A unified protocol is essential to ensure that fetal ultrasound measurements taken in multicentre research studies are accurate and reproducible. This paper describes the methodology used to take two-dimensional, ultrasound measurements in the longitudinal, fetal growth component of the INTERGROWTH-21st Project. These standardised methods should minimise the systematic errors associated with pooling data from different study sites. They represent a model for carrying out similar research studies in the future.

Maria Arriaga-Redondo, Ester Sanz-Lopez, Ana Rodriguez-Sanchez de la Blanca, Itziar Marsinyach-Ros, Leticia Lambea-Rueda, Alicia Diaz-Redondo, Manuel Sanchez-Luna

Summary: This study explores parents' opinions on neonatal safety in the hospital and identifies areas for improvement. Results show that the majority of parents felt safe overall. However, parents in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) expressed a desire for more involvement in their child's care and treatment. In the intermediate care unit (IC), parents were not completely satisfied with the information they received and identified the need for improvement in information consistency, consent for procedures, and soliciting opinions on their child's care and treatment.

Yvette N. N. Lowensteyn, Joukje E. E. Willemsen, Natalie I. I. Mazur, Nienke M. M. Scheltema, Nynke C. J. van Haastregt, Amber A. A. ten Buuren, Ichelle van Roessel, Dunja Scheepmaker, Harish Nair, Peter M. M. van de Ven, Louis J. J. Bont

Summary: This study provides the first global case series of children dying with nosocomial RSV infection. Infant-targeted immunization strategies in the future could prevent the majority of nosocomial RSV-related deaths. Although nosocomial RSV deaths are expected to occur at highest rates in low- and lower-middle-income countries (LMICs), the reported number of these deaths was low in these countries. Hospital-based surveillance is needed to capture the full burden of nosocomial RSV mortality in LMICs.

Ana Paula Sayuri Sato, Alexandra Crispim Boing, Rosa Livia Freitas de Almeida, Mariana Otero Xavier, Rafael da Silveira Moreira, Edson Zangiacomi Martinez, Alicia Matijasevich, Maria Rita Donalisio

Summary: This study analyzed vaccine coverage, its homogeneity, and measles cases in Brazil from 2011 to 2021, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings showed a progressive decline in vaccine coverage and homogeneity after 2015, with a more significant impact after 2020, especially in the North and Northeast regions. Lower vaccine coverage clusters were associated with worse human development indicators, social inequality, and limited access to healthcare services. The pandemic exacerbated health inequalities, highlighting the importance of strengthening primary care, improving health communication, and ensuring vaccine access to reduce missed opportunities and vaccine hesitancy.

Maria Rita Donalisio, Alexandra Crispim Boing, Ana Paula Sayuri Sato, Edson Zangiacomi Martinez, Mariana Otero Xavier, Rosa Livia Freitas de Almeida, Rafael da Silveira Moreira, Rejane Christine de Sousa Queiroz, Alicia Matijasevich

Summary: The drop in childhood vaccination coverage, including poliomyelitis, is a major health concern. This study analyzed the temporal trend of polio vaccine coverage in the first year of life from 2011 to 2021 and mapped vaccination coverage in Brazil, including the COVID-19 pandemic period. The findings revealed a reduction in vaccination coverage in all regions, especially in the North and Northeast regions and during the COVID-19 pandemic. The drop in coverage was more pronounced in socially vulnerable states and health regions after 2019, indicating a risk of wild virus reintroduction.

Summary: This study aims to determine whether the use of lung ultrasound score (LUS) as a decision tool for surfactant replacement therapy (SRT) in preterm infants with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) can reduce the incidence of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) or death. A total of 668 spontaneously-breathing preterm infants, born at 25+0 to 29+6 weeks' gestation, will be randomized into a control group and a study group. The control group will receive SRT only when the fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO2) exceeds 0.3, while the study group will receive SRT if the LUS score is higher than 8 or the FiO2 requirements exceed 0.3. The primary outcome will be the difference in proportion of infants with BPD or death between the study and control groups.
