We propose a site-classification scheme based on the predominant period of the site, as determined from the average horizontal-to-vertical (H/V) spectral ratios of ground motion. Our scheme extends Zhao et al. (2006) classifications by adding two classes, the most important of which is defined by flat H/V ratios with amplitudes less than 2. The proposed classification is investigated by using 5%-damped response spectra from Italian earthquake records. We select a dataset of 602 three-component analog and digital recordings from 120 earthquakes recorded at 214 seismic stations within a hypocentral distance of 200 km. Selected events are in the moment-magnitude range 4.0 <= M-w <= 6.8 and focal depths from a few kilometers to 46 km. We computed H/V ratios for these data and used them to classify each site into one of six classes. We then investigate the impact of this classification scheme on empirical ground-motion prediction equations (GMPEs) by comparing its performance with that of the conventional rock/soil classification. Although the adopted approach results in only a small reduction of the overall standard deviation, the use of H/V spectral ratios in site classification does capture the signature of sites with flat frequency-response, as well as deep and shallow-soil profiles, characterized by long-and short-period resonance, respectively; in addition, the classification scheme is relatively quick and inexpensive, which is an advantage over schemes based on measurements of shear-wave velocity.

Effects of Nonlinear Soil Behavior on Kappa (κ): Observations from the KiK-Net Database

Chunyang Ji, Ashly Cabas, Luis Fabian Bonilla, Celine Gelis

Summary: Soil nonlinear behavior in soft sedimentary deposits during strong ground shaking can lead to catastrophic damage to civil infrastructure. The study investigates the behavior of spectral decay parameter kappa in non-linear regime, finding influences of soil nonlinearity on kappa estimates. Ground motion classification, in situ deformation proxies, and ground shaking intensity affect the applicability of kappa(0) model.

Effects of 2-D random velocity perturbations on 2-D SH short-period ground motion simulations in the basin of Nice, France

Summary: This study examines the impact of small-scale velocity fluctuations on seismic response by modeling 2-D SH wave propagation in a sedimentary basin. The research finds that the amplitude of fluctuations has a greater effect on ground motion variability than the correlation length, with ground motion in different stochastic models being locally amplified or deamplified compared to a reference model. Additionally, the study highlights the importance of understanding site properties at different scales for proper seismic hazard assessment.

Profiling the Quito basin (Ecuador) using seismic ambient noise

Summary: Quito, the capital of Ecuador, is at high seismic risk due to its proximity to seismic zones. A study conducted in the city investigated the seismic response of an intermontane basin. Differences in the basin's structure between its northern and southern parts were found to explain the observed low-frequency seismic amplification during a previous earthquake.

Kathmandu Basin as a local modulator of seismic waves: 2-D modelling of non-linear site response under obliquely incident waves

Elif Oral, Peyman Ayoubi, Jean Paul Ampuero, Domniki Asimaki, Luis Fabian Bonilla

Summary: The 2015 Gorkha earthquake in Nepal revealed the seismic behavior of the Kathmandu basin, which amplifies low frequency ground motion but reduces high frequency motion. However, waves with large incidence angles can still amplify high frequency ground motion. The findings of this study can support resilience practices in Nepal and guide seismic hazard assessment studies in other regions with similar complexities.

Nonlinear Earthquake Response of Marine Sediments With Distributed Acoustic Sensing

Loic Viens, Luis Fabian Bonilla, Zack J. Spica, Kiwamu Nishida, Tomoaki Yamada, Masanao Shinohara

Summary: This study investigates the response of marine sediments during earthquake ground motions using distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) along a fiber-optic cable offshore the Tohoku region, Japan. By computing AutoCorrelation Functions (ACFs) of the ground motions in different frequency bands, time delays and relative velocity changes (dv/v drops) are detected, indicating the nonlinearity of the soil. The study demonstrates that DAS can provide unprecedented spatial resolution for inferring the dynamic properties of shallow Earth.

Repetitive small seismicity coupled with rainfall can trigger large slope instabilities on metastable volcanic edifices

Summary: Analyzing 10 years of observations at the Piton de la Fournaise volcano, researchers found that long-term swarm-type seismic activity combined with rainfall can cause instability of volcanic structures like flanks and crater walls, with the stability state of the slope affecting the efficiency and time-delay of the dynamic triggering.
