Polymorphisms of the FCN2 Gene 3'UTR Region and Their Clinical Associations in Preterm Newborns

Swierzko, Dariusz Jarych, Gabriela Gajek, Karolina Chojnacka, Paulina Kobiela, Maja Kufelnicka-Babout, Mateusz Michalski, Katarzyna Sobczuk, Agnieszka Szala-Pozdziej, Misao Matsushita, Jan Mazela, Iwona Domzalska-Popadiuk, David C. Kilpatrick, Jaroslaw Kalinka, Hideharu Sekine, Maciej Cedzynski

Summary: The study identified FCN2 gene 3'UTR polymorphisms associated with ficolin-2 expression and perinatal complications in preterm neonates, with some polymorphisms showing linkage disequilibrium and influence on serum ficolin-2 concentration. These findings indicate a potential genetic basis for susceptibility to infections and birthweight in preterm neonates.

Components of the Lectin Pathway of Complement in Solid Tumour Cancers

Maciej Cedzynski, Anna S. Swierzko

Summary: The complement system is a crucial branch of the innate immune response that can be activated through three distinct pathways. It plays a role in maintaining/restoring homeostasis, interacting with cellular and acquired immunity components. The cross-talk between the complement system and other enzyme-dependent cascades enhances its defensive capabilities, but excessive or chronic activation may be harmful.

Antibodies Recognizing Yersinia enterocolitica Lipopolysaccharides of Various Chemotypes in Synovial Fluids From Patients With Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis

Katarzyna Kasperkiewicz, Anna S. Swierzko, Mateusz Michalski, Lukasz Eppa, Mikael Skurnik, Zbigniew Zuber, Maciej Cedzynski

Summary: This study found that chemotype-specific antibodies to Yersinia enterocolitica O:3 LPS were present in synovial fluids from patients with arthritis, with high titers of antibodies specifically recognizing the Kdo-lipid A region. Western blot analysis showed antibodies reacting with fast-migrating LPS fractions and enterobacterial common antigen (ECA). Furthermore, in vitro experiments confirmed that Yersinia LPS processing leads to the exposure of its core region and enhanced potency of complement lectin pathway activation.

Summary: The study found that TLR2 and TLR4 gene polymorphisms are associated with children suffering from urinary tract infections (UTI), while urine neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) concentration can reflect the degree of kidney tissue injury in children with urinary tract malformations.
