Summary: Dr. Bernard J. Miller made significant contributions to the development of the heart-lung machine (HLM) through inventions such as the fluid control servo system and left ventricular vent, as well as his involvement in the first successful open-heart surgery. He collaborated extensively with the International Business Machines Corporation and members of Dr. Gibbon's laboratory, which led to advancements in HLM technology.

Summary: Dr. Marika Daniilidou was born in Asia Minor in 1902 and later forced to immigrate to Greece in 1922. Despite the challenges, she pursued education in Germany and became the first certified female orthopaedic surgeon in Greece. She was a pioneer and role model for future generations of Greek women surgeons.

Summary: This study investigates the reactivity of carborane-fused borirane and demonstrates its ability to undergo ring-opening reactions with various Lewis acids and ring-expansion reactions with unsaturated molecules. The results not only enrich the reaction chemistry of boriranes, but also provide new pathways for the synthesis of boron-containing compounds and heterocycles.

Summary: This study presents an efficient and practical lanthanum-catalyzed reaction method for continuous epoxy-ring opening and oxidative dehydrogenative lactonization under visible-light irradiation. The lanthanum catalyst acts as both a Lewis acid and a photocatalyst in this reaction, eliminating the need for additional photocatalysts. The method allows for convenient preparation of isochromanones with oxygen-containing spirocyclic structural units.

Summary: This work presents a generalization of the functions used in FVQ and HCT elements, allowing for arbitrary approximation degree and continuity order. The determinations of these functions for each element are procedural. The completeness of each basis is confirmed by comparing its dimension with a broken basis, and the required continuity order at the vertices is confirmed numerically. Interpolation functions are derived symbolically and simple Matlab codes are provided for application illustration.

Summary: Cyclopropyl ketones can be cross-coupled with organozinc reagents and chlorotrimethylsilane to form 1,3-difunctionalized, ring-opened products. The redox-active terpyridine ligand and the nickel atom cooperate to enable the C-C bond activation step. This approach allows for quick access to difficult-to-make products.

Summary: The direct synthesis of 1,3-diols has been a challenging task, but these compounds are important in bioactive compounds. In this study, a simple and efficient strategy for synthesizing 1,3-diols using controlled electrochemical C-C bond cleavage of arylcyclopropanes with H2O as the hydroxyl source is reported. This method has high atom economy, broad substrate scope, and excellent functional group tolerance, making it applicable for the synthesis of complex natural products and drug derivatives.

Summary: An unprecedented atom-economic and redox-neutral regioselective cascade [3+2] annulation reaction of 2-aryl oxazoline with alpha,beta-unsaturated nitro olefins has been achieved using a Rh-(III) catalyst. This reaction provides a novel set of nitro-functionalized indene-tethered amino alcohols through a synergistic ring-closing/ring-opening strategy, involving the formation of two new C-C bonds and the regioselective cleavage of the C2-O bond of oxazoline. The reaction can be conducted under silver-free mild reaction conditions and exhibits a broad substrate scope.

Summary: An SN1-type fluorination method for monofluoroethers is developed using oxygen-assisted Beckmann fragmentation to drive fluorinative C-C bond cleavage. Cyclic a-aryloxyoximes derived from 3-coumaranone and 1-indanones were investigated as substrates, with N,N-diethylamino-sulfur trifluoride (DAST) acting as a dual-role reagent of an oxime activator and fluoride donor. This method allows for the synthesis of an underdeveloped chemical motif under simple and mild operating conditions.

Summary: This study investigated the association between nickel exposure and serum lipid profiles. The findings revealed a linear association between nickel exposure and serum total cholesterol and LDL-C, while a nonlinear association was observed with HDL-C. However, no significant relationship was found between nickel exposure and triglyceride levels.

Summary: An iridium-catalyzed reductive three-component coupling reaction has been developed for the synthesis of medicinally relevant alpha-amino 1,3,4-oxadiazoles from abundant tertiary amides or lactams, carboxylic acids, and (N-isocyanimino) triphenylphosphorane. The method shows high chemoselectivity and enables late-stage functionalization of drug molecules.
