Summary: This study validated the effectiveness of post hepatectomy liver failure score (PHLF) in cirrhotic patients undergoing curative liver resection for HCC. The results showed that preoperative MELD score and tumor diameter can independently predict hepatic decompensation, while preoperative MELD score, different grades of PHLF, and HCC recurrence can accurately predict survival.

Summary: The study found that laparoscopic liver resection in elderly patients with hepatocellular carcinoma has good short-term outcomes compared to open liver resection, with no significant differences in long-term survival rates between the two groups.

Summary: The study aimed to analyze the impact of minimally invasive intermittent Pringle maneuver (IPM) on postoperative outcomes in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and liver cirrhosis. The findings suggest that the use of IPM in minimally invasive liver resection is safe and feasible for patients with HCC, including those with compensated liver cirrhosis, without increasing the risk of intraoperative blood transfusion or postoperative complications, and without affecting postoperative liver function tests for cirrhotic patients.

Summary: In HCC patients with Child-Pugh grade A liver function, cirrhosis staging can be determined by measuring liver collagen contents using Collagen Proportional Area (CPA), which significantly affects the risk of Posthepatectomy Liver Failure (PHLF). The study also found a significant correlation between CPA and a non-invasive method called Cirrhotic Severity Scoring (CSS) proposed by the team, showing that higher CPA values and extent of hepatectomy are independent risk factors for PHLF, and there is a positive correlation between CPA and CSS.

Summary: Long-term overall survival after liver resection for non-cirrhotic hepatocellular carcinoma is high, with poor prognosis risk factors including multiple tumors, larger tumor size, non-R0 resection, and invasion of the lymphatic vessels.

Summary: This study found that sarcopenia is associated with adverse outcomes after liver resection for HCC, with higher rates of major complications, blood transfusion, hospitalization expenses, and longer hospital stay. Evaluating sarcopenia upon admission can help classify high-risk patients and reduce the risk of major complications.

Summary: Liver resection is the only curative option for large hepatocellular carcinoma, but the survival rate is lower due to high recurrence. There is currently no proper tool for stratifying relapse risk. In this study, we investigated prognostic factors before liver resection in patients with a single large hepatocellular carcinoma.

Summary: This study examines the impact of public insurance status on the survival outcomes of HCC patients after liver resection in China. The results show that underinsured HCC patients have worse survival outcomes after liver resection. This may be due to the limited access to care for underinsured patients, but further exploration is needed for conclusive evidence.

Summary: The study revealed that HCCs in noncirrhotic livers have larger tumor size, more macrotrabecular histologic pattern, higher grade and stage, higher rate of vascular invasion, and more anaplastic tumor cells compared to those in cirrhotic livers. Further research is needed to explore the oncogenesis pathways in noncirrhotic livers for better understanding of HCC pathogenesis.

Summary: Gut dysbiosis and impaired intestinal barrier are associated with different liver diseases, affecting the systemic immune environment through the gut-liver axis. This study identified common network features in patients with liver cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), as well as disease-specific signatures. Alterations in gut microbial/viral composition may contribute to pre-HCC disorders, metabolic reprogramming, or inflammatory microenvironments for hepatocarcinogenesis.

Summary: This study compared the efficacy of liver resection (LR) and percutaneous microwave coagulation therapy (PMCT) for small hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with different degrees of liver cirrhosis. LR provided better surgical outcomes but PMCT had similar long-term results and lower surgical complications in HCC patients with severe cirrhosis.

Summary: A predictive model was developed and validated in this study to accurately predict the prognosis of proliferative hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after curative resection. Liver cirrhosis and larger tumor size were identified as independent risk factors for worse disease-free survival (DFS).

Summary: This retrospective study evaluated the outcomes of laparoscopic liver resection for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients with Child-Pugh B cirrhosis. The results showed that patients in the Child-Pugh A and B7 groups had good outcomes in terms of surgical complications and recurrence. Despite poor outcomes in patients with Child-Pugh B8/9 cirrhosis, laparoscopic liver resection is less likely to interfere with retreatment.

Summary: This study developed a nomogram for predicting late recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) based on clinicopathological and molecular factors. The combination of pSTAT3, pERK1/2 and SYK immunoexpression with high lobular inflammatory activity and cirrhosis was found to predict late HCC recurrence.
