Summary: The primary aim of this study was to analyze the influence of selective decontamination of the digestive tract (SDD) on the postoperative infection rate after pancreatic surgery. Results showed that the bacterial load in bile fluid was reduced in patients who received preoperative SDD. However, the administration of SDD did not significantly affect the postoperative infectious complication rate after pancreatic head resections.

Summary: This study aims to characterize the duration of postoperative gastrointestinal recovery across all surgical procedures and determine the associations between factors that may affect this. The outcomes will be disseminated through publication in scientific journals and presentations at conferences.

Summary: The gastrointestinal tract is a continuous channel in the body responsible for digestion and waste elimination. The mechanical behavior of GI tissues is crucial for proper GI function. This article provides a systematic review of biomechanical constitutive models for GI tissues and identifies the need for more advanced modeling techniques.

Summary: Selective Decontamination of the Digestive tract (SDD) effectively eradicates both susceptible and resistant microorganisms from the upper and lower GI tract, with better decontamination rates for susceptible strains in the lower GI tract.

Summary: Foreign body ingestion in the upper digestive tract in adults is a common emergency that may lead to complications if not managed properly. This review analyzed the clinical characteristics of such cases, highlighting the prevalence of male patients, fish bones as the most common foreign body type, and the esophagus as the most affected location. Patients with underlying diseases and other risk factors may have higher complication rates.

Summary: Comparing SDD with standard care in mechanically ventilated adults in the ICU, it was found that SDD is associated with reduced hospital mortality and decreased risk of ventilator-associated pneumonia and ICU-acquired bacteremia.

Summary: The objective of this study is to review the outcomes of acute hypertensive/hypotensive episodes in the perioperative setting. Through a systematic peer review of 3,680 articles, it was found that hypotension was associated with mortality and acute kidney injury, while postsurgical delirium was related to blood pressure lability and hypertension.

Summary: This systematic review provides an overview of gastrointestinal surgical applications and evaluates their prospects for surgical care provision. Most studies on these applications lack adequate clinical evaluation and evidence on effectiveness or safety. Clinical evaluation is needed to assess the efficacy, quality, and safety of these applications.

Summary: The sustainability of poultry farming depends on developing more efficient and autonomous production systems in terms of feed supply. This study aimed to better characterize the development kinetics of the digestive tract in broilers and its relationship with digestive efficiency. Results showed significant differences in organ development between two chicken lines selected for digestive efficiency, with variations in the allometry of the gizzard and intestine segments. Serum pigmentation was identified as a potential biomarker for early discrimination of chickens with high or low digestive efficiency.

Summary: Selective digestive decontamination (SDD) regimens, including topical antibiotic prophylaxis (TAP) and protocolized parenteral antibiotic prophylaxis (PPAP), are highly effective in preventing ICU-acquired infections within randomized concurrent control trials. The concept of SDD suggests potential population benefit, but natural experiments using non-concurrent controls indicate overall population harm associated with higher event rates in the ICU context with SDD use.

Summary: The systematic review found limited evidence to suggest that prehabilitation is associated with increases in objectively measured physical activity, possibly due to most trials being small feasibility/pilot studies. However, significant beneficial associations were reported between objectively measured physical activity during the intervention period and health-related outcomes. Further large-scale studies with clear and consistent reporting of objective measures are needed to better understand the impact of changes in physical activity prior to surgery on surgical and health-related outcomes.
