Assessment of adsorptive behaviors and properties of grape pomace-derived biochar as adsorbent for removal of cymoxanil pesticide

Jae-Yoon Yoon, Ji Eun Kim, Hak Jin Song, Kyung Bin Oh, Jeong Wook Jo, Yung-Hun Yang, Sang Hyun Lee, Gwangnam Kang, Hyung Joo Kim, Yong-Keun Choi

Summary: This study evaluated the adsorptive behaviors of grape pomace-derived biochar for the removal of the pesticide cymoxanil. Biochar produced at low pyrolytic temperature showed the highest cymoxanil adsorption capacity at pH 7, attributed to a combination of metal and hydrophilic interactions. The pseudo-second order kinetics and Freundlich isotherm model were found to be the best fit for the adsorption process.

Copperpod Plant Synthesized AgNPs Enhance Cytotoxic and Apoptotic Effect in Cancer Cell Lines

Balashanmugam Pannerselvam, Devasena Thiyagarajan, Annamalai Pazhani, Kalaichelvan Pudupalayam Thangavelu, Hyung Joo Kim, Senthil Kumaran Rangarajulu

Summary: In this study, plant-mediated silver nanoparticles were synthesized using Copperpod plant leaf extracts, which showed significant anti-cancer properties against various cancerous cells. The nanoparticles exhibited cytotoxic effects with IC50 values ranging from 53 to 69 μg/mL, and apoptosis was induced in cancer cells through DNA fragmentation technique.

Performance of CO2 and Fe-modified lignin char on arsenic (V) removal from water

Jin Sun Cha, Seong-Ho Jang, Su Shiung Lam, Hyungjoo Kim, Young-Min Kim, Byong-Hun Jeon, Young-Kwon Park

Summary: Biochar produced from pyrolysis of Kraft lignin, modified with CO2 and impregnated with FeOx, showed improved physicochemical properties and arsenic (V) adsorption performance. Among the tested biochars, FeOx-LC-800 displayed the highest adsorption efficiency for arsenic (V) due to its highest Fe-O intensity and large surface area. The Langmuir adsorption model was suitable for fitting the adsorption curve, with a calculated theoretical equilibrium adsorption amount (q(e)) of 6.8 mg/g using a pseudo-second-order kinetic model.

Methodology: non-invasive monitoring system based on standing wave ratio for detecting water content variations in plants

Yunjeong Yang, Ji Eun Kim, Hak Jin Song, Eun Bin Lee, Yong-Keun Choi, Jeong Wook Jo, Hyeon Jin Jeon, Ho Hyun Kim, Kwang Jin Kim, Hyung Joo Kim

Summary: The study developed a non-invasive monitoring system using a coil probe to detect water content variation in live plants. The results showed noticeable SWR changes at various frequencies when water was added to experimental plants under drought conditions. Using a fixed frequency, a more comprehensive monitoring of water content variation within a plant and the effect of illumination on water content was achieved.

Gayathri Vijayakumar, Hindhuja Kesavan, Anisha Kannan, Dhanalakshmi Arulanandam, Jeong Hee Kim, Kwang Jin Kim, Hak Jin Song, Hyung Joo Kim, Senthil Kumaran Rangarajulu

Summary: The study focused on the biogenic synthesis of copper nanoparticles using different spice extracts, demonstrating the antibacterial properties of CuNPs formulated with spices. Among the three spice extracts, star anise showed the highest antibacterial activity, suggesting the potential therapeutic applications of CuNPs phyto-formulated with spice extracts.

Treatment of microcystin-LR cyanotoxin contaminated water using Kentucky bluegrass-derived biochar

Hak Jin Song, Ranjit Gurav, Shashi Kant Bhatia, Eun Bin Lee, Hyung Joo Kim, Yung-Hun Yang, Eunsung Kan, Ho Hyun Kim, Sang Hyun Lee, Yong-Keun Choi

Summary: This study investigated the adsorption behaviors of microcystin-LR on pristine biochars derived from various waste biomass, with KB biochar prepared at 750 degrees C showing the highest adsorption capacity. The results suggest that KB biochar could be an effective and cheap adsorbent for removing microcystin-LR from wastewater.

Yong-Keun Choi, Hak-Jin Song, Jeong-Wook Jo, Seong-Won Bang, Byung-Hoon Park, Ho-Hyun Kim, Kwang-Jin Kim, Na-Ra Jeong, Jeong-Hee Kim, Hyung-Joo Kim

Summary: This study investigated the impact of watering, drought, and illumination conditions on PM2.5 removal in a plant-based biofilter system. The findings suggest that under drought with constant light condition, the highest PM2.5 removal efficiency and leaf characteristics changes were observed.

Adsorptive Behavior of Cu2+ and Benzene in Single and Binary Solutions onto Alginate Composite Hydrogel Beads Containing Pitch Pine-Based Biochar

Saerom Park, Jeong Woo Lee, Ji Eun Kim, Gwangnam Kang, Hyung Joo Kim, Yong-Keun Choi, Sang Hyun Lee

Summary: Alginate/biochar hydrogel beads were prepared and used for the removal of Cu2+ and benzene from wastewater. The results showed that the adsorption capacities for Cu2+ and benzene were improved with increasing alginate and biochar content. The adsorption behavior of the hydrogel beads was similar in the concurrent system compared to the single pollutant system. The kinetics and isotherm studies followed the pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir model. In addition, the hydrogel beads exhibited high reusability.

Submerged leaves of live indoor foliage plants adsorb H1N1 influenza virus from suspension

Hak Jin Song, Sung Woo Yang, Jeong Wook Jo, Yong-Keun Choi, Im-Soon Lee, Byung Uk Lee, Sang Hyun Lee, Ho Hyun Kim, Kwang Jin Kim, Hyung Joo Kim

Summary: The control of indoor particles using plants has become an area of interest due to global air pollution and the spread of pandemic-causing viruses. However, the interaction between human pathogenic viruses (HPVs) and live plants has not been extensively studied due to difficulties in detecting small amounts of infectious viruses and the lack of suitable examination methods. This study examined the effect of submerged leaves of live plants on HPVs in water, with promising results showing a decrease in virus concentrations within 72 hours.
