The aim of this study was to evaluate the pathogenicity of Vibrio alginolyticus isolated from an outbreak of sea horse Hippocampus reidi reared in the State of Santa Catarina, Brazil, by experimental infection. Sea horses with necrosis on the mouth epithelium were collected from aquaria at the Aquaculture Department, UFSC and the bacterium isolated from the mouth, liver, heart and blood in tiosulphate citrate bilesalt sucrose agar broth. The strains were identified by API 20E kit with 99.1% probability as Vibrio alginolyticus. Twelve adult sea horses (9.63 +/- 2.42 g and 15.12 +/- 0.87 cm) were distributed in six aquaria of 10 L capacity with aerated sea water. Fish from three aquaria were submitted to an immersion bath in a solution containing 1.0 x 10(7) CFU of V. alginolyticus/mL for 15 minutes. Fish from the other three aquaria received the same procedure without bacteria. Twenty four hours after this challenge, 100% mortality was observed in the animals infected with V. alginolyticus. No mortality was observed in non-infected fish. Hyperplasia, displacement and fusion of secondary lamellae of the gills; leukocyte infiltration and necrotic foci in the kidney; hyperplasia, sinusoidal deformation and necrotic foci in the liver were observed in histopathological analysis. The V. alginolyticus isolated in this study was pathogenic to H. reidi and constitutes an important sanitary problem to its culture.

Laboratory-controlled challenges of streptococcosis in Nile tilapia using the oral route (infected-feed) for infection

Marco Shizuo Owatari, Lucas Cardoso, Scheila Anelise Pereira, Ulisses de Padua Pereira, Leonardo Tachibana, Mauricio Laterca Martins, Jose Luiz Pedreira Mourino

Summary: This study evaluated three different routes of Streptococcus agalactiae infection in Nile tilapia and found that intraperitoneal and intragastric routes were more aggressive, causing greater brain damage and early mortality, while oral inoculum presented less intensity in brain lesions and a chronic immune response, with longer mortality time. Oral infected-feed administration may be an innovative method for future aquaculture research experiments.

Summary: This study evaluated the use of two microencapsulated probiotic additives in extruded diets for juvenile Nile tilapia, and found that the addition of probiotics improved the zootechnical and health aspects of the fish. The fish fed with probiotic diets showed greater survival, improvements in feed conversion, as well as in the specific growth rate. Histological and histomorphometric analysis revealed that the probiotic treatments had a positive effect on the intestinal health of the fish. Metagenomic evaluation also showed significant differences in the intestinal microbiomes between the treatments. In the challenge against the pathogen A. hydrophila, the probiotic treatments exhibited lower cumulative mortality compared to the control group.

Summary: Proper waste management in biofloc technology systems and the study of integrated aquaculture are important. This study evaluated the effects of fish feed and microalgae addition on an integrated shrimp and fish culture system. The results showed that fish feed and microalgae improved fish growth performance and system yield without affecting waste production and water quality.

Bioaccumulation of trace metals in Neoechinorhynchus buttnerae and in its fish host tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) from fish farms

Gabriela Tomas Jeronimo, Edson Luniere Porto, Marcos Alexandre Bolson, Ezio Sargentini-Junior, Mauricio Laterca Martins, Matheus Gomes da Cruz

Summary: Fish parasites, such as Neoechinorhynchus buttnerae, can accumulate high concentrations of trace metals and serve as bioindicators of environmental contamination. The presence of metals in the parasite was significantly higher than in the host fish Colossoma macropomum, indicating their ability to accumulate metals. The results suggest that the parasite directly influences the concentrations of trace metals in the fish tissues.

Summary: This study investigated the efficacy of sodium chloride and trichlorfon against Dawestrema cycloancistrium and its physiological effects on Arapaima gigas. The results showed that both short baths and long baths were effective in treating the infestation of Dawestrema cycloancistrium. It is recommended to use a concentration of 12 g/L sodium chloride and 5 mg/L trichlorfon for short baths.

Summary: This study evaluated the pharmacokinetic profile of basil essential oil in juvenile tambaqui. The results showed that the oil was rapidly absorbed and distributed to different tissues in the fish, with varying half-lives in plasma and various tissues. Histological evaluation of the fish gills showed reversible lesions, while no changes were observed in the liver and spleen. The biochemical and pharmacokinetic results confirmed the safety and rapid elimination of basil essential oil in tambaqui.
