Background: Histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors are a novel anti-tumor therapy. To determine whether HDAC inhibitors may be useful in the treatment of adult acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), we examined the acetylation of histone H4 by immunohistochemistry in newly diagnosed ALL patients and evaluated the impact of acetylation on complete remission (CR) rate, relapse-free survival (RFS), and overall survival (OS). Methods: Patients >= 18 years of age and an available diagnostic bone marrow biopsy were evaluated. Cox proportional hazards analysis was used to identify univariate and multivariate correlates of CR, RFS, and OS. The variables histone H4 acetylation (positive or negative), white blood count, cytogenetic (CG) risk group (CALGB criteria), and age were used in multivariate analysis. Results: On multivariate analysis, histone acetylation was associated with a trend towards an improved OS (for all CG risk groups) (HR = 0.51, p = 0.09). In patients without poor risk CG, there was an impressive association between the presence of histone acetylation and an improved CR rate (OR 3.43, p = 0.035), RFS (HR 0.07, p = 0.005), and OS (HR 0.24, p = 0.007). This association remained statistically significant in multivariate analysis. Conclusions: These data provide a rationale for the design of novel regimens incorporating HDAC inhibitors in ALL.

Qing Lin, Shaocheng Zhang, Li-Juan Yu, Baoxiu Hou, Shuaihua Zhang, Zheng Wang, Jianjun Song, Xiaoxian Zhao

Summary: In this study, a freestanding anode material for rechargeable sodium-ion batteries was designed by encapsulating Fe3O4/FeS2 heterojunction in a carbon membrane. The material exhibited high specific capacity, low cost, and was suitable for large-scale energy storage. It provided a fast electron transfer pathway and alleviated volume expansion during charging/discharging process. The direct contact between the heterojunction and electrolyte shortened the diffusion path of Na+, resulting in improved performance.

Carbonized MXene-polyvinylpyrrolidone as an adsorbent for solid-phase microextraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from tea beverages prior to GC analysis

Yahuan Li, Yang Li, Qingyun Chang, Xiaohuan Zang, Shuaihua Zhang, Chun Wang, Zhi Wang

Summary: MXene-polyvinylpyrrolidone (MXene-PVP) was prepared by physically doping and spray drying to overcome the aggregation issue of MXene. The resulting MXene-PVP was carbonized to create a carbonized MXene-PVP (MXene-PVP-C), which was then immobilized on a stainless steel wire using the sol-gel approach to produce a solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber. This fiber was used to extract polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from tea beverages, and the extracted PAHs were detected using gas chromatography. Central composite design methodology was employed to investigate the main SPME parameters. Under optimized conditions, the method achieved low detection limits (0.03-0.15 μg/L) and quantification limits (0.10-0.50 μg/L) for the PAHs. The method exhibited good recoveries (78.6% to 122%) for the spiked PAHs in tea beverages, with low relative standard deviations (less than 8.2% for single-fiber and 9.6% for fiber-to-fiber).

Jingyu Wu, Xiaoxu Xuan, Shuaihua Zhang, Zhi Li, Haolin Li, Bin Zhao, Haolin Ye, Zhichang Xiao, Xiaoxian Zhao, Xingtao Xu, Xinjuan Liu, Jungmok You, Yusuke Yamauchi

Summary: A simultaneous MOF-on-MOF growth combined with the MOF-etching strategy was developed to tailor MOF/MOF nanorings, which were then transformed into N, P co-doped carbon rings (NPC-Rings) through thermal transformation and phosphidation activation. The hierarchically porous structure of NPC-Rings exhibited high adsorption capacity, fast salt adsorption rate, and superior capacity retention stability. Finite element simulations demonstrated that the unique structure of NPC-Rings significantly promoted current density and charge migration, leading to stronger salt adsorption capacity.
