Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of online access to medical records on patient empowerment, informed decision-making, and the patient-provider relationship. The results showed that users were more likely than nonusers to believe that online access to medical records would increase their participation in healthcare, improve their relationship with their general practitioner, and facilitate informed decision-making. Overall, online access to medical records has the potential to empower patients and enhance informed decision-making, but the effects are small.

Summary: Real-world evidence (RWE) plays an increasingly important role in public health and healthcare decisions globally. An Integrated Dataset has been created, combining primary care electronic medical records with pharmacy and medical claims data for over 123 million US patients since 2014. This study describes the components of the Integrated Dataset and evaluates its representativeness to the US population, as well as its potential for evaluating influenza vaccine effectiveness.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to significant changes in healthcare delivery worldwide. This study highlights the importance of population health metrics in predicting and responding to future health crises. By analyzing data from an academic hospital, the study identifies certain variables and engineered features that can serve as early warning signs of health crises, such as changes in respiratory rate, temperature, and oxygen saturation.

Summary: Through analysis of the CPRD database, it was found that the standardized prevalence of gastroparesis in 2016 was 13.8 per 100,000 persons, while the standardized incidence increased from 1.5 per 100,000 person-years in 2004 to 1.9 in 2016. Diabetic gastroparesis and idiopathic gastroparesis were the most common disease etiologies, with diabetic gastroparesis patients having a significantly higher risk of mortality after diagnosis compared to idiopathic gastroparesis patients.

Summary: Informatics researchers and practitioners have started investigating racism related to electronic health records (EHRs). However, there is a lack of inclusion of racism concepts in this work. This perspective offers a classification of racism at three levels and suggests recommendations for future research, practice, and policy. The recommendations include the use of structural measures to address structural racism, intersectionality as a theoretical framework, and actions to increase diversity in the informatics workforce.

Summary: Following the outbreak of COVID-19, several countries have attempted to implement digital vaccine passports (DVPs) to facilitate international travel. These passports, comprised of essential personal data, have the potential to become part of a global electronic health record, raising important issues related to building a global digital health ecosystem. Debate simulations provide a secure and interactive space for participatory policy discussions in advancing digital health diplomacy. This study analyzed the sociotechnical issues associated with the global implementation of DVPs through an online simulation of a Model World Health Assembly, generating valuable insights and questions regarding the role of diplomacy in global digital health. The debate arguments addressed various aspects of DVPs, including technological, scientific, ethical, legal, policy, and societal considerations. Reflecting on the simulation, the study discusses the opportunities and challenges it presents for the digitalization, decolonization, decentralization, and democratization of participatory policymaking.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the absolute risk reduction (ARR) of heart failure events in people treated with sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors. The findings showed that SGLT2 inhibitors were associated with a reduced risk of hospitalization for heart failure, particularly in patients with a history of cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, the effect was much lower in individuals without CVD.

Summary: This study provides a literature review on capability maturity models (MMs) for the implementation and evaluation of digital health (DH) ecosystems. It identifies diverse domain-specific MMs and their development, implementation, and evaluation methods. The study also introduces a new category of community-facing MMs. The conclusion suggests using a metamodel like DHPMAT-MM to unify domain-specific MMs and guide the overall implementation and evaluation of DH ecosystems.

Summary: Anemia is common in chronic kidney disease (CKD) and requires better management. A study involving practitioners and patients found that an audit-based education intervention was welcomed by practitioners. However, prescribing erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs) was seen as a challenge. Collaboration between renal physicians and general practitioners is needed to develop shared care protocols. The study highlights the need for increased awareness of renal anemia and adherence to guideline recommendations.

Summary: This study examined the impact of COVID-19 on mental health-related visits to general practices among children and young people in Australia. Data from January 2014 to September 2021 showed a significant increase in overall mental health-related visits during the COVID-19 period, particularly for depressive disorders. Females and those in socioeconomically disadvantaged areas experienced the greatest increase. The findings highlight the need for targeted resources to improve mental health outcomes and alleviate the burden on the healthcare system.
