Background BAMSE is a Swedish population-based birth cohort. Objectives To estimate prevalence proportions and the incidence rate of hand eczema in Swedish adolescents, and to compare information given by adolescents and parents. Further aims were to study sex distribution, age at onset and extension of hand eczema. Methods At 16 years of age, 2927 adolescents were included in this study; both adolescent and parental questionnaires were used, as well as clinical examination. Results The 1-year prevalence of hand eczema was 5.2% (n = 152) and 4.0% (n = 116) (P < 0.03), and lifetime prevalence was 9.7% (n = 284) and 7.0% (n = 206) (P < 0.01), respectively, when adolescents and parents reported. The incidence rate was 573/100 000 person-years according to the adolescent report. The level of agreement between adolescents and parents was fair for 1-year and lifetime prevalence (kappa = 0.56 and kappa = 0.49, respectively). According to the Hand Eczema Extent Score, 27.0% (n = 36) had moderate-to-severe hand eczema. Conclusions At the age of 16 years, the 1-year prevalence of hand eczema was substantial, with an incidence rate of the same magnitude as in adults. Female predominance was seen in adolescence. It is preferable that the occurrence of hand eczema is reported by adolescents themselves, as they are the ones most aware of their symptoms.

Preterm birth reduces the risk of IgE sensitization up to early adulthood: A population-based birth cohort study

Niki Mitselou, Niklas Andersson, Anna Bergstrom, Inger Kull, Antonios Georgelis, Marianne van Hage, Anna M. Hedman, Catarina Almqvist, Jonas F. Ludvigsson, Erik Melen

Summary: The study found an inverse association between preterm birth and long-term IgE sensitization to common food and inhalant allergens. No relation was found between post-term birth and IgE sensitization. Replication analyses showed similar risk estimates for sensitization in a meta-analysis.

Fruit, vegetable and dietary antioxidant intake in school age, respiratory health up to young adulthood

Summary: A Swedish study found that higher fruit intake at age 8 was associated with reduced asthma risk and improved lung function, while vegetable intake showed no significant association. Additionally, higher antioxidant intake at age 8 was linked to reduced asthma risk and improved lung function, especially in males and participants sensitized to aeroallergens.

Non-adherence and sub-optimal treatment with asthma medications in young adults: a population-based cohort study

Summary: The study found that young adults with asthma had low dispensing of asthma medication, with relatively low adherence to controller medication and some patients only being prescribed short-acting beta(2)-agonists. Additionally, adherence to controller medication was higher among those diagnosed in specialized care.

Anneli Julander, Emelie Rietz Liljedahl, Helena Korres de Paula, Eva Assarsson, Malin Engfeldt, Margareta Littorin, Christine Shobana Anto, Carola Liden, Karin Broberg

Summary: This study investigated the association between FLG gene status and nickel penetration, revealing that individuals carrying FLG null mutation had higher nickel penetration into the stratum corneum. Further studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Predictors of electronic cigarette use and its association with respiratory health and obesity in young adulthood in Sweden; findings from the population-based birth cohort BAMSE

Summary: Despite the growing popularity of e-cigarettes, limited epidemiological studies have been conducted to investigate their impact on respiratory health in young adults. This study found that e-cigarette use was more common in male smokers and was associated with an increased risk of respiratory symptoms and overweight/obesity. However, the small number of exclusive e-cigarette users hindered firm conclusions.

Preservatives in non-cosmetic products: Increasing human exposure requires action for protection of health

Carola Liden, Niklas Andersson, Ian R. White

Summary: The widespread use of skin sensitizing preservatives is well-known, but their use in non-cosmetic products is less recognized. This study reviewed EU legislations and analyzed data trends to find that the use of preservatives has significantly increased, posing a risk to health. Urgent action is needed to protect public health.

Development of sensitization to peanut and storage proteins and relation to markers of airway and systemic inflammation: A 24-year follow-up

Summary: This study found that sensitization to peanut extract after the age of 4 is mainly caused by cross-sensitization to birch, and IgE sensitization to Ara h 2 rarely occurs after the age of 8. Storage protein sensitization is associated with respiratory and systemic inflammation.

Dietary fibre in relation to asthma, allergic rhinitis and sensitization from childhood up to adulthood

Emmanouela Sdona, Sandra Ekstrom, Niklas Andersson, Niclas Hakansson, Alicja Wolk, Marit Westman, Marianne van Hage, Inger Kull, Erik Melen, Anna Bergstrom

Summary: This study investigated the association between fibre intake and asthma, allergic rhinitis, and IgE sensitization. The results showed that higher fibre intake in childhood may be inversely associated with allergic rhinitis and sensitization to specific allergens up to adulthood. However, avoiding food triggers in allergic rhinitis patients may contribute to these protective associations.

Cobalt nanoparticles cause allergic contact dermatitis in humans

Klara Midander, Paulina Werner, Marlene Isaksson, Lukas Wisgrill, Carola Liden, Nanna Fyhrquist, Anneli Julander

Summary: In our study, we demonstrate that cobalt nanoparticles (CoNPs) have the potential to cause elicitation responses in cobalt sensitized individuals, manifesting in ACD lesions upon patch testing. Analysis of selected gene expression markers reveal identical immunological involvement in response to CoNP and CoCl2, suggesting that cobalt may cause elicitation reactions irrespective of its form at exposure. Finally, our results suggest that when exposed to CoNP, lower doses of Co are needed to elicit the same immunological response compared to when testing with CoCl2.

Treatment with pollen allergen immunotherapy improves health-related quality of life in children and adolescents: a three-year follow-up-study

Helena Agenaes, Anna Lena Brorsson, Inger Kull, Anna Lindholm-Olinder

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of pollen subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT) on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in children and adolescents with allergic rhinoconjunctivitis. The study found that after one year of pollen SCIT, HRQoL significantly improved, symptoms decreased, and the improvement was maintained during the study period. The proportion of severe and very severe symptoms also significantly decreased.
