The lichen flora of southeast Alaska has been explored for over 100 years, but remains poorly known In the first survey of its kind from the region, we report 766 taxa of lichens and lichenicolous fungi from the Klondike Gold Rush National Historic Park Coming from a park only 53 km(2) in size, this represents one of the largest numbers of lichenized and lichenicolous fungi per unit area ever reported and the largest number ever reported from any United States National Park of any size One lichen genus, four lichen species and one species of lichenicolous fungus are described as new to science Steineropsis alaskana gen et sp nov (Peltigerales), Coccotrema hahriae and Pertusaria mccroryae (both Pertusariales), Stereocaulon klondikense (Lecanorales) and Corticifraga scrobiculatae (Lecanoromycetes incertae sedis) The new combinations Coccotrema minutum and Nesolechia fusca are made and Parmelia elongata is reduced to synonymy under Hypogymnia duplicata Seventy-five taxa could not be assigned a species name at this time and represent a pool of critical and/or potentially undescribed taxa Thirty-four taxa are new or confirmed for North America, including seventeen lichen taxa, one species of saprophytic Dothideomycetes, and sixteen species of lichenicolous fungi Five taxa of eastern North American distribution are reported for the west for the first time A total of 196 taxa are new for Alaska We report the presence of novel secondary chemical compounds in Bryoria, Cladonia, Hypogymnia and Pertusaria Based on a Chao analysis of single and two-time occurrences we estimate we have captured not more than 83% of the macrolichen and 64% of the microlichen flora, with the total flora likely exceeding 1000 taxa We provide an overview of the lichen inventories with highest species number worldwide and discuss the Klondike in the context of broader patterns in lichen richness Global models of climate change in the coming century are unanimous in predicting greater temperature increases at higher latitudes than at low latitudes We hope that our data will lead to a reconsideration of the potential extent of biodiversity at high latitudes

Neogene speciation and Pleistocene expansion of the genus Pseudephebe (Parmeliaceae, lichenized fungi) involving multiple colonizations of Antarctica

Summary: The study reveals the presence of three partially admixed phylogenetic species within the Pseudephebe genus, with one exhibiting an amphitropical distribution and the others having restricted distributions. The Quaternary glacial cycles strongly influenced their distribution, with a possible Northern Hemisphere origin for one of the species.

Summary: Two lichenicolous fungi growing in different regions show similarities to a previously described species, but can be distinguished through detailed microscopic analysis and molecular markers. Phylogenetic analyses confirmed their separation as a new lineage, for which a new generic name was introduced.

The Role of Photobionts as Drivers of Diversification in an Island Radiation of Lichen-Forming Fungi

Miguel Blazquez, Lucia S. Hernandez-Moreno, Francisco Gasulla, Israel Perez-Vargas, Sergio Perez-Ortega

Summary: Speciation in oceanic islands has been a topic of interest for scientists since the 19th century. Adaptive radiation, which is the process of a lineage giving rise to different species through ecological speciation, is a striking evolutionary phenomenon that can be observed in islands. This study examines the role of the trophic niche in a potential radiation of endemic species from the Macaronesian Region, specifically the Ramalina decipiens group. The research finds that there is no segregation of the trophic niche in this group.

Phylogeography of Ramalina farinacea (Lichenized Fungi, Ascomycota) in the Mediterranean Basin, Europe, and Macaronesia

Patricia Moya, Isaac Garrido-Benavent, Salvador Chiva, Sergio Perez-Ortega, Miguel Blazquez, Tamara Pazos, Tarek Hamel, Leena Myllys, Tor Tonsberg, Per-Anders Esseen, Pedro Carrasco, Eva Barreno

Summary: This study analyzed 120 samples of R. farinacea to unravel its evolutionary history. The results revealed that R. farinacea and its close relatives originated during relatively recent geological times and expanded their range to higher latitudes. However, it remains uncertain whether the species originated exclusively from the Macaronesian archipelagos or also from the Mediterranean Basin.

Isaac Garrido-Benavent, Asuncion de los Rios, Jano Nunez-Zapata, Rudiger Ortiz-Alvarez, Matthias Schultz, Sergio Perez-Ortega

Summary: This study used a comprehensive dataset and genetic analysis to investigate the species boundaries, evolutionary relationships, and geographic distribution of the genus Lichina. The results identified four species in the genus, with L. pygmaea, L. confinis, and the newly described L. canariensis found in the Northern Hemisphere and L. intermedia restricted to the Southern Hemisphere. The genetic diversity of L. intermedia was much higher than the other species, suggesting species-level lineages within this species.

Innovative approaches to accurately assess the effectiveness of biocide-based treatments to fight biodeterioration of Cultural Heritage monuments

Mar Villar-dePablo, Carmen Ascaso, Esther Rodriguez-Perez, Marta Urizal, Jacek Wierzchos, Sergio Perez-Ortega, Asuncion de los Rios

Summary: This study tested the effectiveness of biocide-based treatments on microbial colonization of a dolostone quarry in both short and long-term using a dual analytical strategy. The results showed that the effects of biocides on different microbial taxa varied and were related to their recolonization abilities. The study highlights the importance of combining metabarcoding and microscopy techniques to analyze treatment effects and design effective strategies for preventing biodeterioration.
