal heart rate showing the highest correlation. Gestation Sac diameter had a low correlation with fetal age, and placentome diameter had a significant non-linear correlation. The study recommended using occipito-snout diameter as the best parameter for estimating gestational age in Baluchi sheep between days 36-109.

Multiple-locus variable-number tandem repeat analysis for genotyping of erythromycin-resistant group B streptococci in Iran

Mahsa Ghamari, Fereshteh Jabalameli, Mohammad Emaneini, Reza Beigverdi

Summary: This study investigated the resistance of Group B Streptococcus (GBS) to macrolide antibiotics in Tehran, Iran, and analyzed the genetic relationships among resistant strains. The results showed that the most common antimicrobial resistance gene in the resistant strains was tetM, and there was diversity among the resistant strains. Therefore, careful usage of macrolide antibiotics, continuous surveillance, and infection control measures are necessary.
