Laurencia marilzae Gil-Rodriguez, Senties & MT Fujii is recorded for the first time for the tropical western Atlantic Ocean, occurring in Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo, Mexican Caribbean. The specimens were collected in November 2008 and June 2009, growing epilithically in the lower intertidal zone on moderately exposed rocky shores. This species is characterized by its distinctive yellow-orange color in the natural environment, four pericentral cells per vegetative axial segment, the presence of secondary pit-connections between adjacent cortical cells, which are markedly projecting at the apices, and by the presence of one corp en cerise per cell in all cells of the thallus: cortical, medullary, including pericentral and axial cells, and trichoblasts. Morphological similarities and molecular data support the determination of this material as L. marilzae. The present study expands the geographical distribution of L. marilzae to the Caribbean Sea in the tropical Western Atlantic Ocean.

Comparison of the diversity and biomass of beach-cast seaweeds from NE and SE Brazil

Maria Irisvalda Leal Gondim Cavalcanti, Patricia Maria Gonzalez Sanchez, Mutue Toyota Fujii

Summary: This study compared the diversity, coverage, and biomass of beached seaweeds on the north-eastern and south-eastern coasts of Brazil. The results showed that while the north-eastern coast had higher species richness, the south-eastern coast exhibited higher coverage and biomass. The frequency and distribution of beached seaweeds varied significantly across beaches in Brazil, providing insights into their biodiversity and biomass and their potential economic use in the future.

Thermal tolerance of Hypnea pseudomusciformis ecotypes (Cystocloniaceae, Rhodophyta) related to different floristic provinces along the Brazilian coast

Fabio Nauer, Mariana Cabral Oliveira, Estela Maria Plastino, Nair Sumie Yokoya, Mutue Toyota Fujii

Summary: The effects of temperature on physiological processes in Hypnea pseudomusciformis were studied. Different ecotypes displayed decreased physiological performance at 32 degrees C. The wide thermal optimum of this species may explain its widespread distribution along the Brazilian coast.

MOLECULAR ASSESSMENT OF THE SPECIES OF GRACILARIACEAE (GRACILARIALES, RHODOPHYTA) FROM THE YUCATAN PENINSULA, MEXICO, INCLUDING TWO NEW RECORDS FOR THE MEXICAN ATLANTIC

Martha Vilchis, Kurt M. Dreckmann, Oscar E. Hernandez, Carlos A. Palma Ortiz, Maria Luisa Nunez Resendiz, Abel Senties

Summary: This study genetically identified 10 species of Gracilariaceae in the Yucatan Peninsula and discovered 2 new records for the Mexican Atlantic. The molecular assessment proved to be a useful tool for evaluating the diversity of Gracilariaceae species.

Morphometric analysis of five species of the Gracilaria mammillaris complex (Gracilariaceae, Rhodophyta) in the Mexican Atlantic

Martha Isabel Vilchis, Kurt M. Dreckmann, Abel Senties

Summary: This study used morphometric analysis to determine the existence of characters that distinguish five species of the Gracilaria mammillaris complex in the Mexican Atlantic. The results showed that only Gracilaria curtissiae differs significantly from the other species in the complex. The study suggests that an ongoing speciation process may be responsible for the lack of distinguishable morphological traits in most of the studied species.

PHYLOGEOGRAPHY OF COLPOMENIA SINUOSA (ECTOCARPALES, PHAEOPHYCEAE) ALONG THE BRAZILIAN COAST

Nuno Tavares Martins, Valeria Cassano, Carlos Frederico Deluqui Gurgel

Summary: A genetic study was conducted on the C. sinuosa populations in Brazil, revealing two genetically distinct population groups (north vs. south). The southern populations had lower genetic diversity, suggesting past bottlenecks followed by recent colonization from northern populations.

Digenea nana sp. nov. (Rhodomelaceae, Rhodophyta), a new turf-forming, coral reef species from the Western Tropical Atlantic

Luanda Pereira Soares, Pilar Diaz-Tapia, Alain Duran, Mutue Toyota Fujii, Ligia Collado-Vides

Summary: The addition of molecular data to taxonomic studies has led to the discovery of a new turf-forming species, which was previously considered widely distributed but is actually a complex of several distinct species. This highlights the importance of integrating molecular and morpho-anatomical studies to reveal new taxa.

Taxonomic changes in the Lomentariaceae (Rhodymeniales, Rhodophyta): Yendoa gen. nov. and Ceratodictyon sanctae-crucis sp. nov.

Cibele Conceicao dos Santos, Jose Marcos de Castro Nunes, Gabriel do Nascimento Santos, Edilene Maria dos Santos Pestana, Valeria Cassano, Goia de Mattos Lyra

Summary: This study conducted molecular, genetic, and morphological analyses of Lomentariaceae, resulting in the discovery of a new species, Ceratodictyon sanctae-crucis sp. nov., and the proposal of a new genus, Yendoa gen. nov., within Lomentariaceae. The study also revealed that Lomentariaceae now consists only of monophyletic genera, providing a more coherent taxonomic framework for the family.

Ultrastructural characterization of Minutocellus polymorphus (Cymatosiraceae, Bacillariophyta) and first record from the Eastern Pacific

Sinuhe Hernandez-Marquez, Maria Eugenia Zamudio-Resendiz, Maria Luisa Nunez-Resendiz, Alexis Escarcega-Bata, Abel Senties

Summary: The diatom Minutocellus polymorphus is a widely studied species that is an ideal model for toxicity tests due to its rapid growth. Although its gross morphology has been extensively described, the ultrastructural characters associated with its importance are unknown. Through a collection made in Acapulco Bay, Guerrero, Mexico, cells morphologically identical to M. polymorphus were isolated, and a first description of the genus' ultrastructure was provided through cultures and observations in a transmission electron microscope. Further detailed studies are needed to increase knowledge about the ultrastructure of diatoms on the Mexican Pacific coasts where they are previously unknown.

Summary: This study identified genetically differentiated groups within Gelidiella acerosa using genetic sequence data, and classified the Atlantic group as an independent species of the cryptic complex. Gelidiella papillosa sp. nov. is supported only by its genetic independence and allopatric distribution.
