Summary: The current study assessed the effectiveness of neem, citrus, and garlic essential oils against papaya mealybug. Neem oil with isopropyl alcohol showed the highest efficacy, followed by citrus oil with isopropyl alcohol and citrus oil with paraffin oil. Application of these essential oils and adjuvants also improved plant parameters and increased papaya yield.

Summary: The tropical fruit industry in Malaysia plays an important role in the local economy, but the high sugar and water content of these fruits make them susceptible to diseases. The use of chemical pesticides for disease management is controversial, leading to a growing interest in natural alternatives such as essential oils and plant extracts. Studies suggest that these natural products have the potential to effectively prevent and control fungal and bacterial infections in tropical fruits, and can be used as safe and environmentally friendly biopesticides.

Summary: Soybean mosaic disease caused by soybean mosaic virus (SMV) results in significant losses in yield and seed quality worldwide. This study evaluated the phytotoxicity of Achyrocline satureioides extract and essential oils of Minthostachys verticillata, Origanum vulgare, and Thymus vulgaris on soybean. The results showed that all concentrations tested were safe, and two essential oils inhibited the production of viral antigens, indicating potential for developing an effective biopesticide against SMV.

Summary: Papaya production is affected by various abiotic and biotic factors, including insect pests and environmental conditions. The invasive papaya mealybug is a serious pest that can cause significant yield loss. Current identification methods have limitations, and molecular identification may be the best approach. Plant essential oils and adjuvants are suggested as a safe solution for papaya mealybug control.

Summary: This study investigated the essential oils from medicinal and condimentary species commonly used in the Amazon region for the control of Eragrostis plana Nees, an invasive species with a great impact on forage production. The results showed that all tested essential oils affected the germination and initial growth of E. plana, with Chenopodium ambrosioides oil being the most efficient in inhibiting emergence. These preliminary findings indicate the potential applications of essential oils in the agricultural sector.

Summary: Biological plant protection is a promising alternative to chemical methods for safeguarding plants against diseases, using biological control agents (BCAs) to suppress plant pathogens. While microbial BCAs have the potential to effectively manage crop diseases, there is a need for further research to improve their efficacy. Microbial consortia, consisting of multiple microorganisms with different mechanisms of action, offer promise in enhancing the overall antipathogen effect. This article aims to present an analysis of the current status of microbial consortia-based biocontrol and explore future research directions for biological plant protection.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of essential oils and propolis extract on five phytopathogenic Fusarium species. The results showed that the fungal species, type of essential oil, and concentrations play a significant role in inhibiting the mycelial growth of Fusarium spp. Further research is needed to explore their potential as a safe alternative to chemical pesticides.

Summary: The recent Sargassum tides in the Mexican Caribbean have had an impact on the local ecosystem and economy, but also presented an opportunity for the production of biofuel. This study investigated the potential of converting Sargassum into biomethane, with hydrolysis being the limiting step. The combined pretreatment of hydrogen peroxide and enzymatic treatment proved to be the most effective in terms of biodegradability and methane yield, while the use of granular activated carbon did not significantly affect performance.
