The European Union Water Framework Directive (2013/39/EU) sets very restrictive environmental quality standards for 45 priority substances and other pollutants, including organotin compounds (OTCs). Therefore, it is necessary to develop analytical methods in compliance with the environmental quality standard (EQSs) proposed to protect the aquatic environment and humans. The proposed method (HS-SPME-GC-QqQ-MS/MS) allows the determination of OTCs, i.e. monobutyltin (MBT), dibutyltin (DBT) and TBT in water in the range of few ngL(-1). The method is nearly full automated, sensitive and simple; it involves less reagents, reduces waste, and is less-time consuming than traditional methods for OTCs. As such, the procedure connects with the principles of green analytical chemistry. Additionally, good precision (RSD < 20%), a very low method quantification limit (MQL) (0.76 ng L-1 for TBT by using only 10 mL of sample) and excellent linearity (range MQL-20 ng L-1) are achieved. Under these conditions, the very restrictive limits for the environmental quality standards (EQS) fixed by the 2013/39/EU Directive are achieved. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Oral bioavailability reveals an overestimation of the toxicity of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in atmospheric particulate matter

Joel Sanchez-Pinero, Paula Gomez-Meijide, Estefania Concha-Grana, Jorge Moreda-Pineiro, Soledad Muniategui-Lorenzo, Purificacion Lopez-Mahia

Summary: This study measured the oral bioavailability of PAHs in PM10 using a simulated digestive system test, and found that the bioavailability was below 5%, with fluorene, anthracene, acenaphthene, and phenanthrene being the most bioavailable PAHs. Health risk assessment showed no carcinogenic risk from orally bioavailable PM10-bound PAHs.

A reliable method for the isolation and characterization of microplastics in fish gastrointestinal tracts using an infrared tunable quantum cascade laser system

Adrian Lopez-Rosales, Jose Andrade, Veronica Fernandez-Gonzalez, Purificacion Lopez-Mahia, Soledad Muniategui-Lorenzo

Summary: The frequent reports of microplastics in fish stomachs have raised societal and environmental concerns as they can accumulate along the food chain. The analysis of microplastics in fish requires addressing two main challenges: sample treatment and final characterization. This study proposes a novel method using a quantum cascade laser-based device for faster characterization, but it also faces challenges in sample processing and particle handling.

Adsorption of pesticides and personal care products on pristine and weathered microplastics in the marine environment. Comparison between bio-based and conventional plastics

Estefania Concha-Grana, Carmen Ma Moscoso-Perez, Purificacion Lopez-Mahia, Soledad Muniategui-Lorenzo

Summary: The hydrophobicity of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) allows them to adsorb onto microplastics in the marine environment, affecting their distribution and transfer in the food chain. This study investigated the adsorption of two pesticides and six musk fragrances on polyamide and polyhydroxybutyrate in seawater, considering the influence of water temperature and plastic weathering. The results showed that PHB had higher adsorption capacity for the pollutants compared to PA, and PA was more affected by temperature and plastic weathering.

Organotin compounds in seafood by ultrasonic assisted extraction and gas chromatography-triple quadrupole tandem mass spectrometry

Carmen Maria Moscoso-Perez, Veronica Fernandez-Gonzalez, Jorge Moreda-Pineiro, Purificacion Lopez Mahia, Soledad Muniategui-Lorenzo

Summary: Although the European Parliament has set limits for the environmental quality of organotin compounds (OTs) in Directive 2013/39/EU, the marine environment continues to be affected due to global maritime circulation. OTs accumulate in fish and seafood, making them the main source of OTs in human consumption. A robust and fast method for quantifying OTs in fish and seafood, using ultrasound-assisted extraction and gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, has been validated and applied.

Carlos Ramos-Contreras, Maria Pineiro-Iglesias, Estefania Concha-Grana, Joel Sanchez-Pinero, Jorge Moreda-Pineiro, Amaya Franco-Uria, Purificacion Lopez-Mahia, Francisco Molina-Perez, Soledad Muniategui-Lorenzo

Summary: This study examines the spatio-temporal variations of PM10 mass concentrations and associated pollutants in Medellin and Itagui, Colombia. The study provides valuable data on the chemical characterization of PM10, including metal(oid)s concentrations and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) concentrations. Multivariate surface self-assembly strategy to fabricate ionic covalent organic framework surface grafting monolithic sorbent for enrichment of aristolochic acids prior to high performance liquid chromatography analysis

Jian Sun, Zheheng Zheng, Zixiao Jia, Jiabin Wang, Xucong Lin

Summary: In this study, an ionic covalent organic framework (iCOF) surface grafting monolithic sorbent was prepared for in-tube solid-phase microextraction (SPME) of aristolochic acids (AAs) in various samples. The density of quaternary ammonium ions in the iCOF was modulated for enhanced adsorption of AAs. The iCOF surface grafting monolithic sorbent was confirmed by different means. Several operating conditions were optimized to develop the online in-tube SPME-HPLC method, which showed good linearity, low limits of detection, and high recoveries for AAs in serum samples. This study presents a feasible approach for the application of COF-based monolithic sorbents in sample preparation.
