The development of a seed metering device to mechanise the seed-sowing process for sandalwood is reported. Amongst the mass flow and precision type seed meters considered, the 'vacuum disc' type precision meter was deemed most suitable. A vSets vacuum disc seed meter was modified to accommodate seeds whose diameter ranged from 13.5 to 23.5 mm. Nine custom made discs were tested over three vacuum levels. The discs were analysed for their ability to achieve a seed spacing of 200 mm at a ground speed of 4 km h(-1). Accuracy was measured using the performance indices from ISO 7256/1-1984(E) as well as a modified coefficient of precision (CP3) index. Tests of twenty seven unique configurations were conducted with a sample of three hundred seeds. It was found that more than half of the configurations could singulate the seeds to a singulation level of 94%. Discs with seven 10 mm or 12 mm diameter holes, run at 17 kPa were found to be the most accurate configurations for the conditions considered and demonstrate that mechanisation of sandalwood seed sowing is possible. Summary: This paper investigates the energy absorbed by a Roll-Over Protective Structure (ROPS) cab during controlled lateral rollover testing on a modern narrow-track tractor. Tests with different wheel configurations show that narrow tires consistently subject the ROPS cab frame to more energy compared to wide tires. Further understanding of the influence of tire configurations and silent-blocks' dynamic performance on energy partitioning is warranted.

Using VR to teach safety in design: what and how do engineering students learn?

Melissa Marinelli, Sally A. Male, Andrew Valentine, Andrew Guzzomi, Tom van der Veen, Ghulam Mubashar Hassan

Summary: Access to interactive, simulated work environments through virtual reality (VR) has the potential to teach safety in design (SiD) to engineering students in a cost-effective and convenient manner. This study examined the use of VR simulation in engineering design units at an Australian university to enhance students' understanding of SiD. The findings suggest that VR simulation is an effective learning tool, but the combination of different learning elements is crucial for achieving desired learning outcomes.

Accuracy of Selection in Early Generations of Field Pea Breeding Increases by Exploiting the Information Contained in Correlated Traits

Summary: The accuracy of predicted breeding values (PBV) for low heritability traits can be increased by utilizing information from correlated traits. A study compared the accuracy of PBV for 10 correlated traits in a genetically diverse field pea population using univariate or multivariate linear mixed model (MLMM) analysis. The MLMM approach improved the accuracy of PBV and showed potential for increasing genetic gains in early generation selection cycles.

Summary: This study evaluates the stability of temporary road signs through simulations and experimental trials and proposes design modifications to address the current instability issue. The simulations show that the temporary road signs are prone to falling over under strong wind. Through the modified design, the signs remain stable at a distance of 1.2 meters from the edge line.

A chronology of subterranean clover burr detachment mechanics and implications for seed harvestability

W. M. Moss, P. G. H. Nichols, M. H. Ryan, K. J. Foster, A. L. Guzzomi

Summary: This study evaluated seed retention of subterranean clover across different subspecies and found that peduncle tensile strength was greater than burr-to-peduncle attachment strength. As the plants senesced, both strength measurements decreased significantly, related to reductions in burr moisture content, and burr and peduncle diameters. These findings are important for commercial production and suggest the potential for harvesting seed before plant senescence with appropriate machinery, although further evaluation is needed for implications on seed viability and yield.

Summary: This study found that engineering educators can effectively utilize HMD VR simulations to teach students about safety in design. It was demonstrated that engineering students are able to identify safety hazards in HMD VR simulations whether they are operating the equipment or observing another student in their group. The findings suggest that one HMD VR set per student group is sufficient, making inclusive use of HMD VR simulations feasible even for students who are unwilling or unable to wear the headset.

Harvesting subterranean clover seed - current practices, technology and issues

Wesley M. Moss, Andrew L. Guzzomi, Kevin J. Foster, Megan H. Ryan, Phillip G. H. Nichols

Summary: Subterranean clover seed production industry in Australia is facing challenges due to ageing harvest equipment and environmental impacts. Issues include soil erosion and degradation, expensive and labor-intensive harvesting process, and poor reliability and maintainability of harvester machines. The suction harvest technology utilized by the popular Horwood Bagshaw Clover Harvester is identified as the root cause, prompting the need for new approaches in harvesting subterranean clover seeds.
