Summary: This research aims to assess the awareness and knowledge about osteoporosis among osteoporosis patients, including risk factors, health condition, supplementation used, socio-demographic factors, and other variables. The results indicate that the more frequent the symptoms associated with the disease, the lower the general self-assessment of the health condition of the respondents. Additionally, almost half of the respondents stated that their knowledge of osteoporosis is negligible. Moreover, the use of dietary supplements significantly differentiated respondents in terms of health self-assessment, and there is a significant relationship between the self-assessment of knowledge about osteoporosis and the use of dietary supplements.

Summary: The study revealed that most patients with diabetes mellitus have dyslipidemia, but many are unaware or untreated for their condition, resulting in suboptimal control rates. Factors influencing optimal control of dyslipidemia include age, urban living, higher body mass index, lower glycated hemoglobin levels, hypertension, poorer self-rated health status, and receiving regular health check-ups.

Summary: This study aimed to describe the trend in the prevalence, awareness, and treatment of isolated diastolic hypertension (IDH) in the United States from 2001 to 2018. The results showed that the prevalence of IDH decreased from 2001-2002 to 2017-2018, and although there were increases in awareness and treatment, they remained below 50%.

Summary: The prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) and impaired fasting blood glucose (IFG) is high among adults in India, while the levels of awareness, treatment, and control are still low. There are significant differences in these levels between different age groups. Multifaceted approaches, including improved awareness, adherence to treatment, and better preventive and counseling services, are crucial to halt the development of diabetes in India.

Summary: This study examined the relationship between phytochemical-rich food intake and osteoporosis incidence in premenopausal and postmenopausal women. It found that postmenopausal women with the highest intake of phytochemical-rich foods had a 16% lower risk of osteoporosis. No significant association was observed among premenopausal women. These findings suggest that consuming phytochemical-rich foods may offer protection against osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.

Summary: Gender differences play a significant role in hypertension epidemiology, with clear disparities in prevalence, awareness, treatment, and control between different age groups of men and women, mainly influenced by hormonal status. In high cardiovascular risk European countries like Romania, gender gaps in hypertension prevalence may decrease over time, with females expected to maintain higher awareness and treatment rates than males, while an upward trend in blood pressure control is predicted only for women.

Summary: The study found that oral bisphosphonates are the most commonly used treatment for postmenopausal osteoporosis in an Asian population, with treatment interruptions being most notable in the first year and highest for oral bisphosphonates. Users of intravenous ibandronate, pamidronate, zoledronic acid, and SERMs were less likely to interrupt treatment compared to oral bisphosphonate users. Characteristics such as rheumatoid arthritis and concomitant use of glucocorticoids were associated with increased odds of treatment interruption in specific treatment groups.

Summary: The study found that even small amounts of physical activity may help decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease, coronary heart disease, and stroke in breast cancer survivors. However, the benefits of physical activity for obese and overweight breast cancer survivors were smaller compared to those with normal weight. The frequency of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) showed a reverse J-curve association with cardiovascular disease, with the best benefit observed in the group engaging in 3-4 times MVPA per week.

Summary: Respecting patients' preference for place of care is crucial in advance care planning for advanced cancer. This retrospective study in South Korea investigated adult cancer patients referred to a palliative care consultation team, recording their preference for place of care and demographic/clinical factors. Among the 891 patients referred, 23.6% preferred home discharge and only 53.8% of them were actually discharged home. Female patients had higher home discharge rates, while those with poor oral intake or dyspnea had lower rates. Additionally, 32.8% of patients discharged home had unintended hospital visits within 2 months. Individualized care planning considering relevant factors is necessary to meet patients' preferences for end-of-life care.

Summary: This study developed new techniques to define zones of BMU activity based on the 3D morphology of remodeling spaces in rabbit cortical bone and integrated morphological data with the BMU longitudinal erosion rate (LER) to elucidate the spatial-temporal coordination of BMUs and estimate mineral apposition rate (MAR). The results showed that the manual and semi-automated methods accurately defined the zones of remodeling spaces, and these techniques have the potential to assess dynamic parameters of bone resorption and formation.

Summary: Age- and disuse-related bone loss both lead to decreases in bone mineral density, cortical thickness, and trabecular thickness and connectivity. It is important to experimentally compare these two mechanisms at a structural and transcriptomic level to better understand their similarities and differences. This study compares the effects of hindlimb unloading and aging on bone microarchitecture and gene expression in mice, finding that while both induce similar changes, aging has a greater impact on the transcriptome and tissue level.

Summary: Osteogenesis imperfecta is a hereditary bone disease that weakens bones and increase fracture risk. Current interventions mainly focus on increasing bone mass, but the compromised tissue-level material properties are not addressed. A study found that a RAL analog could reduce fracture risk, but further development is needed for optimal results in patients with osteogenesis imperfecta.

Lower serum lumican levels were associated with reduced bone mass and grip strength, indicating that lumican levels could be used as a biomarker for assessing the risk of osteosarcopenia, osteoporosis, or sarcopenia in older adults.

Summary: Intramembranous bone regeneration is important in joint and tooth replacement, but its underlying mechanisms are not well understood. This study found that increased periostin gene expression preceded increases in osteogenic genes during bone regeneration. Using a genetic mouse model, the researchers discovered that cells transiently expressing periostin played a critical role in intramedullary intramembranous bone regeneration.

Summary: The increased risk of fractures observed in adults with type 1 diabetes (T1D) cannot be solely explained by modest decreases in areal bone mineral density (BMD). Accumulation of advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs) in bone has been suggested as a possible cause for the increased bone fragility in diabetes. Although the evidence linking AGEs and fractures in individuals with T1D is limited, recent data show that AGEs, as measured by skin intrinsic fluorescence, are a risk factor for lower BMD in T1D. Further research is needed to determine if there is a causal relationship between fractures and AGEs in T1D. If confirmed, this could lead to interventions that can reduce AGE accumulation and ultimately reduce fractures in T1D patients.
