Summary: This study investigated dogs that underwent surgery for intracranial meningioma resection and found that 94% of dogs survived to hospital discharge with a median survival time of 386 days. Approximately 50% of dogs survived for less than a year, while 25% survived between 1 and 2 years, 15% survived between 2 and 3 years, and 10% survived for greater than 3 years following discharge from hospital. The use of adjunctive therapies did not show a clear benefit in terms of survival time. Dogs that had a transfrontal approach had a significantly reduced survival time compared to those that had a rostrotentorial approach.

Summary: This study retrospectively described the surgical treatment and outcomes of a large cohort of dogs with sterile prostatic cysts. Most dogs experienced resolution of clinical signs after partial or complete resection and/or omentalization, although postoperative urinary incontinence was frequent. The study provides evidence on the prognosis and rate of complications associated with canine sterile prostatic cysts treated surgically.

Summary: The study found that prolonged surgery time is the only factor associated with an increased risk of SSI in dogs, with no association detected between other factors evaluated and SSI occurrence. Orthopedic and neurosurgical procedures, including those involving implants, should not automatically be considered high-risk procedures requiring perioperative antimicrobial prophylaxis.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the complications and short- and long-term outcomes of surgical intervention for esophageal foreign bodies in dogs. The results showed that a certain percentage of dogs experienced complications after surgery, but most of the complications were minor. The survival rate upon discharge was high, and follow-up data revealed that a small number of owners reported occasional vomiting or regurgitation symptoms.

Summary: The goal of this retrospective study was to determine the incidence and risk factors of surgical site infections (SSI) after enucleation in dogs. The results showed that the incidence of SSI after enucleation was 5% and no risk factors for SSI were identified. However, there were no identified risk factors to guide clinical decision-making for the prevention of SSI.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between antipsychotic treatment and risk of psychiatric hospitalization in first-episode schizophrenia patients using a population database in South Korea. The findings suggest that long-acting injectable antipsychotics, such as LAI paliperidone and clozapine, are associated with lower treatment discontinuation and better effectiveness in lowering the risk of psychiatric hospitalization.

Summary: This study describes the clinical features, treatment, and outcomes in dogs with deep neck infections. All dogs presented with cervical swelling, with masses or abscesses commonly seen on CT. Polymicrobial infections were common, and the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio was correlated with the duration of clinical signs and length of hospitalization. All dogs survived and had complete resolution of clinical signs during long-term follow-up.

Summary: Antibiotic stewardship is crucial in veterinary medicine to prevent resistant bacterial infections. A study on surgical site infections in dogs undergoing oromaxillofacial oncologic surgery found that anesthesia lasting over 6 hours significantly contributed to infection development. Further research may be needed to determine the optimal use of antibiotics in these procedures.

Summary: This study assessed risk factors for MDR/XDR bacterial infections in heart transplant patients within three months after surgery. The results showed that prolonged hospital stay before transplant was correlated with MDR/XDR infections, leading to lower eradication rates and longer hospital stays. Preventative measures are needed to avoid contamination of central venous catheters and the surgical site.

Summary: Prostatic hyperplasia (PH) is an androgen-dependent condition common in intact dogs, similar to the condition in men. This study aimed to investigate the association between relative prostatic size and hormone concentrations, age, and weight of the dog. The results showed weak associations between hormone concentrations, age, and weight with prostatic size.

Summary: Bernese mountain dogs are a large dog breed with a complex genomic architecture due to high levels of inbreeding and relatedness. They are multi-purpose companion and family dogs, but are predisposed to several genetic disorders. The analysis of whole-genome sequencing data revealed limited clustering between European and USA dogs and identified several fixed regions harboring genetic variants associated with morphological traits and diseases. The breed's strong predisposition to hematopoietic cancers may be attributed to the presence of immune cell-regulating genes in shared runs of homozygosity.

Summary: In this study, psychological constructs were used to explain farmers' adoption of mastitis control options (MCOs). Results showed that farmers' decisions were influenced by their perceived behavioral control and subjective norms, while attitude did not contribute to adoption behavior. Therefore, it is important to strengthen farmers' perceived behavioral control and subjective norms to improve adoption of mastitis control options.

Summary: Arthrodesis is a salvage surgical procedure used to treat joint conditions in dogs and cats. However, it is associated with a high risk of complications. This study aimed to develop a biomechanical test model for partial tarsal arthrodesis and evaluate the fixation strength of a new resorbable bone glue. Results showed that the glue provided sufficient fixation strength and could potentially improve the stability of arthrodesis surgery.

Summary: This study investigated the genetic variation of body weight within different dog breeds and found that on average about 50% of the total variation in body weight between dogs, within a breed, depends on genetic differences. There were rather small changes over time in the genetic predisposition for high or low body weight. In conclusion, body weight in dogs is highly heritable, but there is very little selection on it.

Summary: The study compared the biomechanical properties of using a novel composite construct (AdhFix) to an interfragmentary Kirschner wire or a reconstruction plate for epicondylar stabilization in simulated lateral unicondylar humeral fractures. The yield load was significantly higher for AdhFix group compared to the pin group, indicating mechanical superiority of AdhFix over K-wires. The results support further investigation of the novel composite for fracture fixation in lateral humeral condylar fractures.
