Summary: Very little is known about the breast cancer risk profile among American Indian women. This retrospective case control study explored the association of common risk factors among American Indian women with and without breast cancer, showing weak positive associations between some risk factors and breast cancer. The study found nulliparity to be the only consistently significant risk factor.

Summary: This study is the first to investigate the association between oxidative balance score (OBS) and risk of osteoporosis. The results suggest that a higher OBS, indicating a predominance of anti-oxidant exposures, is associated with lower risk of lumbar spine osteoporosis among postmenopausal Iranian women.

Summary: This study investigated the knowledge of osteoporosis, with a focus on women with and without a migration background. The results showed that women had low levels of knowledge about osteoporosis, with higher age and education level correlating with greater knowledge. Patients with gynecologic cancer were less informed. There were differences in vitamin D intake between migrant and non-migrant women.

Summary: Identification of risk factors associated with incident fractures among middle-aged women and men revealed age, sex, body mass index, previous fracture, family history of fracture, leisure-time physical activity, heavy work, living alone, smoking, and alcohol consumption as significant factors. Individuals with more risk factors had a higher fracture risk, while moderate leisure-time physical activity was associated with lower risk.

Summary: This study found that activity before the fall, type of fall, and falling direction were the main influencing factors of vertebral fractures in older men and women. Risk factors for men included low education, asthma, depression, among others, while for women they included fracture history and osteoporosis. Combining predisposing and situational risk factors can provide a more comprehensive assessment of vertebral fracture risk.

Summary: Some proteins can change their functions by remodeling their secondary and tertiary structures in response to cellular stimuli. These fold-switching proteins are associated with autoimmune dysfunction, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 infection, and more. This review discusses the features that distinguish fold-switching proteins from single-fold and intrinsically disordered proteins, with the aim of advancing computational prediction and experimental characterization of fold switchers.

Summary: Although homologous protein sequences are expected to adopt similar structures, this study found that a family of bacterial response regulator proteins exhibited divergent structures in their homologous DNA-binding subunits. This structural transformation was facilitated by amino acid substitutions and likely expanded DNA-binding specificity. The approach used in this study provides a methodology to identify secondary structure switching in other protein families.

Summary: This systematic review included seven prospective cohort studies and found that increasing dietary calcium intake was significantly associated with a reduced risk of breast cancer. However, total calcium intake did not show a significant inverse association. The dose-response analysis showed that each additional 350 mg per day of dietary calcium intake was associated with a 6% lower risk of breast cancer.
