Objective: In order to evaluate the potential zoonotic transmission of Giardia duodenalis, isolates from humans and dogs in the Northwestern region of the Sao Paulo State, Brazil were characterized based on the p-giardin gene. Methods: The samples were analyzed by sequencing of the Nested-PCR products. Results: The A1 and A2 subgenotypes were detected in human and dogs. Cysts of assemblage B, C and D have not been found in any isolates studied. Conclusions: These results are consistent with the view that giardiasis in the largest endemic region of the Brazil should not be seen as a single entity.

Silent circulation of Zika and dengue virus in Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) during a non-epidemic year in the state of Sergipe, northeastern Brazil

Myrela C. S. Jesus, Rynat D. O. Chagas, Matheus L. J. Santos, Rafaela W. F. Santos, Roseli La Corte, Luciane M. Storti-Melo

Summary: This study aimed to assess the presence of DENV and ZIKV in Ae. aegypti females in Sergipe, Brazil during a non-epidemic year. The results showed the presence of ZIKV and DENV infection in a certain percentage of samples, as well as coinfected vectors. The findings highlight the importance of maintaining vigilance during non-epidemic years to prevent new outbreaks.

The industrial versatility of Gluconobacter oxydans: current applications and future perspectives

Gabrielle Alves Ribeiro da Silva, Simone Santos de Sousa Oliveira, Sara Fernandes Lima, Rodrigo Pires do Nascimento, Andrea Regina de Souza Baptista, Sorele Batista Fiaux

Summary: Gluconobacter oxydans is a widely used acetic acid bacterium with the ability to oxidize sugars, polyols, and alcohols into valuable compounds. Recent research has focused on improving industrial applications through metabolic engineering and exploring low-cost feedstocks. Further investigation is needed to make these processes feasible at an industrial scale and overcome the lack of suitable genetic tools for metabolic engineering modifications in G. oxydans.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of different fractions of plant extracts against itraconazole-sensitive and low susceptibility Sporothrix brasiliensis isolates. Ethyl acetate extracts from Ocotea notata and Myrciaria floribunda exhibited the highest antimicrobial activities against sensitive S. brasiliensis. These extracts may serve as potential alternative therapies for this neglected zoonosis, but further research is needed.

Summary: This retrospective study investigated epidemiological and laboratorial aspects of dermatophytosis in Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil, by using spatiotemporal analysis. More than half of all individuals were infected by one or more dermatophytes. The distribution of dermatophytosis varied among different age groups and regions, highlighting the need for specific prevention and control measures in touristic tropical localities.

Influence of trem-1 gene polymorphisms on cytokine levels during malaria by Plasmodium vivax in a frontier area of the Brazilian Amazon

Myrela C. S. de Jesus, Marcelo Cerilo-Filho, Aina D. R. Ramirez, Rubens A. O. Menezes, Margarete S. M. Gomes, Gustavo C. Cassiano, Ricardo Q. Gurgel, Jose R. S. Silva, Tatiana R. Moura, Lilian R. Pratt-Riccio, Andrea R. S. Baptista, Luciane M. Storti-Melo, Ricardo L. D. Machado

Summary: This study aimed to describe the allelic and genotypic frequency of four polymorphisms in the trem-1 gene in Plasmodium vivax-infected patients and to verify their association with clinical and immunological factors. The study found that these SNPs in the trem-1 gene are associated with effector molecules of the innate immunity, and may be essential for the establishment of immunization strategies against malaria.

Summary: This study evaluated the association between five polymorphisms in TLR-4, TLR-6, and TLR9 genes and cytokine levels and clinical parameters in malaria from the Brazil-French Guiana border. An association between TLR4 A299G with parasitemia was observed. Increased levels of IFN-gamma, TNF-alpha, IL-6, and IL-10 were found in certain TLR-4, TLR-6, and TLR-9 gene polymorphisms. The immune response observed varied depending on the human population and Plasmodium species.

Measuring climate change's impact on different sugarcane varieties production in the South of Goias

Thiago Vizine Da Cruz, Ricardo Luiz Machado

Summary: This study analyzed the impact of climate change on sugarcane production and found that climate had negligible effects on yield when different varieties were taken into account. Therefore, the Brazilian government should continue to incentivize the development and use of new sugarcane varieties to promote sustainable production and contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Summary: Through whole genome sequencing of P. vivax isolates from 7 Brazilian states, researchers have identified distinct genetic diversity of P. vivax parasites in Brazil compared to other global regions. They have also discovered mutations in genes under selective pressure linked to antimalarial drugs and mosquito vectors. This study provides important insights into the population structure of P. vivax in Brazil and can inform future research and control measures.
