Summary: This study found an association between the ERICH3 rs11580409 genetic polymorphism and treatment response following long-term antidepressant medication. The rs11580409 polymorphism may serve as a useful biomarker for treatment response in major depressive disorder.

Summary: In this study, adjunctive antidepressant treatment was not associated with lower depressive symptoms or higher mania symptoms in outpatients with bipolar disorder. There were no differences in treatment effects on mania scales, and potential biases due to nonrandomized design complicated causal interpretations, with no evidence suggesting better treatment effects of adjunctive antidepressants.

Summary: This study reviewed the association between the SLC6A4 5-HTTLPR polymorphism and treatment emergent mania (TEM) in bipolar disorder, and discussed the benefits of developing risk stratification models for guiding the use of antidepressant treatment in bipolar depression. The study found a significant association between the s allele of the 5-HTTLPR polymorphism and TEM. Further genome-wide research is needed to identify other genetic variations that may contribute to TEM.

Summary: In this study, altered brain connectivity related to antidepressant-induced mania was observed in panic disorder patients. The patient who developed mania showed decreased connectivity in default mode and frontoparietal networks, and increased connectivity in visual processing network. These findings provide insight into the neurological basis of antidepressant-induced mania.

Summary: Common genetic variants in calcium channel genes are important markers of genetic susceptibility for bipolar disorder (BD). Previous clinical trials have shown that Calcium Channel Blocker (CCB) medication can improve mood stability in some BD patients. In this pilot study, 50 BD patients (39 from China and 11 from the US) hospitalized for manic episodes were given add-on CCB treatment. The study found that certain intronic variants of the Calcium Voltage-Gated Channel Subunit Alpha1 B (CACNA1B) were associated with treatment outcomes for manic patients, suggesting that these variants could be predictors for response to add-on CCB treatment for bipolar mania patients.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the association between thyroid autoimmunity and treatment-emergent mania (ATEM) in pediatric mood disorders. The findings showed that the seroprevalence and titer of anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPO-abs) were significantly higher in patients with ATEM compared to controls. Logistic regression analysis revealed a significant association between TPO-abs seroprevalence and ATEM even after adjusting for various factors. These findings suggest that TPO-abs could potentially serve as a biomarker for assessing the risk of ATEM in children and adolescents.

Summary: The objective of this study was to evaluate differences in sustained attention and associated neurofunctional profiles between bipolar disorder type I, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and healthy comparison youth. Adolescent participants underwent MRI while completing a modified Continuous Performance Task. BD participants displayed deficits in sustained attention and lower activation in brain regions associated with performance and neural integration. These differences were distinct to the BD group and not attributable to ADHD comorbidity.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of lithium and folic acid on behavioral changes and oxidative stress parameters in an animal model of mania induced by ouabain. The results showed that ouabain induced mania-like behavior and oxidative stress in rats' brains, but lithium could reverse these alterations. Folic acid did not affect behavior parameters but had an antioxidant effect on the evaluated brain structures.

Summary: The PHQ-9 has been widely validated and recommended for depression screening in primary care settings in a two-stage process. However, limitations such as the lack of longitudinal studies, small sample sizes, and heterogeneity in primary care environments restrict the generalizability of these results. Longitudinal studies are needed to provide evidence of the long-term effectiveness of screening.

Summary: Research indicates that the comorbidity rates of bipolar disorder (BD) and eating disorders (ED) vary across different diagnostic groups, rather than being determined by the direction between BD and ED. Future studies should focus on the risk, timeline, clinical impact, and management of comorbid BD and ED across different age groups.

Summary: The efficacy of polypharmacy compared to monotherapy in maintenance treatment of bipolar illness is not well established, but the best drug combination identified in the literature review is lithium + valproic acid for preventing manic episodes.
