Summary: Principal component analysis (PCA) is widely used for dimensionality reduction and uncovering latent structure in statistics, machine learning, and genomics. To address the challenges of ever-growing data, this paper proposes a novel algorithm called PCAone, which achieves fast and memory-efficient PCA and outperforms existing methods in comprehensive evaluations using multiple large-scale real-world datasets.

Summary: Computation of correlation coefficient among attributes of ordinary database is important especially in the classification and analysis of data. To achieve a dependable correlation, the construct of partial correlation coefficient based on IFD has been considered. In this study, a novel approach of finding PCCIFSs by incorporating the three parameters of IFD based on a modified CCIFSs approach is proposed, compared to the existing approach.

Summary: Wastewater surveillance is an effective tool for controlling infectious diseases, providing cost-effective and real-time monitoring results. In this study, we developed preanalytical protocols for influenza virus surveillance in wastewater and conducted large-scale monitoring in Hong Kong. The concentration of influenza viruses in wastewater was associated with clinical detection rates and illness rates in the community, and increased significantly after the mask mandate was cancelled.

Summary: Influenza viruses evolve rapidly during infection through mutations or reassortment, potentially leading to strains with increased resistance or infectivity. Understanding how genome segments interact during reassortment can help predict future events and emergence of new pandemic strains. Research in this area could provide valuable insights for risk assessment and pandemic preparedness.

Summary: Our study investigated the virological evolution and resistance mutation against oseltamivir in patients with influenza who underwent combination therapy of favipiravir and oseltamivir. We found that the combination therapy had little effect on virus nucleotide diversity and did not prevent the increase of oseltamivir-resistant variants. The dominant variant type observed was the G→A transition, and mutations conferring reduction in oseltamivir sensitivity were detected, with H275Y being the only mutation present.

Summary: tvBOT is a user-friendly and efficient web application for visualizing, modifying, and annotating phylogenetic trees. It excels in data preparation by eliminating redundant style and syntax data. With a data-driven engine, tvBOT allows annotations with practical data organized in uniform formats, making it easy to add specific layers of annotation dataset. It supports real-time and diversified style adjustments, and can be used on mobile devices. Furthermore, tvBOT offers multiple formats for tree annotations by combining 26 annotation dataset types. It also allows exporting the final drawing state and related data in JSON format for sharing, editing, or using as a style template. tvBOT is available for free at: https://www.chiplot.online/tvbot.html.

Summary: This paper presents a novel all-optical high-throughput method called HELIOS for aligning DNA, RNA, and protein sequences. The HELIOS method utilizes sophisticated operations to locate matches, mutations, and indels within biological sequences, while the optical architecture employs high-speed processing and operational parallelism. Simulation studies confirm that the HELIOS method outperforms both electrical and optical alternatives in terms of processing time and memory requirements.
