Chronic renal insufficiency disease (CRI) leads to uremia in hemodialysis patients and induces a state of immunodepression that results in higher frequencies of infections and diarrhea. Hemodialysis patients resident in the city of Campo Mourao, Parana, Brazil were analyzed from April 2006 through September 2007 for Blastocystis sp. and other intestinal parasites and for associated diarrhea. Fecal samples from 86 hemodialysis patients and 146 healthy (reference) persons were examined by standard methods for detecting ova, larvae and cysts, which included preservation in 10% formalin and the Kinyoun method. Thirty-three hemodialysis patients (45.1%) and 36 reference individuals (25.7%) were found to be parasitized. The differences in the percentages of parasitism and polyparasitism between the reference group and the chronic renal patients was significant (p = 0.0318 and 0.0019, respectively). Blastocystis sp. (18%-20.1%), Endolimax nana (14%-16.3%), Cryptosporidium sp. (4%-4.7%) and Entamoeba coli (4%-4.7%) were the most frequent protozoa found in the hemodialysis patients. Parasitism was not significantly associated with diarrhea (p = 0.9947) or with decreased white blood cell counts (p = 0.7046) in these individuals. Because parasitic infections may be an important comorbidity factor in hemodialysis patients, we suggest that parasitological stool examinations, especially for Blastocystis sp. and Cryptosporidium sp., be included in routine medical follow-up examinations of these patients.

Summary: Viral infections pose a significant threat to public health, and the development of new antivirals and control strategies is crucial. Current antiviral therapies target various viruses, but many viral agents still lack effective treatments. Future research directions include nanotechnologies, monoclonal antibodies, and the CRISPR-Cas system for new antiviral therapies.

Increased levels of IL-17A in serum and amniotic fluid of pregnant women with acute toxoplasmosis

Fernanda Ferreira Evangelista, Leticia Nishi, Cristiane Maria Colli, Priscila de Laet Sant'Ana, Lourenco T. Higa, Luiz Henrique Garcia Muniz, Ana Lucia Falavigna-Guilherme

Summary: This study compared the levels of cytokines in the amniotic fluid and serum of pregnant women with acute toxoplasmosis. It found that IL-17A was significantly higher in the acute phase of infection, suggesting a potential protective factor against fetal infection. The absence of T. gondii DNA in the amniotic fluid indicates a limited transmission risk to the fetus.

Okara and okara modified and functionalized with iron oxide nanoparticles for the removal of Microcystis aeruginosa and cyanotoxin

Grace A. V. Magalhaes-Ghiotto, Jean P. S. Natal, Leticia Nishi, Murilo Barbosa de Andrade, Raquel G. Gomes, Rosangela Bergamasco

Summary: In this study, a new adsorbent was developed by using hydrolyzed and functionalized Okara with immobilized magnetic nanoparticles for the removal of cyanobacteria and its toxins. The results showed that the Okara hydrolyzed and functionalized with iron oxide demonstrated the best removal efficiency.

Synthesis of a Chemically Modified Biosorbent Based on the Invasive Plant Leucaena leucocephala and Its Application in Metformin Removal

Luis Fernando Cusioli, Leticia Nishi, Laiza Bergamasco Beltran, Anna Carla Ribeiro, Rosangela Bergamasco, Milena Keller Bulla, Rhana Keterly Facina, Gustavo Affonso Pisano Mateus

Summary: The present study investigated the use of a biosorbent produced from Leucaena leucocephala pods for the removal of metformin from aqueous solutions. The experimental data were in accordance with the Langmuir isothermal model. The developed material showed promising results in the removal of metformin, particularly because it is an innovative material, and there are no studies in the literature on drug removal using L. leucocephala.
