Summary: The mortality rate of Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia has decreased over the past three decades, but one in four patients still die within three months. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infection is associated with a higher mortality rate, while more recent time periods have shown lower mortality rates.

Summary: This study aimed to describe the morbidity profile of COVID-19 deaths in Portugal during 2020, finding that deaths primarily occurred in individuals aged 80 years or older, with a slightly higher mortality rate in males. The study observed high levels of comorbidities, with varying prevalence rates of zero morbidity and high multimorbidity throughout the year, especially during peak mortality waves.

Summary: This study investigated the 1-year risks of Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia, sepsis, and pneumonia in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention and treated with ticagrelor or clopidogrel. The results showed that treatment with ticagrelor was associated with significantly lower risks of Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia, sepsis, and pneumonia compared to treatment with clopidogrel.

Summary: The study compared two prediction models for 30-day mortality after hip fracture surgery, and found that the Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) model and the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) model had equal predictive ability. However, the ASA score may be the preferred tool for predicting 30-day mortality after hip fracture.

Summary: Adjustment for each comorbidity as separate dichotomous covariate is the preferable strategy in larger samples, while splitting CCI into multiple categories is preferable in smaller studies. Suboptimal adjustment strategies may cause observable bias, although of limited magnitude. Researchers should carefully choose the adjustment strategies to achieve desired mitigation of bias sources.

Summary: This study evaluated the predictive ability of Charlson comorbidity index (CCI) for all-cause mortality in elderly patients undergoing emergency abdominal surgery. The results showed that in patients with CCI >= 4, the survival rate was lower, and open surgery and high CCI values were associated with all-cause death.

Summary: This study aims to identify potential risk factors associated with death in COVID-19 patients hospitalized due to pneumonia, and to develop a novel COVID-19 mortality score. The CoLACD scoring model, based on CCI and lymphocyte ratio, was shown to be an effective tool for predicting mortality in COVID-19 patients.

Summary: This study investigated the comorbidity status of hip fracture patients in Denmark and its impact on prognosis. Over 50% of the patients had moderate to severe comorbidity. Different comorbidity indices produced different results, but showed comparable associations with mortality. These results are important for clinicians to improve prevention and treatment, and for researchers to determine the appropriate comorbidity measure to use.

Summary: This study describes the incidence of in-hospital and 42-day mortality in patients with infective endocarditis (IE) treated with ceftaroline. The results suggest that increased Charlson comorbidity index (CCI), presence of methicillin-resistance, and evidence of septic shock are associated with poor prognosis in IE patients treated with ceftaroline.

Summary: The objective of this study is to understand the characteristics of multimorbid patients who require hospital care and to predict their rehospitalization and length of stay using machine learning models. The results show that the use of random forest algorithms and direct use of diagnoses codes have better predictive performance. However, the predictive power of the algorithms is limited for length of stay.

Summary: The study aimed to test a polypharmacy-based scale against Charlson's Comorbidity Index (CCI) in predicting outcomes in chronic complex adult patients post-Emergency Department (ED) visit, finding that the polypharmacy-based scale outperformed the CCI in predicting 6-month mortality. These results were replicated in external validation cohorts.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the efficacy and safety of short-course antibiotic therapy in routine clinical settings among patients hospitalized with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) and early clinical response. The study found similar outcomes in terms of mortality, readmission, and new antibiotic prescriptions between short-course and prolonged-course therapies, supporting the use of short-course therapy in routine clinical settings.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the experience with the use of sotrovimab in high-risk groups following SARS-CoV-2 infection. The study found that over 90% of the patients treated with sotrovimab belonged to high-risk groups. Sotrovimab-treated individuals remained at a high risk of hospitalization and death, which was strongly associated with immunocompromised state and age. Receiving more than 3 COVID-19 vaccines was associated with a decreased risk of death and hospitalization.

Summary: This study assessed the clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients with community-acquired Staphylococcus aureus meningitis from Denmark and the Netherlands. The results showed that community-acquired S. aureus meningitis mainly occurred in patients with concurrent endocarditis or spondylodiscitis, and had a high case fatality rate.

Summary: This study compared the intrinsic virulence of the SARS-CoV-2 omicron variant and the delta variant in hospitalized adults with COVID-19. The results showed that patients with the omicron variant had milder hypoxemia and higher 30- and 60-day survival rates compared to those with the delta variant, mainly due to a higher proportion of omicron patients vaccinated with three doses of an mRNA vaccine.

Summary: This study investigated the association between soluble CD40 ligand, soluble thrombomodulin, and syndecan-1 with metabolic syndrome in people with HIV, and their association with HIV-specific variables. The results indicated that high levels of soluble CD40 ligand were associated with an increased risk of metabolic syndrome.
