A strategy to improve the operation of working anaerobic digesters treating the organic fraction of municipal solid wastes (OFMSW) to increase the biogas production is studied. It consists of increasing the organic loading rate of the digesters by adding extra organic matter from some problematic organic wastes. Vegetable oil (VO), animal fats (AF), cellulose and protein (protein) were used as pure co-substrates and the co-digestion anaerobic process was analysed in terms of the ultimate methane production, the methane production rate and the hydraulic residence time. The analysis of methane or biogas production led to different conclusions when expressing this parameter on a volatile solids basis or on a reactor volume basis. The need for a combined analysis is highlighted. In addition a new model to predict the biodegradability rate and evaluating the organic matter fraction susceptible to biodegradation was developed and proved to be suitable for assessing anaerobic digestion processes. All four co-substrates used led to some operative improvements. Vegetable oil is the most suitable co-substrate to be anaerobically digested with the OFMSW since all the parameters evaluated were greatly improved compared to the OFMSW digestion. (C) 2011 IAgrE. Brewer's spent grain biotransformation to produce lignocellulolytic enzymes and polyhydroxyalkanoates in a two-stage valorization scheme

Jordi Llimos, Oscar Martinez-Avila, Elisabet Marti, Carlos Corchado-Lopo, Laia Llenas, Teresa Gea, Sergio Ponsa

Summary: This study demonstrates a two-stage approach for using lignocellulolytic enzymes produced from low-cost sources to hydrolyze brewer's spent grain and obtain sugar-rich hydrolysates as feedstock for polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) production. The highest xylanase activities were observed from Aspergillus niger and Thermoascus aurantiacus strains, while A. niger extracts showed the most effective sugar release from brewer's spent grain. The sugar-rich hydrolysate obtained with A. niger served as a carbon source for PHA production by using Cupriavidus necator strain, resulting in maximum PHA yield after 48 hours.

Bacillus thuringiensis Production Through Solid-State Fermentation Using Organic Fraction of Municipal Solid Waste (OFMSW) Enzymatic Hydrolysate

Esther Molina-Penate, Nil Arenos, Antoni Sanchez, Adriana Artola

Summary: This paper explores an alternative method for utilizing the organic fraction of waste by enzymatic hydrolysis to obtain sugar-rich fraction for liquid fermentation and partially hydrolyzed solid for solid-state fermentation. The pH of the solid substrate was modified using alkaline cosubstrates, and the growth and sporulation of Bacillus thuringiensis were achieved. This valorization pathway aligns with the concept of urban biorefineries.

Incorporation of Substrates and Inoculums as Operational Strategies to Promote Lignocellulose Degradation in Composting of Green Waste-A Pilot-Scale Study

Edgar Ricardo Oviedo-Ocana, Jonathan Soto-Paz, Viviana Sanchez-Torres, Antoni Sanchez

Summary: This study investigated the impact of incorporating processed food waste, unprocessed food waste, sawdust, phosphate rock, and a specific bacterial inoculum on the composting process and product quality of green waste. The addition of food waste, sawdust, phosphate rock, and the inoculum increased the degradation of lignocellulose, reducing processing time. The effect of the inoculum was compared between laboratory-scale reactors and pilot-scale piles.

Magnetite-based nanoparticles and nanocomposites for recovery of overloaded anaerobic digesters

Raquel Barrena, Maria del Carmen Vargas-Garcia, Paula Catacora-Padilla, Teresa Gea, Ahmad Abo Markeb, Javier Moral-Vico, Antoni Sanchez, Xavier Font, Thomas J. Aspray

Summary: The effect of magnetite nanoparticles and nanocomposites on overloaded anaerobic reactors was evaluated. Both nanomaterials were able to recover methane production within 40 days in granular sludge systems. Magnetite nanoparticles at various doses also recovered the process in flocculent sludge systems between 30 and 50 days. The presence of nanomaterials reversed the inhibition caused by volatile fatty acids and promoted the growth of certain microorganisms.

Summary: The increasing pressure on water resources due to population growth and high water consumption has led to water stress, especially in urban areas from tropical developing countries. The Total Water Footprint (WFtotal) and the Environmental Sustainability Index (SIblue) are holistic water management tools that help identify pressures over water resources. This study assessed the WFtotal and its components in low-income households in Colombia, identifying the activities with high environmental impact and the water quality in the receiving wetland. The results showed a high WFgreen and the scarcity scenarios regarding water quality and sedimentation in the Baquero wetland according to the SIblue.

Adsorptive removal of siloxanes from biogas: recent advances in catalyst reusability and water content effect

Seyed Alireza Vali, Javier Moral-Vico, Xavier Font, Antoni Sanchez

Summary: This review discusses a key issue in the purification of biogas, which is the removal of siloxane. The sensitivity of adsorbents to water and their regeneration ability are analyzed in depth, along with factors such as textural properties, surface functional groups, and hydrophobicity. Traditional adsorbents such as activated carbon, silica gel, and aluminosilicates, as well as emerging adsorbents like metal organic frameworks, graphene oxides, and waste-derived materials, are studied in terms of reusability and water tolerance. Metal organic frameworks show high selectivity, adsorption capacity, and efficient regeneration, making them advantageous in this field.

The Footprint of tourism: a review of Water, Carbon, and Ecological Footprint applications to the tourism sector

Cristina Casals Miralles, Debora Barioni, Maria Serena Mancini, Joan Colon Jord, Merce Boy Roura, Sergio Ponsa Salas, Laia Llenas Argelaguet, Alessandro Galli

Summary: Tourism puts pressure on the environment and is vulnerable to global warming. Research on tourism impacts has increased, but there is a lack of specific guidelines and data, making it difficult to obtain reliable results. This paper discusses the use of Footprint family indicators in tourism and highlights the lack of consensus and specific data in current research. Food production and transportation are identified as the main drivers of environmental burdens in tourism. The Footprint indicators help understand the trade-offs between environmental effects and can be used to prioritize sustainability efforts. The study also analyzes the influence of services provided to different rated tourism experiences and compares the pressure exerted by visitors and the local population.
