Summary: Recent advances in micro-CT technology have enabled studying multiphase flow in natural porous media at the pore scale. Experimental results in oil-wet carbonates showed that tertiary CWI and in situ CO2 exsolution can reduce remaining oil saturation left after water flooding. Furthermore, in situ contact angle measurements provided direct evidence of wettability reversal towards reduced oil wetness due to CWI.

Summary: In recent years, efforts have been made to develop environmentally friendly fuels to combat the negative effects of fossil fuels on the ecosystem. Alternative biodiesel transport fuels (ABTF) have shown promising potential due to their non-toxicity and biodegradability. This paper utilizes neural network-based approaches to predict the performance of ABTF based on input features such as reaction duration, catalyst amount, and methanol/oil ratio. After tuning and evaluating different neural network models, the boosted multilayer perceptron is identified as the most accurate model with an optimal output value of 98.99 when the input vector is (x1 = 158, x2 = 1.25, x3 = 33.75).

Summary: This article reviews the techniques of conventional and in situ biodiesel synthesis from microalgae, with a focus on ultrasound-assisted biodiesel production. The study found that biodiesel production through ultrasonication assisted in situ processing of wet microalgae is at least three times more expensive than biodiesel production through conventional mechanisms from feedstocks such as waste cooking oil. The feasibility of ultrasound-intensified biodiesel production from microalgae is discussed.

Summary: The study found that all samples of the emulsified fuels produced micro-explosions in four distinct stages. Larger water particles size and higher hydrophilic-lipophilic balance values are the main factors that caused shorter time leading to micro-explosion of droplets.

Summary: This study examined the beneficial effects of foliar application of micro-algal (Chlorella vulgaris and Spirulina platensis) and medicinal plant leaves (Salix alba, Psidium guajava, and Olea europaea) extracts on Phaseolus vulgaris (Bean) under salinity stress. Results showed that S. platensis extract had the greatest improvement on shoot length and fresh weight of shoot. Application of the bio-stimulant extracts significantly increased chlorophyll content and strengthened photosynthetic pigment, soluble sugars, and soluble protein levels. Proline and antioxidant enzyme levels were reduced with algal and plant extracts treatment. These findings highlight the potential of these extracts in mitigating salinity stress.

Summary: The study demonstrates that using Schizochytrium microalgae bio-oil as biofuel for diesel engines shows improved performance in terms of fuel efficiency and reduced harmful gas emissions, except for NOX which is slightly higher than diesel. Overall, the differences between them are negligible.

Summary: A low salinity surfactant (LSS) system was developed to enhance the performance of immiscible surfactant alternating gas/CO2 (SAG) flooding in sandstone reservoir cores. LSS solutions showed positive impacts on various mechanisms responsible for enhanced oil recovery (EOR), including reducing surface and interfacial tension, altering wettability, improving CO2-foam stability, and decreasing surfactant adsorption.

Summary: This study investigates the potential of algal biodiesel production in a reactive distillation unit. The performance of the unit is improved through process intensification and optimization using a multi-objective optimization strategy. A thermally coupled reactive distillation column is suggested to further enhance the environmental sustainability and energy utilization. The results show that the biodiesel production unit achieves high purity biodiesel with reduced CO2 emissions and cost savings. The proposed process demonstrates a net energy ratio of 1.79, net energy value of 18.2, and net renewable energy value of 41.4 MJ/kg.

Summary: This study assessed the potential of using secondary treated wastewater for the production of algal biofuel. The presence of NH4-N along with NO3-N had an adverse effect on biomass growth and FAME production. The impact of NH4-N was pH-dependent. Phosphorus concentration did not significantly affect growth and yield.

Summary: Biodiesel is a green, renewable alternative to petroleum-derived diesel, but using vegetable oil for production poses challenges to food security. Advances in metabolic engineering and lipid biosynthesis have enabled the engineering of plant vegetative tissues for lipid production. Strategies for increasing lipid accumulation and maintaining ideal fatty acid profiles for biodiesel production are essential in utilizing these alternative sources.

Summary: This study investigated the growth response of red algae to seawater nutrient concentrations, salinity, temperature, and light. Results showed that nitrogen availability and salinity are likely to restrict the summertime growth of the algae. When combined with modeling, the research may aid in predicting growth responses to nutrient loading in estuaries.
