Summary: This study investigated the presence of widespread pain in a well-defined TMD group and found that patients with widespread pain showed higher somatization and anxiety levels. Treatment response was also less in the widespread pain group. The study suggests that the WPI could be a useful tool in predicting TMD treatment response and identifying patients with higher psychological distress.

Summary: This study compared the effectiveness of Fascial Manipulation (R) (FM) and conventional treatments for temporomandibular disorders (TMD) patients. The results showed that FM is a rapid, safe, and cost-effective method to reduce pain, improve function, and increase mouth opening in TMD patients.

Summary: Many studies have supported the relationship between the cranial region, temporomandibular joint (TMJ), and cervical spine, but the mechanism of this relationship remains unclear. There is still controversy regarding the connection between temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) and changes in head and neck posture. Understanding the complex interrelations between the stomatognathic system, cervical spine, pain, and dysfunctions in other areas of the body is important in effectively treating patients. Dental surgeons should collaborate with neurologists, orthopedists, or neurosurgeons to make successful therapeutic interventions.

Summary: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are musculoskeletal diseases affecting the jaw muscles and temporomandibular joints. Chronic TMD can be considered as a condition with chronic primary orofacial pain. The main objectives of treatment are to decrease pain, improve jaw joint function, and reduce muscle spasms and pain.

Summary: The objective of this study was to assess the correlation between menopausal symptoms and pain caused by temporomandibular disorder (TMD) and the impact of sociodemographic factors on this association. The results showed that TMD-induced pain and menopausal symptoms were correlated, especially during the late menopausal transition. Additionally, sociodemographic factors, such as schooling, had a major influence on symptoms in early postmenopause.

Summary: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are a group of orofacial pain conditions that are the most common non-dental pain complaint in the maxillofacial region. Due to the complexity of its etiology, diagnosis and management of TMD remain a challenge with lack of consensus. Clinical examination is considered crucial in the diagnosis of TMD, while imaging may serve as a valuable adjunct in selected cases.

Summary: This study examined the pathology of joints in TMD patients using the Piper MRI-based classification and found that muscle pain and occlusal interference are not indicators of TMJ damage. It was also discovered that as the Piper classes increased, TMJ pain only increased up to a certain stage.

Summary: This study assessed masticatory muscle electromyographic (EMG) activity in children diagnosed with pain-related temporomandibular disorders (TMD-P) and awake bruxism (AB), as well as the diagnostic value of surface electromyography (sEMG) in diagnosing TMD-P in subjects with AB. The results showed statistically significant intergroup differences in the activity of the anterior temporal (TA) and masseter (MM) muscles at rest and during maximum voluntary clenching (MVC). sEMG demonstrated moderate accuracy in discriminating between TMD-P and non-TMD children.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between otologic symptoms, specifically tinnitus, and temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Previous literature studies focused on treatment and alleviation of otologic symptoms, limited to randomized clinical trials, case reports, and prospective studies. A search in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science yielded 693 articles, of which 20 were eligible. The connection between TMD and tinnitus is complex, and it is unclear if TMD is the source or a symptom of tinnitus. More research is needed to understand the precise mechanisms behind this relationship.

Summary: Remote assessment of patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) is feasible and presents a high degree of accuracy, especially for the diagnoses of myalgia and arthralgia. However, there is lower agreement between the different examination protocols and the reference standard examination for the diagnosis of disk displacement with reduction.

Summary: Disturbed nocturnal sleep contributes to orofacial pain through central sensitization. This study evaluated pain sensitivity and the prevalence of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) in patients with narcolepsy type 1 (NT1). No significant differences were found in pain perception or TMD diagnosis between NT1 patients and controls, but NT1 patients reported higher levels of depressive symptoms.

Summary: This comprehensive review investigates the modulatory effects of oxygen-ozone (O2O3) therapy on oxidative stress in patients with musculoskeletal and temporomandibular disorders (TMD). O2O3 therapy is found to have potential as an adjunct treatment in various pathological conditions characterized by chronic inflammatory processes and immune overactivation.

Summary: This systematic review examines whether there is scientific evidence indicating that patients with temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJ-OA) are associated with increased sleep disorders or impaired sleep quality. After screening and analyzing 7 relevant articles, the review finds insufficient evidence to support the association between TMJ OA and increased sleep disorders or poorer sleep quality.

Summary: The study reveals that frequent jaw-face pain and headache are primarily associated with signs of regional and widespread hyperalgesia, potentially linked to central sensitization mechanism. Signs of widespread hyperalgesia should be taken into consideration in diagnostic algorithms for patients with pain in the jaw, face, and head regions.

Summary: A clinical study was conducted on 83 adolescents with symptomatic disc displacement with reduction to evaluate the treatment outcome of a jaw exercise intervention program combined with an information/counselling program compared to information/counselling alone. Results showed that the combined JE/IC group had significantly more improvements in painful catching/locking, eating ability, jaw function limitation, and reported higher credibility and satisfaction with the treatment method compared to the IC group, indicating that the internet-delivered JE/IC program is a feasible and cost-effective treatment option for adolescents with symptomatic disc displacement with reduction.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate clinical signs related to pain and dysfunction in the orofacial and neck regions after whiplash trauma. The results showed that individuals with a whiplash trauma had a higher risk for pain on palpation in jaw and neck muscles and lower jaw opening, both in the short and long term.
