Background: Feed intake plays an important economic role in beef cattle, and is related with feed efficiency, weight gain and carcass traits. However, the phenotypes collected for dry matter intake and feed efficiency are scarce when compared with other measures such as weight gain and carcass traits. The use of genomic information can improve the power of inference of studies on these measures, identifying genomic regions that affect these phenotypes. This work performed the genome-wide association study (GWAS) for dry matter intake (DMI) and residual feed intake (RFI) of 720 Nellore cattle (Bos taurus indicus). Results: In general, no genomic region extremely associated with both phenotypic traits was observed, as expected for the variables that have their regulation controlled by many genes. Three SNPs surpassed the threshold for the Bonferroni multiple test for DMI and two SNPs for RFI. These markers are located on chromosomes 4, 8, 14 and 21 in regions near genes regulating appetite and ion transport and close to important QTL as previously reported to RFI and DMI, thus corroborating the literature that points these two processes as important in the physiological regulation of intake and feed efficiency. Conclusions: This study showed the first GWAS of DMI to identify genomic regions associated with feed intake and efficiency in Nellore cattle. Some genes and QTLs previously described for DMI and RFI, in other subspecies (Bos taurus taurus), that influences these phenotypes are confirmed in this study.

Different prenatal supplementation strategies and its impacts on reproductive and nutrigenetics assessments of bulls in finishing phase

Guilherme Henrique Gebim Polizel, Rafael Espigolan, Paulo Fantinato-Neto, Ricardo de Francisco Strefezzi, Raissa Braido Rangel, Cynthia de Carli, Aricia Christofaro Fernandes, Evandro Fernando Ferreira Dias, Roberta Cavalcante Cracco, Miguel Henrique de Almeida Santana

Summary: This study examined the impact of different prenatal nutrition approaches on reproductive and nutrigenetic traits of male offspring during the finishing phase. The findings suggest a genotype-environment interaction among the different prenatal treatments, with the FP treatment showing a higher incidence of major sperm defects compared to the NP treatment.

Multi-breed genomic predictions and functional variants for fertility of tropical bulls

Laercio R. Porto-Neto, Pamela A. Alexandre, Nicholas J. Hudson, John Bertram, Sean M. McWilliam, Andre W. L. Tan, Marina R. S. Fortes, Michael R. McGowan, Ben J. Hayes, Antonio Reverter

Summary: Worldwide, the identification and selection of fertile bulls plays a crucial role in beef production. In this study, fertility-related phenotypes and high-density DNA genotypes were collected for thousands of bulls from six tropical breeds, revealing both genetic correlations and the importance of breed representation for accurate genomic estimated breeding values. Several candidate genes associated with bull fertility traits were identified, contributing to early-life selection and genetic improvement strategies. This study also enhances our knowledge of the molecular basis of male fertility in mammals.

Summary: A structural variant (SV1) in the agouti signaling protein gene (ASIP) has been found to be strongly associated with hair coat darkness in specific regions of zebu cattle from the Nellore breed. Analysis of whole-genome sequences of zebu and taurine cattle revealed that ASIP-SV1 is commonly found in 45.9% of zebu cattle and 6.3% of taurine cattle, with the taurine cattle showing zebu introgression or being from crossbreeding. This study provides evidence of the widespread presence of ASIP-SV1 in both zebu populations and taurine cattle with zebu admixture.

Summary: Given the economic importance of fertility and reproductive traits in the beef cattle industry, understanding their genetic background and developing effective breeding strategies are crucial. This study estimated variance components, heritability, and genetic correlations for fertility, female precocity, and semen production and quality traits in Nellore cattle using genomic information. The findings highlight the heritability and genetic relationships among these traits, providing valuable information for breeding programs to improve reproductive performance in Nellore cattle.

Impacts of Different Prenatal Supplementation Strategies on the Plasma Metabolome of Bulls in the Rearing and Finishing Phase

Guilherme Henrique Gebim Polizel, Aricia Christofaro Fernandes, Edison Furlan, Barbara Carolina Teixeira Prati, Jose Bento Sterman Ferraz, Miguel Henrique de Almeida Santana

Summary: This study examined how maternal nutrition affects the plasma metabolome of Nellore bulls during the rearing and finishing phases, as well as the metabolic differences between these phases. Three nutritional approaches were used for 126 cows during pregnancy. Blood samples were collected from male offspring during the rearing and finishing phases. Targeted metabolome analysis was performed on the plasma samples. Significant metabolites were identified between treatments and over time. No significant metabolic pathways were found in the finishing phase, but significant pathways were found in the rearing phase. Therefore, prenatal nutrition has an impact on the plasma metabolome of bulls, and different production stages affect the metabolic levels of bulls.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of early weaning on body composition, hormone concentrations, metabolites, and reproductive performance of Nelore cows. The results showed that early weaning at 150 days can successfully recover the cow's body condition and improve the pregnancy success rate in the next breeding season, regardless of the cow's parity order.

Summary: In this paper, the authors used the distance between the states as a theoretical measure to determine the bipartite entanglement in a one-dimensional magnetic dimer system. The calculation was compared with the concurrence, a well-known entanglement measure, and found to be the same. Experimental verification was done on single crystals of copper acetate, showing the existence of bipartite entanglement even at room temperature. Characterization and calculations revealed the weak intermolecular interactions and low probability of direct Cu-Cu exchange in copper acetate.
