Recently, Eskola and Geritz (Bull. Math. Biol. 69:329-346, 2007) showed that several discrete-time population models can be derived mechanistically within a single ecological framework by varying the within-season patterns of reproduction and inter-individual aggression. However, these models do not have the Allee effect. In this paper, we modify the original modelling framework by adding different mate finding processes, and thus derive mechanistically several population models with the Allee effect.

Environmental dimensionality determines species coexistence

Kalle Parvinen, Johan A. J. Metz, Ulf Dieckmann

Summary: According to the competitive-exclusion principle, the number of regulating variables describing a community dynamics is an upper bound on the number of species that can coexist at equilibrium. When studying which species can invade a community, it is enough to know the sign of each species' long-term growth rate. The environmental dimension is the ultimate generalization of the traditional notions of the number of regulating variables or limiting factors.

Tumor microenvironment as a metapopulation model: The effects of angiogenesis, emigration and treatment modalities

Anni S. Halkola, Tero Aittokallio, Kalle Parvinen

Summary: This study models the tumor microenvironment as a metapopulation to investigate the dynamics of cancer development at a single-cell level. The research reveals that angiogenesis promotes cancer cell growth, while anti-angiogenic treatment reduces the need for cytotoxic therapy. Interestingly, the model predicts that treatment resistance might become favorable to cancer cells when the anti-angiogenic treatment is intensive enough.

Evolution of dispersal under spatio-temporal heterogeneity

Kalle Parvinen, Hisashi Ohtsuki, Joe Yuichiro Wakano

Summary: Theoretical studies have shown that environmental heterogeneity and temporal heterogeneity can both impact the evolution of dispersal. In this study, the authors generalize previous models and find richer dynamics, including bistable evolutionary dynamics. They also examine the evolution of conditional dispersal strategy and find that the ability to use patch quality information is important. The study highlights the importance of considering patch quality information in the evolution of dispersal.
