Background: A disintegrin and metalloproteinase (ADAMs) have been associated with multiple malignancies. ADAMs are involved in cell fusion, cell migration, membrane protein shedding and proteolysis. ADAM8 has been found to be overexpressed in squamous cell carcinomas of the lung. A new study showed that ADAM8 is significantly overexpressed in metastasis of squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck (HNSCC). Methods: We determined ADAM8 levels in the serum of 79 HNSCC patients at the time of diagnosis, in 35 patients 3 months after treatment and in 10 patients 1 year after therapy and compared the results to the sera of 31 healthy volunteers. We also constructed tissue microarrays to detect ADAM8 immunohistochemically in 100 patients. The results were correlated with the survival data of the patients to determine the diagnostic and prognostic value. Results: The data demonstrated that patients with high ADAM8 expression in the tumor have worse survival rates. We found that high ADAM8 serum levels correlated with high ADAM8 expression in tumor samples. Soluble ADAM8 levels did not show any prognostic or diagnostic properties. Conclusion: In summary ADAM8 expression is a prognostic factor for survival of patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.

Annual trends in Google searches provides insights related to rhinosinusitis exacerbations

David T. Liu, Martin Schally, Sven Schneider, Julia Eckl-Dorna, Katie M. Phillips, Christian A. Mueller, Ahmad R. Sedaghat, Gerold Besser

Summary: The study found that Google searches with rhinosinusitis-specific search terms consistently peaked during the winter around the world over a 15-year period, indicating sustained interest in rhinosinusitis. These findings indirectly support the model of viral infection or exposure as the predominant cause of acute rhinosinusitis and acute exacerbations of chronic rhinosinusitis.

Functional Outcome After Simultaneous Vestibular Schwannoma Resection and Cochlear Implantation With Intraoperative Cochlear Nerve Monitoring

Anselm Joseph Gadenstaetter, Alice Barbara Auinger, Matthias Gerlitz, Dominik Riss, Valerie Dahm, Erdem Yildiz, Karl Roessler, Christian Matula, Christoph Arnoldner

Summary: This study analyzed the functional outcome and implant usage of patients with preserved auditory nerve responses after simultaneous translabyrinthine schwannoma resection and cochlear implantation. The results showed that some patients had positive cochlear nerve responses after tumor removal and successfully underwent cochlear implantation, leading to improved hearing and word recognition. Therefore, intraoperative assessment of cochlear nerve function using electrically evoked auditory brainstem response audiometry can help identify individuals eligible for simultaneous vestibular schwannoma resection and cochlear implantation.

MRI surveillance after translabyrinthine vestibular schwannoma resection and cochlear implantation: is it feasible?

Valerie Dahm, Ursula Schwarz-Nemec, Michael A. Arnoldner, Rudolfs Liepins, Alice B. Auinger, Christian Matula, Christoph Arnoldner

Summary: It is increasingly important and interesting to assess cochlear implantation in patients with vestibular schwannomas. The visibility of the internal auditory canal after vestibular schwannoma resection and cochlear implantation can be determined with magnetic resonance imaging. The study shows that surveillance with a 1.5T MRI device using metal artifact reduction sequences is feasible and safe.

A Novel Preparation Technique for Human Nasal Respiratory Mucosa to Disclose Its Glycosylation Pattern for Bioadhesive Drug Delivery

Julia Clara Gausterer, Michael Schlager, Navid Ahmadi, Michael Nieratschker, Valerie Dahm, Michael Wirth, Christoph Arnoldner, Clemens Honeder, Franz Gabor

Summary: A reliable method of preparing human nasal mucosa samples and a tool for investigating the carbohydrate building blocks of the respiratory epithelium’s glycocalyx are necessary to study glycotargeting as a potential strategy for nasal drug delivery. By using a simple experimental setup in a 96-well plate format and a panel of six fluorescein-labeled lectins with varying carbohydrate specificities, accessible carbohydrates in the mucosa could be detected and quantified. The experimental setup also allowed for the observation of the uptake of carbohydrate-bound lectin into the cells, and provided hints about the influence of mucus renewal on bioadhesive drug delivery.

Hidden hearing loss: current concepts

Munir Demir Bajin, Valerie Dahm, Vincent Y. W. Lin

Summary: The purpose of this review is to summarize the current knowledge on hidden hearing loss (HHL) and its development mechanisms. It is characterized by impairment of afferent synapses of inner hair cells, particularly those with slow spontaneous firing rate. Recent research suggests that HHL may also be related to demyelination of cochlear nerve. Diagnostic tests such as auditory brainstem response, envelope-following response, and middle-ear muscle reflex show promise but still need validation in humans.
